China’s DeepSeek AI Moves the Capital of Tech from Palo Alto to Hangzhou​

In a matter of days, the news of China’s AI sensation, DeepSeek R1, has gone from a gentle breeze to a Force 5 hurricane. It’s clear now that no one in Silicon Valley or Washington DC had the slightest idea that their world was about to be turned upside-down by an innovative new product that would shift the geopolitical plates further eastward. But that, in fact, is what has happened. And it’s not simply because DeepSeek’s latest version matches or exceeds the performance of America’s best model, OpenAI; but because it is cheaper, more accessible and more transparent. This is AI for everyone regardless of their station or income. And its sudden emergence from ‘out of the blue’ has cast doubts on the ability of western tech giants to anticipate the capability of their competitors or to lead an industry that is essential for Washington to preserve its ever-loosening grip on global power. Here’s a brief recap from Venture Beat:
….thanks to the release of DeepSeek R1, a new large language model that performs “reasoning” similar to OpenAI’s current best-available model o1 — taking multiple seconds or minutes to answer hard questions and solve complex problems as it reflects on its own analysis in a step-by-step, or “chain of thought” fashion.
Not only that, but DeepSeek R1 scored as high or higher than OpenAI’s o1 on a variety of third-party benchmarks…, and was reportedly trained at a fraction of the cost…, with far fewer graphics processing units (GPU) under a strict embargo imposed by the U.S., OpenAI’s home turf.
But unlike o1, which is available only to paying ChatGPT subscribers of the Plus tier ($20 per month) and more expensive tiers (such as Pro at $200 per month), DeepSeek R1 was released as a fully open source model, which also explains why it has quickly rocketed up the charts of AI code sharing community Hugging Face’s most downloaded and active models. “Freaking out” is probably the understatement of the century. Silicon Valley is in a full-blown emotional meltdown and the path forward is far from certain. As we will see further along, western tech mandarins are going to have to return to Square 1 and modify their approach to the new reality. In short, the agenda is being set by people with different priorities, values and beliefs who live 10,000 miles away. They do not ascribe to the idea that advances in technology should reinforce police-state surveillance or other repressive forms of social control.(as they do in the West) Their vision of the future is altogether different, but invariably optimistic.
Did you notice that “DeepSeek R1 scored as high or higher than OpenAI’s o1 (while) under a strict embargo imposed by the US”?
In other words, these Chinese whiz-kids created their cutting-edge version with one hand tied behind their back. They shrugged off Washington’s onerous sanctions and beat Uncle Sam at his own game, which is quite an accomplishment. (Forbes: “U.S. export controls on advanced semiconductors were intended to slow China’s AI progress, but they may have inadvertently spurred innovation.”) Here’s more:
thanks to the fact that it is fully open source, people have already fine-tuned and trained many multiple variations of the model for different task-specific purposes such as making it small enough to run on a mobile device or combining it with other open-source models. Even if you want to use it for development purposes, DeepSeek’s API costs are more than 90% cheaper than the equivalent o1 model from OpenAI. Is the author right; are the tech-honchos and their moneybags allies “freaking out” over DeepSeek or do they see it as a minor glitch on the road to AI supremacy? Here’s how he answers that question:
A message posted to Blind… has been making the rounds suggesting Meta is in crisis over the success of DeepSeek because of how quickly it surpassed Meta’s own efforts to be the king of open source AI with its Llama models.

It sounds like a lot of people are very concerned, and for good reason. DeepSeek is a nuclear bomb detonated in the heart of Silicon Valley. It is a straight-up challenge to America’s de facto Royal Family of tech Brahmins who thought their reign would last forever. Now they find themselves playing ‘catch-up’ with an upstart cadre of bluestocking brainiacs who are bringing their world crashing down around them. More importantly, the future of AI is being decided in Hangzhou not Palo Alto which means we might see a lull in the warmaking as Uncle Sam finds it harder to finance his endless bloodletting. What a welcome reprieve that would be.
The author of the above piece even quotes one of my favorite analysts on X, Arnaud Bertrand, an invaluable source of unbiased information about developments in China. Here’s what he said:
“There’s no overstating how profoundly this changes the whole game. And not only with regards to AI, it’s also a massive indictment of the US’s misguided attempt to stop China’s technological development, without which Deepseek may not have been possible…”
Yep, the whole semiconductor embargo-thing backfired spectacularly illustrating once again that we are ruled by incompetent lamebrains who love to punish people for violations to rules they make up on-the-fly. Just look at the mess these ‘geniuses’ have made.

We’ll end with Bertrand’s insightful critique of Trump’s $500 billion Stargate boondoggle which will be obsolete before they even break ground:
Stargate, if it goes forward, is likely to become one of the biggest wastages of capital in history:
1) It hinges on outdated assumptions about the importance of computing scale in AI (the ‘bigger compute = better AI’ dogma), which DeepSeek just proved is wrong.
2) It assumes that the future of AI is with closed and controlled models despite the market’s clear preference for democratized, open-source alternatives
3) It clings to a Cold War playbook, framing AI dominance as a zero-sum hardware arms race, which is really at odds with the direction AI is taking (again, open-source software, global developer communities, and collaborative ecosystems)
4) It bets the farm on OpenAI—a company plagued by governance issues and a business model that’s seriously challenged DeepSeek’s 30x cost advantage.

In short it’s like building a half a trillion dollars digital Maginot line: a very expensive monument to obsolete and misguided assumptions. This is OpenAI and by extension the US fighting the last war.

OpenAI, Softbank, and Oracle will be part of the joint venture called “Stargate.” The tech firms plan to invest $500 billion over four years to build artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure across the US, beginning with a massive data center in Texas.

Larry Ellison has made some startling admissions about controlling people through technology; he said “Citizens will be on their best behavior, because we’re constantly recording and reporting everything that is going on.”

The CIA was Oracle’s first customer and the company is reliant on government contracts.

Ellison once declared, “The Oracle database is used to keep track of basically everything. The information about your banks, your checking balance, your savings balance, is stored in an Oracle database. Your airline reservation is stored in an Oracle database. What books you bought on Amazon is stored in an Oracle database. Your profile on Yahoo! is stored in an Oracle database.”

Larry Ellison is Jewish and is loyal to Israel. It is unknown how much information Oracle shares with the Israel. Oracle employs over 400 workers in Israel and Safra Catz, an Israeli banker billionaire, is the CEO of Oracle. Documents released by Edward Snowden in 2014 revealed that “Israel aggressively spies on the US.” Newsweek reported that Israel’s spying is covered up because Israel has powerful connections in Congress.

Larry Ellison mentored Elon Musk and Steve Jobs. Ellison is said to be the world’s second richest person.
Bill Gates’ Microsoft owns 49% of OpenAI.

Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI, was ousted by the company’s board as CEO in 2023 due to safety concerns; he was later reinstated following pressure from the staff and investors. Because OpenAI employees sign non-disclosure agreements, the “safety concerns” are a mystery.

Suchir Balaji, a former OpenAI engineer, was called by the NY Times as a witness in a lawsuit and was said to be a whistleblower against OpenAI regarding safety issues. Balaji was recently found dead in his apartment and local authorities deemed it a suicide, but evidence points to murder. Watch Tucker Carlson’s shocking interview with Balaji’s mother in the link.

Sam Altman’s sister filed a lawsuit a few weeks ago accusing him of sexually abusing her and raping her beginning when she was 3 years old and he was 12. Altman says he is gay and has been an activist for LGBTQ.

Shares of US-based technology company Oracle surged as much as 6.5% in late-afternoon trading following a CBS News report indicating that President Donald Trump plans to announce billions of dollars in private sector investment to expand America’s artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Sources say OpenAI, Softbank, and Oracle will be part of the joint venture called “Stargate.” The heads of the tech firms plan to invest $100 billion, then up to $500 billion over four years, in building AI infrastructure across the US.

SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, Sam Altman of OpenAI, and Larry Ellison of Oracle will be in the White House on Tuesday afternoon. There were no further details about the Stargate JV, except with the understanding that more information will be unveiled later.

According to sources, Stargate will begin with a massive data center in Texas, with additional AI projects planned across other states. Other investors are expected to join the venture.

About a year ago, The Information reported that Microsoft and OpenAI were planning to invest $100 billion in data centers known as Stargate. The report also highlighted how OpenAI sourced cloud infrastructure from Oracle. It’s unclear if this effort was tied to the current Stargate JV.

Also, it remains unclear if Masayoshi Son’s plan for SoftBank Group to invest $100 billion in projects in the US over the next four years is part of the effort.

Trump stated last month after a meeting with Son that investments in building AI infrastructure would create 100,000 jobs.

I was 18 when it all started. As in previous years, I went to the synagogue to pray on the day of the Jewish New Year. On the way home, a man dressed in black with a beard and a black hat approached me. I immediately recognised that he belonged to Chabad, a Jewish Orthodox movement. We hit it off and exchanged a few friendly words. A few days later, he came to my house and convinced my mother to let me go to New York for ten days or so to the headquarters of the Chabad Lubavitch "community". I was to be taken care of, and all she had to do was pay for my plane ticket. At his and my insistence, she agreed. How could I refuse to leave my grey and dull Parisian suburb for the city of all possibilities, of all dreams, New York City?

When I got there, I saw a black tide, a mass of men dressed the same way as their master. He had died ten years earlier, but they all spoke of him and acted as if he were alive, present and omniscient, a kind of god. They quickly taught me that the God of Abraham was far away and unreachable, and the only way to reach him, to talk to him, to ask him for something, was through the funnel, the intermediary, the rabbi of Lubavitch, his name: Menachem Mendel Schneerson.

All the master's habits - his clothes, his tastes, his customs, his tastes, his writings - were practised with care, studied and spread not only in Lubavitch synagogues, which are implanted in over 100 countries worldwide (including the 50 states in the US) but much more widely, on a global scale, in every synagogue in the world, thanks to the rabbi's emissaries.

In the vast majority of synagogues that are modern and respectful of humankind, there is a Chabad man whose aim is to spread the guru's toxic and dangerous teachings.

I looked around me; they had pictures of him absolutely everywhere: on the walls of their houses, in their restaurants, their cars, their prayer books, their pockets, their wallets, etc... the only place I didn't see any was in the bathroom and toilets. They were happily obsessed with him.

I returned home with a black Kippa on my head, inscribed with their mantra on it, their favourite phrase, their leitmotiv: "Long live our master, our teacher, our rabbi, the king messiah, forever and ever." For several years in Paris, I continued to study with them and learn their teachings, their beliefs and their goals:

1) Jewish people emanate from a divine essence, "from the thought of God". They are infinitely superior to non-Jews, it's almost difficult, incorrect or odd to compare them. To take a simple example, if God were a fruit, let's say an orange, the Jews would be the seeds because the seeds are at the core of the orange and concentrate all the potentialities, they can grow, in turn, an orange. On the other hand, non-Jews would be the peelings who can only reproduce what it is.

Non-Jews are inherently egotistical, and any good they do is merely the result of the benefit they hope to derive from it later, except for a few righteous ones.

2) The annihilation of the self is one of their fundamental pillars. The self, the person's will, desires, expectations, dreams and wishes, must recede as those of the master advance. This is one of the first requirements that all should agree to, from the people in the movement to those like me, who weren't dressed like them but who had a long experience of the movement and had accepted their beliefs, their practices and the master's will, thus refusing to make my own choices and denying my free will. I was on the verge of wearing the hat, so to speak, for many years.

3) Divination and cartomancy. The Chabad guru had thousands of epistolary correspondences with Jews from all over the world, who consulted him during his lifetime. These letters were compiled in books and called the "Holy Letters" or "Igueroth Kodesh" in Hebrew, and although they usually serve to reaffirm the master's teachings, a divinatory practice was introduced by this sect into Jewish communities and beyond: to consult the master's spirit, one must think of their question, think of him and open a page of this book at random. The answer to your question or a hint of it must be on one of the pages. The practice has spread like wildfire in Jewish circles, to the point where now, an App and websites are available online, where people can click a button to "ask for a blessing" or "receive an answer", which means drawing a letter at random.

I don't think this Chabad idol and his sect, who brainwashed so many people and, as of today, are still not held accountable for anything, deserved to be awarded The Gold Medal of The American Congress.

I can't sum up in a few lines the psychological hold I was under from 18 to 28, the impact on my life, and how I got out of it. I suggest you read my book, A Thunderous Elephant and dig into the references I provide. There's a lot more than you can imagine.

For several years now, I have been harassed by governmental organisations, including the DGSI (in Paris) and Mossad. I recently renounced my Israeli citizenship to push them away. Russia to Launch Nationwide Biometric Payment System in 2025​

Russia is preparing to launch a comprehensive facial recognition payment system by 2025, aiming to create one of the largest biometric payment networks in the world. This initiative will build upon the existing Face Pay platform, which has been gradually implemented since 2021, and is a joint effort between Sberbank and the National Payment Card System (NSPK). To support the rollout, approximately two million biometric payment terminals are planned to be installed nationwide.

The project is set to begin with an initial rollout in Moscow’s Metro system in 2024. Face Pay, already in use in Moscow’s subway and several other cities like Kazan and Nizhny Novgorod, allows commuters to make payments by scanning their faces. By the second half of 2025, the system will expand across the country, enabling users to register their biometric data through their banking apps and make payments at any terminal, regardless of their bank.

Dmitry Malykh, Senior Vice President at Sber, confirmed the timeline, stating, “The project roadmap has already been established, and the network launch is slated for the second half of 2025. We are developing a biometric payment standard, based on which other market participants will be able to launch their biometric services.”

This initiative will also be integrated into Russia’s Unified Biometric System (UBS), a state-run database that centralizes biometric data for identification and authentication purposes. Since 2022, state-owned banks have been required to transfer customer biometric information to this system. However, user adoption has been sluggish, with the UBS database yet to surpass three million users, reflecting public resistance and potential privacy concerns.

The government envisions the system as more than just a payment platform. Planned features include verifying a user’s age for restricted purchases and enabling contactless check-ins at hotels.

There are also plans to support alternative payment methods, including cryptocurrency transactions, making the platform adaptable to emerging financial technologies.

Many have raised concerns over the system’s dual use, as facial recognition technology has already been leveraged to assist law enforcement in tracking political dissenters. While marketed as a tool for convenience, its integration into surveillance networks highlights significant privacy risks.

Once fully deployed, this system will allow individuals to make facial recognition payments seamlessly across different banks, marking the most ambitious step in Russia’s push toward a biometrically driven financial infrastructure.

He won the 2024 election by promising to end the war in Ukraine and by not being "Genocide Joe." If Trump's second term is marked by peace and prosperity, he will retire in 2028 as a success. If war and bloodshed reign, and the economy suffers, Trump will be viewed as an epic failure.

Israel is not a US ally because it refuses to declare its borders. (It can't have borders, because it needs to keep attacking its neighbors and stealing their land.) But though ineligible for ally status, Israel has become America's master, by having its loyalists buy politicians and the media. And the worst Israeli extremists--the West Bank settlers, who are widely loathed even among their fellow Israeli Jews--seem to think they have become Trump's masters. If Trump obeys them, disaster will inevitably follow.

On his first day in office, Trump signaled his loyalty to Ben-Gvir and Smotrich by rescinding Biden's sanctions on the worst of the Israeli settlers. The settlers celebrated by burning Palestinians' houses and vehicles, injuring at least 21 people. (The settlers and their IDF accomplices have killed more than 860 people in the West Bank during the past 15 months, including 175 children, and wounded more than 6700--part of an ongoing slow-motion genocide that has continued for decades, in parallel with the more intensive genocide of Gaza.)

The settlers Trump de-sanctioned are terrorists devoted to stealing Palestinians' land through murder and vandalism. They claim that God gave them land thousands of years ago, so they have the sacred right to slaughter the current owners, whom they regard as no better than animals, and confiscate their belongings.

Trump's support for the craziest Israeli settlers is incompatible with his expressed wish to bring peace to the region. The settlers are squatting on land that the whole world agrees belongs to Palestinians--land that Israel stole in its 1967 invasion of its neighbors. Even Israel's 1967 leaders admitted that stealing territory through war is unacceptable and illegal, and vowed that they would be giving back the occupied territories as soon as a suitable peace plan could be arranged.

The 1993 Oslo Accords formalized the return of the Occupied Territories in return for lasting peace. But Israel refused to meet its commitments, instead sending more than half a million invading terrorist settlers to slaughter Palestinians and permanently encroach on their land under the protection of the Israeli Army. That terror invasion made possible by the 1995 murder of Yitzhak Rabin, the Israeli Prime Minister who had been planning to comply with the Oslo Accords.

Trump's first-term "peace plan," the so-called Abraham Accords, was a disaster that made the current genocidal war inevitable. No regional nation, and even less the Palestinians, can genuinely support any peace plan that does not require Israel to withdraw from all of the Occupied Territories stolen in the 1967 war. Yet Trump signaled the exact opposite, by moving the US Embassy to Occupied Jerusalem and supporting the extremist settlers. The regional countries that signed the "Satan Accords" as they are known in the region did so under duress, to gain rewards and avoid punishments, with their fingers crossed, knowing that what they were signing was absurd. They might as well have been signing a deed giving Israel ownership of a distant galaxy: "Sure, we'll sign off on palpable nonsense, just give us the money."

Will Trump make the same mistake twice? Today, he knows which side doesn't want peace. On December 13, 2021 Trump said Netanyahu "never wanted to make peace...F*** him" and added that Palestinian leader Abbas was the one who genuinely wanted peace.

Netanyahu has in fact dedicated most of his political career to trying to draw the US into a war on Iran. If Trump continues to rubber-stamp the lunatic actions of the worst Israelis, he could find himself on the losing side of the US-Iran war modeled in the 2003 Millennium Challenge exercise. As that war game discovered, all-out US war with Iran would likely lead to thousands of American deaths, the closure of the Straits of Hormuz, the destruction of most Middle Eastern oil infrastructure, and the worst global economic calamity ever.

Trump's second term, and his place in history, are already in serious jeopardy.

The settlers celebrated by burning Palestinians' houses and vehicles, injuring at least 21 people. The settlers Trump de-sanctioned are terrorists devoted to stealing Palestinians' land through murder and vandalism. Trump's support for the craziest Israeli settlers is incompatible with his expressed wish to bring peace to the region. Even Israel's 1967 leaders admitted that stealing territory through war is unacceptable and illegal, and vowed that they would be giving back the occupied territories as soon as a suitable peace plan could be arranged.

The 1993 Oslo Accords formalized the return of the Occupied Territories in return for lasting peace. But Israel refused to meet its commitments, instead sending more than half a million invading terrorist settlers to slaughter Palestinians and permanently encroach on their land under the protection of the Israeli Army. That terror invasion made possible by the 1995 murder of Yitzhak Rabin, the Israeli Prime Minister who had been planning to comply with the Oslo Accords.

Trump's first-term "peace plan," the so-called Abraham Accords, was a disaster that made the current genocidal war inevitable. No regional nation, and even less the Palestinians, can genuinely support any peace plan that does not require Israel to withdraw from all of the Occupied Territories stolen in the 1967 war. Yet Trump signaled the exact opposite, by moving the US Embassy to Occupied Jerusalem and supporting the extremist settlers. The regional countries that signed the "Satan Accords" as they are known in the region did so under duress, to gain rewards and avoid punishments, with their fingers crossed, knowing that what they were signing was absurd.
