Those "pagan gods" were planets created by God originally. The names were probably astronomical rather than astrological.

I thought you said that they were named by Pope Gregory. ??? (post #21)
Sorry for the misunderstanding….

As we know, a calendar is a system of fixing the beginning, length, and divisions of the year and arranging these divisions in order. So humans have always had ways for dividing time. The Jews had their own calendar, based on a lunar system.

The Julian calendar was introduced by Julius Caesar in 46 B.C.E., to give the Roman people a solar-year time arrangement in place of the lunar year. The Julian calendar consists of 365 days in a year, with the exception that on each fourth year (leap year), one day is added, to make it 366 days. However, in the course of time, it was found that the Julian calendar year is actually a little more than 11 minutes longer than the true solar year. By the 16th century C.E., a discrepancy of ten full days had accumulated. Thus, in 1582, Pope Gregory XIII introduced a slight revision, instituting what is now known as the Gregorian calendar. By papal bull ten days were omitted from the year 1582, so that the day after October 4 became October 15.

The Gregorian calendar promoted the idea that centuries not divisible by 400 are not to be considered leap years. For example, unlike the year 2000, the year 1900 was not made a leap year because the number 1,900 is not divisible by 400. The Gregorian calendar is now the one in general use in most parts of the world.
As a revision of the Julian Calendar it carried over the names of the pagan gods worshipped by the Romans.
Gregory had the option to change the names of those pagan gods, but for some reason, he did not.

How is the true God honored by the names of pagan gods in the first place? The Julian calendar was formed before Christ…..before Christianity existed…..Gregory was “Roman Catholic”…does that explain?

I go to church and sing resurrection songs, and remember our Risen Savior Jesus. And I have a nice meal with my brother and his family (all the family that's left now).

So please give us chapter and verse from God's Word that instructs the Body of Christ to have one day a year to celebrate Jesus' resurrection and Jesus' birth

We should rejoice for these two events daily, but I'd like to see where the Lord commands that one day a year be set aside for each of these events. Thanks

Please give me chapter and verse that says I can't have dinner with my brother at any excuse? And where is the chapter and verse that tells me we cannot focus on singing resurrection hymns on that Sunday?

Don't make the mistake of supposing rejoicing for Jesus' resurrestion is a one day a year thing, and don't make the mistake of thinking I'm worshiping something other than Jesus in doing so on that particular day.

We have liberty in the Lord. Who are you?

Much love!

Well now, here is something we actually agree on….

Only the death of Christ was to be commemorated, and because the memorial of Christ’s death was a replacement for the Jewish Passover, (as the true sacrificial “lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”) Christians would come together to remember Christ’s sacrifice….not at Easter, but on the day that corresponds to the lunar calendar used by God’s people in the first century….Nisan 14. The day of the full moon at the Spring equinox of the Northern Hemisphere, but in the opposite season in the Southern Hemisphere. Passover was a yearly event.

Christendom likes to add to what God’s word says about commemorating Christ’s death.
Nowhere are we told to add a celebration of his resurrection because his death is what provides the only means of salvation. His resurrection, although a remarkable event, simply facilitated his return to heaven. He was raised as a spirit and stayed for 40 days after his resurrection, to strengthen his disciples for the difficult road ahead, before returning to his Father.

As the Jews did not celebrate birthdays because of their pagan origin, no celebration of his birth was held, as all the first Christians were Jewish and they were commanded NOT to imitate the pagans in their celebrations or practices. (Deut 18:9-12)
Birthdays were important to astrologers because a birthdate was used to create horoscopes, and predicting the future was forbidden unless it came from God via his prophets.

I see no reason to criticize them.
As you say, "The Julian calendar was formed before Christ…..before Christianity existed..."
Where is the transgression?

If you see no “transgression”, then Pope Gregory was a true Christian who promoted the worship of the only true God….and if you believe that he had no authority over what was retained in the calendar that bears his name boastfully, then there is not much more I can say to you….. :no reply:

Before calendars, humankind looked to the heavens to mark time. The movement of the heavenly bodies created by God mark the way.
The sun marked the beginning end end of each day. The phases of the moon marked each month. And so on.

But you say, pagan, pagan...

Genesis 1:14 NIV
And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night,
and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years,

You keep forgetting something, nowhere in the scriptures is there a requirement for a wedding ceremony to be married and wedding ceremonies are strictly a Pagan custom. Even modern Christian weddings have Pagan aspects to them. Nowhere in the scriptures does it say to build churches ....churches in he scriptures are congregations. Nowhere in the scriptures does it say to print Bibles. Nowhere in the scriptures does it say to stop polygamy or selling our daughters as sex slave....concubinage. And nowhere in the scriptures does it say we cannot have holidays. Bible only does not work.

The brain works on terms….words….images….and experiences.
So we have 2 words here that people need to understand. And words have definitions but those definitions can be modified by how they are used in different time periods.

Gentile
The Greek word most often translated to gentile is ἔθνος. This word simply means nations or people. In the Bible, when this word is used, it is not describing one nation or ethnic group, rather the term gentile refers to anyone who is not of Jewish descent or not part of the Old Covenant with Yahweh. In the New Testament gentile would also broadly describe those who do not believe in Judeo-Christian God or Godhead.

And Peter said, those dagum Pagans! Peter would not say this because it is a 15th century English word.

Pagan
Today people use this term to refer to people that are not Judeo-Christian and worship gods other than the Judeo-Christian God or of the occult or witchcraft. This word is not a biblical word. In that time period the word gentile defined all this. Christian had/have prayers and miracles and gentiles had incantations and magic.

But some Christians use a broader definition of Pagan like Christian religions that they do not like….like Catholics and with 30,000 Protestant denominations maybe other Protestant denominations like Jehovah’s Witnesses.

But actually the English word Pagan comes from the classical Latin word pagus which originally meant region delimited by markers. Then the word paganus had also came to mean or related to the countryside, country dweller, or villager or what we would call a country hick.

In the 4th or 5th century Christian authors added a religious meaning to the word paganus meaning those that did not worship the Judeo-Christian Godhead and even Jews because of the animosity towards Jews referring to them as “killers of Christ”

But our religion is about the Godhead loving the Pagans and changing Christianity forever. We are Gentile-Christian our religious heritage goes back to Pagans being converted to Christianity by Paul’s ministry.

Acts 13:46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: "It was necessary to speak the word of God to you first. But since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.

Acts 18:4-6 And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and tried to persuade Jews and Greeks. When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul was occupied with the word, testifying to the Jews that the Christ was Jesus. And when they opposed and reviled him, he shook out his garments and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.”

Acts 28:28 Therefore let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen.

Romans 3:29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also,

Romans 11:25 Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

Acts 10:45 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles

Are you overlooking the fact that humans made gods out of those heavenly bodies…..?

God is a time keeper and the heavenly bodies are timed with extraordinary precision, but when they become gods, that is another matter entirely.
Sun worship formed the basis of Roman paganism…it is still very evident in the RCC to this day.

The intent of the calendar, as far as I can tell, was to use (document/codify) what God intended for measuring time.
Extending that to pagan idolatry is just that, an extension.

Had enough deflection?

The point being made is... when it comes to being a child of God and walking in agreement with Him as He desires... we don't just jump out and decide to do thing or not to do things on our own.

Real Christians are led by the Holy Ghost.... Who is not leading anybody to celebrate Jesus' birth (christmas) or resurrection (easter).... the reason the Lord is not leading anyone to celebrate these days because they are things man decided to do that have turned in to idolatry.

Nowhere in scripture is the Lord instructing anybody to celebrate these pagan holler days disagree.gif

So you say. You are not my judge.

God never commanded Hannukah, either. Do you have a problem with that? Jesus didn't.

Much love!
