They have started to breed, I bought males and females, not thinking that my tank , would be a perfect breeding ground, I honestly didn’t think they would breed, I know, I’m silly..what the heck am I going to do with all these baby fish..?

I never knew that they give birth to live fry..I should have done so much more research..

Can you ask her how she cleans her gravel please, Rita..plus does she clean the filter using the Aquarian water, that’s what I’ve been doing..there is so much muck at the bottom of tank, how does she get rid of all that muck please?
Ritajanice i have an idea . let the babies grow a bit
then sell them cheap to some friends or to a pet store . It might put some potatoes and meat
on the table .

I didn’t long with my grand daughter….she is autistic , so I asked how to clean the stones and
She conveyed the following..
’ So you put them loose in a container, like a few handfuls at a time, and let water run until they sink. Then you basically just swish them with your hands under running water until the water goes clear. You repeat this until you done the stones.
Afterwards you should soak them in Water that has had water conditioner in , the water should be hot, but not boiling.

Not sure that helps Rita xx

We had an aquarium in our first townhouse. It was the only pets the Association bylaws allowed us have. We had a blue Betta and three fish called "iridescent sharks" because they looked like Jaws (one our youngest son's favorite movies) with glittery stripes. Very pretty. Unfortunately, trying to keep the pH in the tank balanced turned out to be an insurmountable task. The fish ended up in a watery grave, and the tank and stand ended up out front with a "free to a good home" sign.
Yes, as much joy as fish tanks bring, they are like puppies and children needing constant attention.......but there is a consolation, and over abundance of fry allows the burgers to keep the party going. :Broadly:

I guess your granddaughter was talking about cleaning the gravel. Maybe she has a smaller aquarium.

Because with most aquariums, you just buy one of those plastic siphon tubes and clean the gravel that way. They are reasonable and found at aquarium stores.

@Ritajanice Also, be careful of those tiny snails that come in to your tank on plants. They breed like crazy after awhile and will not be pleasant to view, getting on everything. Wash any snail eggs off of the plants before putting in your tank.

Yes, I think Rita asked how to clean the stones. Not sure whether my grand daughter’s tank is classed as a small one or not, looks quite big to me. She may have one of the siphon tubes, but perhaps she cleans the stones properly every so often. She is very protective of her fish x

@Ritajanice Are you asking about cleaning the gravel or cleaning the rocks?

Use a siphon tube for the gravel. If your big rocks get any algae on them, you can buy a sucker mouth fish like a Plecostomous to clean the rocks.

Plecostomous will also eat any snail eggs that might have inadvertently been admitted to your tank.

I had a Plecostomous that lived for ten or more years. Besides him eating the algae, I gave him the Pleco wafers. The variety I had grew to about a foot long. He was two inches when I bought him.

@Ritajanice Did you find out how many gallons your aquarium is? Then you can know how many fish to keep and what size fish to get. Some fish species can get very big.

When I was a teen, I had a ten gallon tank. But I got the 40 gallon tank in 1975, just dismantled it a few years ago in case I move.

Bigger tanks are easier to keep clean. And you can have more fish, of course.

Some waste matter deep in the gravel is beneficial. It creates a biological filtration. So you mainly want to siphon up the debris and waste that might be in the upper level of the gravel.

What a great idea, never thought to do this,I will take a few handfuls out at a time, but as Debp said some of what’s under the gravel is beneficial, I never knew that either, any more problems, I know where to come, thank you Rita’s granddaughter , much appreciated.x

Get some Oscars and angelfish to put in the tank....they will eat the guppies. No more problems from guppy breeding. Pinch of food every once in a while....all is good.
My wife still relates with glee the story of how her Oscars ate her brother's Siamese Fighting Fish. Those Oscars must be bad hombres.

They are just big and somewhat aggressive for fish.

Big fish eat smaller fish. It's just the way the ocean fish or tropical fish operate.

I feel sorry for her brother's Betta.

Oscars get really big. Whereas Siamese Fighting Fish (Betta) are only about three or four inches long.
@Ritajanice

You can see how big Oscars are in this brief video. But I prefer Siamese Fighting Fish...so gorgeous.

Finally, something that likes to eat Tilapia. (Not my favorite fish dish. But it's cheap.)

Dont let em get away from you or you'll be sorry. My friend had guppes before and he just kept getting more fish bowls for them and they took over his house there were so many!

Maybe you can get a pet store to buy some from you?

When I got Guppies, I had a couple of large Angel Fish. As soon as the fry were born, the Angel Fish ate some of them. But I still got a proliferation of Guppies! Always was running them back to the aquarium store.

I had a few red Swordtails. They also give birth live but they don't breed too much. Platys and Mollies are also live bearers but I prefer Swordtails.

@Ritajanice fyi ...Most freshwater fish are egg layers but they don't usually breed in your aquarium.

Swordtail: They also come in green and orange colors.
Brief video.

I agree. It's best to just keep some male Guppies and get rid of the females which are plainer anyhow.

Once the Guppies keep in-breeding, then deformities will start to appear.

Btw, I wouldn't recommend keeping Angel Fish with Neons or Cardinal Tetras. When the Angels get large enough, they will try to eat the Neons or Cardinals. I found that out by experience....my Angels got very large as I had a 40 gallon tank.

Neons and Cardinals are like neon lights, red and blue, very pretty. They are schooling fish...you should get about six of them at least so they can school.
