A point that stood out to me from Sunday's sermon this week.

- Are you being pruned?
- What good fruit are you producing?
- Why are you being pruned?
- What does being pruned look like from a practical view?
- What gets pruned (cut away) and what is left?

John 15:1-2 NIV
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,
while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a]
so that it will be even more fruitful.

I've never visited a vineyard, but I have been to several apple orchards.

Interesting to compare an orchard tree to a wild apple tree.
The orchard trees are pruned back mercilessly.
By harvest time they are heavy with fruit.

A wild apple tree, on the other hand, is full branched a loaded with tiny useless fruit.

My wife and visited an apple orchard this Autumn.
We encountered a worker while trying to find the walking path into the orchard.

He jokingly poked around on my jacket to see if I had plenty of pockets.
Then he encouraged us to take as many apples with us as we could carry on our person.
He said he had more apples than he knew what to do with. - LOL

Imagine if someone said that about your spiritual life.

John 10:10 NIV
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy;
I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit

You forgot to mention some entire branches get cut off if they don't bare fruit.
This is loss of salvation for those branches getting cut off.

Once this happens, they must confess and forsake their sin to be in right standing with the Lord once again.
Did they not address this part of what Jesus taught?

Most preachers skip over this part because they don't want to discuss the fact that Jesus did not teaching OSAS which is of course what cherry pickers do is not talk about portions of God's Word that doesn't agree with their pet doctrine of OSAS

Jesus is the Author and Finisher of our faith. Hebrews 12:2 "looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith."

When we repent of our sin nature that causes us to want to sin, and want to be cleansed, Jesus first takes away the sins unto death called lawlessness and makes us clean. The best teaching in John 15 is to include verses 3 and 4. Verse 3 confirms what Jesus did first to bring us to ever lasting life. It says, "you are clean." It is because of 1 John 3:4-5. "Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. 5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin."

The key to staying cleansed of all sin, both lawlessness and immature fruit we need to abide in Jesus (John 15:4 "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me," and 1 John 3:24 "Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.").

I have found that reading a good chunk of God's word every day slowly and in context, absorbing this living part of God, is how Jesus can also abide in us.

People have been misinterpreting this verse for a very long time now.

Branches that are bearing fruit are pruned to bear more fruit.

Branches that are not bearing fruit as it says in the KJV are taken away. but does it mean what most have come to understand it being pulled off the vine?

John 15

King James Version

15 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

There is no question about the branches bearing fruit.

There is also no question about the branches that are not attached to the vine.

I wish to propose to you a more biblically and culturally correct understanding of the branches which are attached to the vine but are not bearing fruit.

1. In Jewish culture of Jesus' day there were man vineyards. However they did nt resemble modern vineyards in that there were no grape arbors or poles and strings where grapevines could grow up on. Grapes , like other vine plants (squash, cucumbers et al.) all grew on the ground.

2. the grape vines would get dirty and their pores where the grape clusters would spring from would often get clogged with soil, being on the ground, and thus not be able to sprout the grapes expected.

3. so what does it mean when the vintner would "take away" the branches not bearing fruit?
Jhn 15:2
Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

4. taketh away is the Greek Word "airro" and means:

airō (Key)
Pronunciation
ah'-ee-ro

KJV Translation Count — Total: 102x
The KJV translates Strong's G142 in the following manner: take up (32x), take away (25x), take (25x), away with (5x), lift up (4x), bear (3x),
  1. to raise up, elevate, lift up
    1. to raise from the ground, take up: stones
    2. to raise upwards, elevate, lift up: the hand
    3. to draw up: a fish
  2. to take upon one's self and carry what has been raised up, to bear

It does not mean remove but to lift up! or take away from one place to another! We get our word aero from this Greek word.

5. Vintners would take the branches not bearing fruit, and lift them up! they would place stones under the pores where the fruit would come, brush them off so they could bear fruit. It is the opposite of removing them from the vine. It actually keeps them on the vine and give them help to bear fruit! Just like Jesus does to the weaker brother and sisters who struggle to bear fruit. He lifts them up so they may bear fruit.

You left off the last 2 verses which provide the solution of that paragraph:
John 15:7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. 8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
This paragraph to me is regarding prayer, Jesus had said His Father's house was a house of prayer. So wouldn't fruit be answered prayer? What then is the key? IF you are abiding then you are doing this? "my words abide in you" then praying and asking what you will, will be done unto you.

So this paragraph to me has to do with prayer and what it takes to have answered prayer. So fruit = answered prayer?

No it is all about being a branch connected to the vine which is Jesus. One of the results of abiding is we will prayer proper prayers that God will answer.

--- ADDENDUM ---

- What does it mean in vs 2 that...
"He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit..." ???
Or worse...

John 15:6 NIV
If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers;
such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.

COMPARE

1 Corinthians 3:12-15 NIV
If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw,
13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light.
It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.
14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.
15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved
even though only as one escaping through the flames.

Are those prunes? Or don't you give a fig about this topic? - LOL

[
Isn't the purpose of "prune-ing" to get the nasty, stinky stuff out?

Used to have a couple of peach trees in the back yard. Over the years, I got only one good crop of 31 peaches; that was the year the typical NC April freeze didn't happen. I kept pruning back dead branches until there was nothing left. Now I have a redbud and a bird-feeder in those spots. And a patio peach on the deck that puts out pretty flowers and red leaves but never fruits.

I really don't like these agricultural metaphors and parables.

Interesting that the fruit bearing branches get pruned.
No good deed goes unpunished?
Seems that growing believers aren't prepared for that painful setback.

Is that even a sound horticultural practice? My experience with roses is that pruning doesn't make the cane bloom better.

I'm not sure sure.
But I suppose it makes sense for the vine-dresser to identify fruit bearing branches and those that don't bear fruit.
Those that don't bear fruit can be removed. (and set aside to be burned - yikes!)
Those branches that do bear fruit would be pruned to maximize their fruit-bearing potential at harvest.
