Question of the week: Genesis 1:26-27 states that God created humans in his own image. Do you think the angels also were made in the image of God? Weren’t they referred to as ‘sons of God?’

My answer: The term “sons of God” is used in the Bible to refer to either angels or to humans who have been redeemed from their sin. The Bible never refers to angels being made in the image of God but the angels being called the sons of God implies that in some context God did make them in his image. However, the manner in which God created humans in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) is distinct from the manner in which God created the angels in his image. …”

This author gives a qualified positive response to the question. What about you?

What does it mean to be created in the image of God?

What does it mean to be created in the image of God?
Capacity to reason, which means making choices beyond the instinctual level.

Years ago a tiger escaped from a zoo, killing a few people for food. People sought to kill the tiger. The judge denied the motion, determining the tiger acted as tigers do, according to their nature.

Brilliant decision because otherwise, responsibility would be shifted from image bearers of God to an animal, which is absurd.

Angels have the ability, the capacity, to reason. That would be one way that they are created in the image of God. Are there other ways?

We probably all have but weren’t aware of it. That you have and are aware of it is a blessing from above.

Do they look like Jesus?
They look as different as humans. In the spiritual realm I saw one that had long black hair, skinny, sunken chest. Another one was muscular with short black hair. In this world, they dress a little odd, but there are so many odd people that they blend in. They are stronger than us, not seeming so for their size.

Interesting. I see Jesus - to greater and lesser degrees - in all people. I was wondering if the same could be said of seeing angels.

To be made in the image and likeness of God is to be created to serve and to rule. Do the angels - the fallen as well as the holy - have the capacity to serve and to rule?

Would that not be another way that angels were made in the image of God?

The image and likeness of God - Jesus of Nazareth being the exact, the perfect, the unblemished, the untarnished image and likeness of God - knows evil and good.

Fallen mankind knows evil and good. The angels know evil and good. Would that be another way that we could say that they were created in the likeness of God?

I don't know about Angels hierarchy, except the ones that are the helpers of God's elect. I don't know what fallen angels look like, but I know what demons look like.

Thanks. There is a hierarchy among the angels, so some have ruling authority over others. All of the holy angels serve God, and the Messiah, and mankind in general.

It’s slightly off topic, or perhaps would make a good thread in its own right, but there is mention in the Bible of angels of the seven churches and of guardian angels.

All of this taken together infers - I’m inclined to think correctly, that the angels were created in the image of God.

The image and likeness of God - human beings - have the capacity, and are instructed in scripture to exhibit, to live, certain characteristics of God.

Do the angels exhibit any of the characteristics of God?

If they do, would that not be another way that they were created in the image of God?

What is the strongest argument against the angels having been created in the likeness of God?

I think the author of the short article quoted (and linked) in the OP provided it: the Bible doesn’t say that they were. (Why it doesn’t is worth thinking about.) I’m open to hearing other arguments against it.

From all accounts, they seem to look a lot like us. And then there's the issue of the sons of God leaving their former estate and taking wives from the daughters of men. So yeah, they were probably created in His image.

I've never seen one myself, but I have heard them sing.
What fallen demons did was to enter men, and mating with women. Angels were never created to create others. It is the same with demons today, they enter a man or women. You can tell by the destructive behavior of men and women if they have a demon.

Yes, angels do exhibit characteristics of their creator. They don't talk much either.

We look "the same image" in our flesh body and we do in our 1st age body where God referred to us as "angels" in the very "beginning" 1st age of time

We have 2 bodies... one for the 1st age(angel body.. celestial), and one for this 2nd age of flesh(terrestrial).

Our 1st age body is of different material (angel body material) than our flesh body for this 2nd age. It does not get old or perish like the flesh body does.

Elohim in the Hebrew is plural... God and the angels.

Genesis 1:26-27 reveals our flesh body "is the same image/looks the same" as our 1st age body (angel.. male or female).. and that God Himself also included Himself as the "He Him" in that He also will have a flesh body , named Himself Jesus (who is God in a flesh body here on earth for this 2nd age) so He could pay the price for sins and destroy death.

So..
We have 2 bodies.. different material
God referred to us as "angels" in the beginning when He first created us ( 1st age)...Our body was of one of angel or supernatural material in a different dimension from the beginning when God created us(1st age of time).
The 2nd body is a flesh material body for this age which is in a different dimension .
Our flesh body for this 2nd age "looks the same image or picture" as our 1st body as Genesis 1:26-27 declares.

Genesis 1:27
So God created man(flesh man) "in his own image"( our "image" of our 1st age supernatural body or angel body material we have from the 1st age ), in the image of God created He "Him"(Jesus..God included Himself that He also will have a flesh body for this 2nd age); male and female created He "them"( us people.. flesh male and female).

God created people... referred to us as "angels" in the 1st age.
He ended that 1st age as there was rebellion when Lucifer tried to oust God and people followed him. God knows each of us and our decisions

2nd age is now. Lucifer and those people who followed him refused a flesh body for this age of time. Instead left Heaven and came to earth to cause chaos and try to thwart GOd's plan of salvation.
An "angel" is just a person in their 1st age body which is a different material than our 2nd age flesh body.. God referred to us as angels 1st age of time

No one's angel body has yet been destroyed by God.. that body is in Heaven in a different dimension. We all have to be "born from above".. God puts us also in a flesh body also here on earth for a short time.

You are making up your own definitions. Elohim is plural for one God, meaning the trinity. You Genesis 1:27 is your own opinion, not God's word. Did God tell you this? or you just made it up.
