U.S. Secretary of State James Baker’s famous “not one inch eastward” assurance about NATO expansion in his meeting with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev on February 9, 1990, was part of a cascade of assurances about Soviet security given by Western leaders to Gorbachev and other Soviet officials throughout the process of German unification in 1990 and on into 1991, according to declassified U.S., Soviet, German, British and French documents posted today by the National Security Archive at George Washington University (http://nsarchive.gwu.edu).

The documents show that multiple national leaders were considering and rejecting Central and Eastern European membership in NATO as of early 1990 and through 1991, that discussions of NATO in the context of German unification negotiations in 1990 were not at all narrowly limited to the status of East German territory, and that subsequent Soviet and Russian complaints about being misled about NATO expansion were founded in written contemporaneous memcons and telcons at the highest levels.

I heard this and thought that it looks like Biden actually WANTS a big war....I hesitate to call it WWIII....I hope I'm right.

What does he think? Russia is just going to sit back and accept whatever Ukraine does?
And it all goes back to 2014.....
And Russia not wanting NATO in Ukraine and Biden rattling that carrot in their nose.

Well, Ukraine did violate their treaty with Russia. Chernobyl disaster is in the land Russia wants too, and part of Ukraine wants to join with Russia. What's the solution? A new peace treaty. This has become a no-win situation.

I think ukraine is going to have to give up the land Russia has already occupied.
But I also think everybody there has had enough....this war is going nowhere except to a really big, extended war.
So it has to end except the Biden adm looks like they WANT this war. It's sick.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday signed a revised nuclear doctrine declaring that a conventional attack on Russia by any nation that is supported by a nuclear power will be considered a joint attack on his country.

Putin’s endorsement of the new nuclear deterrent policy comes on the 1,000th day after he sent troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.

It follows U.S. President Joe Biden’s decision to let Ukraine strike targets inside Russia with U.S.-supplied longer-range missiles.

The signing of the doctrine, which says that any massive aerial attack on Russia could trigger a nuclear response, reflects Putin’s readiness to threaten use of the country’s nuclear arsenal to force the West to back down as Moscow presses a slow-moving offensive in Ukraine.

Asked about whether the updated doctrine was deliberately issued on the heels of the U.S.′ decision to ease restrictions on Ukraine using its longer-range missiles to strike Russia, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the document was published “in a timely manner” and that Putin instructed the government to update it earlier this year so that it is “in line with the current situation.”

Putin first announced changes in the nuclear doctrine in September, when he chaired a meeting discussing the proposed revisions.

The new version of the document states that an attack against his country by a nonnuclear power with the “participation or support of a nuclear power” will be seen as their “joint attack on the Russian Federation.”

It doesn’t specify whether such an attack would necessarily trigger a nuclear response. It mentions the “uncertainty of scale, time and place of possible use of nuclear deterrent” among the key principles of the nuclear deterrence.

At the same time, it spells out conditions for using nuclear weapons in greater detail compared to the previous version of the doctrine, noting they could be used in case of a massive air attack involving ballistic and cruise missiles, aircraft, drones and other flying vehicles.

The war correspondent I watched inside Ukraine said that the military is low on man power and ammo and Russia is still advancing. Ukraine can't go on, and Zelensky needs to go. He is war monger too and getting richer.

Beijing, China - China called for Russia to exercise "calm" and "restraint" after President Putin threatened to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine.

Beijing weighed in on Wednesday, urging "calm" and "restraint" during foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian's regular press conference. China also vowed to play a "constructive role" in ending the conflict.

"Under the current situation, all relevant parties need to remain calm and restrained and jointly seek deescalation and lower strategic risks through dialogue and consultation," spokesperson Lin said.
