No mystery. History is history. Protestants are called Protestants for a reason....Protest Churches. The early Protestants hated the Catholics and the Catholics considered them heretics. In the Protestants defense the corruption of the Church was obvious. Luther's 95 theses was accurate. Still hatred is not a good foundation for a religion. If the Pope didn't subscribe totally to the Council of Trenth, he would not have been elected, because to achieve that high office, one has to be totally committed to the RCC and all its official teachings.

Pope Francis has made the statement that his faith is on Jesus, but it is not the Jesus of the Bible. It is the "Jesus" of the RCC. It is a mental image of Jesus that fits in with RCC official doctrine, but it is much of an idolatrous image as the large crucifix that is on the wall behind the altar of many Catholic churches.

I recently attended a Requiem Mass for the mother of a family friend. The church had an enormous Christ on the cross on the wall behind the altar. Sort of like the big statues of Buddha in pagan temples. It was interesting that it depicted a European Jesus which shows that it was the sculptor's impression of what he though Jesus looked like.
