Question

What does it mean that no one knows the day or the hour (Mark 13:32)?

Answer

In Mark 13:14–37, Jesus prepares His followers for intense persecution and tribulation in the days ahead and especially during the end times. He gives them hope to endure these trials by describing His glorious return as the conquering King of the universe (verses 24–27). To keep them from despairing in dark times, the Lord wants them to live in readiness for His second coming. “However,” Jesus states, “no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. And since you don’t know when that time will come, be on guard! Stay alert!” (verses 32–33, NLT).

“Day” and “hour” are often used in Scripture as references to time in general (see Matthew 7:22; 10:19; 24:42, 44, 50; 25:13; 26:45). But in Mark 13, Jesus focuses on a specific event in the future. Because no one knows the day or the hour of His return, Jesus stresses the need to pay attention, stay awake, and be ready at a moment’s notice. Multiple times in Mark 13, Jesus calls for vigilant watchfulness: “Be on guard! Stay alert!” (verse 33, NLT), “Watch for his return” (verses 34, NLT), “You, too, must keep watch!” (verse 35, NLT), “Don’t let him find you sleeping when he arrives without warning” (verse 36, NLT), and “Watch for him!” (verse 37, NLT).

The disciples wanted to know when the end would come (see Mark 13:3–4). But Jesus told them that even He did not know (verse 33). In saying this, Jesus was actively humbling Himself and taking the form of a servant (see Philippians 2:7–8). Since no other mortal knows the time of Jesus’ return, Jesus voluntarily restricted His knowledge on that point. It was part of Jesus’ submission to the Father (see John 5:30; 6:38; 8:28–29) and His mission to live a human life. Jesus, in His humanity, didn’t know the day or hour of His return, nor did the angels in heaven, only God the Father. It is highly probable that Jesus, now in His glorified state, knows the day and hour of His return. But at that incarnate moment, speaking with His disciples, the information was not at Christ’s disposal. Later, just before His ascension, Jesus would remind them, “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority” (Acts 1:7). Jesus accepted His human limitations, and so must we. The thing that matters is being ready every day for His return.

Christians of every age have experienced persecution, natural disasters, and earthly trials. Genuine disciples must understand that these challenges are a daily reality of life in a fallen world. Yet, believers are not without hope because, in the end, our victorious King will return for us. In the meantime, since no one knows the day or the hour, we are to watch and be ready for Him no matter what we must endure as we continue His mission of spreading the good news of God’s kingdom.

Many have tried to predict the day of Christ’s return, but Scripture is straightforward—no one knows the day or the hour. Jesus said to stay awake because His coming will be a surprise: “Look, I will come as unexpectedly as a thief! Blessed are all who are watching for me, who keep their clothing ready so they will not have to walk around naked and ashamed” (Revelation 16:15, NLT; cf. 1 John 2:28).

Even tho' no one knows the day or hour; Christians should know the signs of Christ's return.

I Thessalonians 5:1-10 - But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. 2 For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. 3 For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. 8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

There are only 2 day and hours that qualify: When one is born, and when they die.

As for when the Lord comes...both are true. For when He comes--when He knocks and comes in, the old man dies and is born anew.

I see these signs getting more and more, closer and closer together and stronger: natural disasters.
Every generation since Jesus up to today thought they would be the "last generation"; and set dates, same as this generation. No MAN can know.

Has anyone ever wondered if the reason Jesus Himself did not know the day or hour was simply that God The Father had not yet spoken it? John 1 does specify Jesus as being the (capitol W) "Word" being with God and being God so, doesn't it make some kind of sense that God The Father, being patient and long suffering "not wanting any to perish" just was not ready, at that time, to speak it yet? Jesus only did what His Father directed Him to, and that is speak too.
Just what I have thought of and it has stuck a long time so it COULD be true, lol.

Hi Nancy,

The reason Jesus did not know the day or the hour, is because as the Son of man He was fully a man. If He had known, it would have just been the Father who had come and was born of Mary. Even so, the Two were One.

Any Christian can see that since Covid everything is not the same. Evil is worse in politics and society. Charities are hurting, homelessness, like I've never in my lifetime, have seen it this bad. There is a large divide between those with money and those not. The list goes on and on, we know the end is soon.

Hi Scott!
Yes, I know He was fully man but also fully God, He hears God The Father all the time throughout the gospels being fully man and God as He only does what God shows Him and say's to Him so wouldn't it be kind of going the other way in this one instance? If God said it, The Son did or said the same things, only when the Father spoke to Him.
Either way, it's only from my own mind that I wonder that maybe God did not speak it yet.
Thank you for the reply!

Jesus was fully man and fully God. Jesus raised the dead and healed the blind from birth as only God could. Read this: Luke 6:19 - And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all.

Only God could walk through a crowd and heal them all. This was a very, very large crowd.

@Rockerduck

As the Son of man, it was the man Jesus who went to the cross. But as both fully man and fully God, as it is written of Him, He walked with one foot on the land and the other on the sea (earth and heaven, flesh and spirit).

In Mark 13:14–37, Jesus prepares His followers for intense persecution and tribulation in the days ahead and especially during the end times. He gives them hope to endure these trials by describing His glorious return as the conquering King of the universe (verses 24–27). “Day” and “hour” are often used in Scripture as references to time in general (see Matthew 7:22; 10:19; 24:42, 44, 50; 25:13; 26:45). But in Mark 13, Jesus focuses on a specific event in the future. Why can't we take Jesus word for what it is? "NO ONE" knows the day or the hour. Why is that hard to understand?

Jesus discribes the social environment, "...just as in the days of Noah", but not a date or time, Jesus warns us, "...like a theif in the night", but not a date or time. Jesus gives us a bench mark, "immediately after the tribulation of those days", but not a date or time.

Jesus words "NO ONE KNOWS". If you can't trust Jesus word WHO YOU GONNA TRUST HUH? REALLY?

Yet another view!

A Galilean Marriage
2000 years ago …

Jesus and His disciples were from Galilee. Their customs concerning marriage were quite unique. His parables and literal teachings about His Second Coming and marriage were designed to imitate an event that they were all familiar with, MARRIAGE, which involved a year-long sequence of events.

The Bride; the Parable of the Ten Virgins, some being prepared and some not; the Groom coming “at an hour you do not expect”, “as a thief in the night”; that “only the Father knows the day and the hour”; that it will happen at night; “the trumpet will sound an alarm” and the bride is lifted up and carried away to the Father’s house, all were shadows and symbolic of Jesus Second Coming for the Church.

The Galilean Marriage begins with the Groom leaving his father’s home going to the home of the Bride. His father officiates the betrothal with the terms and dowry (price and down payment). Terms of the marriage were read publically and agreed upon. Gifts are given to the bride. A “cup of joy’ (wine) is shared and given to the Betrothed, who has a choice to accept it or reject it. She says yes, The wine is drunk and * the covenant is irrevocable.

1 year betrothal agreement, a cup of wine shared and the groom promises not to drink of the wine until the marriage is consummated.
* Jesus said He wouldn't drunk of the cup until He returned.

During this time, Bride and bridesmaids choose clothing and make dresses. This usually took months.

The Groom builds or buys and prepares a new home for the bride and feast.

Close to the time, within a week of the estimated year timeframe, but without a specific date, the bride and bridesmaids would wait in their clothes day and night for the Shofar to sound. Neither the groom nor the bride would know the exact date, only the father.

In the middle of the night, the father would decide and notify the son to go get his bride!

The Groom would sound the Shofar, walk through the streets towards his bride’s home and all the guests that were waiting for that day, ready to go, join them in the procession and/or meet at the Father’s house.
Everyone needed to be ready, dressed and have enough oil for their lamps.

The Bride would hear the Shofar from a distance and go out and meet the groom and the bridesmaids nearby as well.
And they all had oil for their lamps.
The Bride would be placed in a seat, two men would lift her up in the air and carry her off to the wedding chamber in the Father’s house. It was a chair on a stretcher like platform with two poles on each side.

The procession would enter into the Father’s house and the door was shut – no late comers allowed! The wedding and reception could last up to seven days.

Symbolism:

The groom leaves his father’s house and goes to where the bride is = Jesus comes from heaven to earth and becomes flesh and dwells among us.

Father = Father God

Betrothal period = Jesus First Coming, His New Covenant given, the Gospel goes out to the world

Cup of wine given to the Bride, a choice given = Cup at Last Supper representing New Covenant, the gospel is given to all and we have the choice to accept it or reject it

Once the Bride drinks the cup, the covenant is irrevocable = Once we have received Christ as our Lord and Savior, we believe and follow Him, our covenant with God is irrevocable, OSAS.

The Groom now states to the betrothed Bride, “You are now consecrated to me by the law of Moses and I will not drink this cup again with you until we drink it together in my father’s house” = Jesus likewise made the same claim during the Last Supper (Luke 22:18)

Dowry, down payment = Death (His payment) and resurrection of Christ , the belief in this grants us the Promise of Eternal Life

Groom’s preparation for the Bride’s home = “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places, if it were not so, I would have told you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.” John 14:2-3

The Groom does not know the day or hour of the wedding! = “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.” Matthew 24:36

Bride and bridesmaids needed to have lamps and oil = The Ten Virgins , but only half were prepared = represents the Bride/Church, prepared, they have their oil (Holy spirit) for their lamps. The others (Jews at that time or later, as unbelieving Gentiles did not have the Holy Spirit and so were not allowed into the kingdom of heaven.

The Father tells the son, “go get your Bride”, the Groom blows the trumpet to announce his coming, receives his bride , she is lifted up and carried off to the wedding chamber = “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord”. 1 Thes. 4 :16-17

The Bride enters the wedding chamber and sees guests waiting = these are Old Testament saints in Heaven

Wedding Feast = Marriage Supper (Rev.19:7-9)

“Looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, Who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.” Titut 2:13-1

Hello WalterAndDebbie,

My view was it happened during the siege of Jerusalem in 70ad. What day or hour, don't know exactly, but I believe faithfully it happened.
Many people interject that John was written in 90ad, but I believe all the letters in the bible are debatable. And believe it was written right at the time the siege was fixing to happen the reason why is because of what John wrote.

Revelation 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

I do not believe that soon would mean 2000 years later.

Today, I believe it simply means, no one knows the day or hour they will end up dying, but in that day, the Lord was coming to rescue the bride of Christ, and establish the new heavens and new earth, which I believe we live in today. Everything has been restored back to how it was in Adam and Eves day. Everyone has a choice to look and seek God, and eat from the tree of life, or the tree of knowledge and good and evil.

There are only 2 day and hours that qualify: When one is born, and when they die.

As for when the Lord comes...both are true. For when He comes--when He knocks and comes in, the old man dies and is born anew.

Father = Father God

1 Thes. 4 :16-17

Wedding Feast = Marriage Supper (Rev.19:7-9)

Question

What does it mean that no one knows the day or the hour (Mark 13:32)?

Dear Walter and Debbie,
I appreciate your "like" that you gave my post in the "Only one way to the Father" thread but I'm not sure what portions of the post you agreed with since my post stated many things.

This morning I found this thread that you started and since the subject is one of my great passions, I decided I would make a quick response.

First, some background: I used to teach "end-time" bible prophecy in the last church I attended nearly 20 years ago. This was just prior to my conversion. Much of what I understood and taught at that time was in line with the common end-time teachings of mainstream Christianity. However, I now reject those teachings completely.

Here is what I now hold in my heart as "truth": The "end-time" prophecies of Christ teach the spiritual events that will occur within the lives of each Elect person. Those spiritual events lead up to and include the time of the person's conversion when Christ returns to them (commonly called His "second coming") and pours out the Latter Rain of the Spirit (the baptism of the Spirit/Spirit of Truth). This is the same event that the 120 Jewish Elect experienced on the Day of Pentecost and what Paul experienced after being in Damascus for three days when he was blind and unable to eat or drink. When you have this understanding, you will realize that Christ's second coming is an individual spiritual event which cannot be seen with human eyes and that it is also a reoccurring event that has been happening to all the Elect throughout this entire age. If Christ does not return to a believer (a babe, one of the many who are called to be a saint) before they die, they simply were not chosen for this blessing and honor.

This verse applies:

Heb 9:28 So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him (like a "wise" virgin waiting on the Bridegroom to return).

The moment of conversion for an Elect person occurs when the "end" of the ages comes upon them. Paul confirmed this understanding in the verse below:

1Cor 10:11 Now all these things happened to them as types, and have been written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

Understanding end-time prophecy and the second coming of Christ as being an outwardly visible event that only happens one time at the literal end of the age is incorrect. That understanding comes from having a carnal understanding of Christ's "spirit" words (John 6:63). To correctly understand the New Covenant teachings of Christ, a person must have a spiritual understanding of His teachings. Those teachings primarily teach about certain aspects (here a little and there a little) of the pathway to salvation that happen within His Elect. Those spiritual steps that the Elect take along the pathway will lead them to their conversion/salvation. Nearly all the "types", parables, analogies and prophecies used by Christ are teaching about the spiritual events that happen to the Elect as they travel the pathway to their conversion. Matthew chapter 24 and the book of Revelation are two of the primary places in scripture which teach these spiritual steps.

Consider these key verses from the book of Revelation:

Rev 1:3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for THE TIME IS AT HAND. 4 John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne...

Rev 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Rev 4:8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

Rev 11:17 saying: “We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was and who is to come, because you have taken your great power and reigned.

Rev 22:7 Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.

Rev 22:10 And he saith unto me, SEAL NOT the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for THE TIME IS AT HAND.

Most of the end-time teachings of Revelation describe spiritual events that lead up to an Elect person's conversion. Those steps were immediately applicable to the Elect of John's day. The time for the fulfillment of those "sayings" was already "at hand" when John received the vision. John was even told that the prophecies were not sealed so as to be opened at some future time.

Also, notice the prophecy says that the Elect (those who are blessed) will "keep the sayings of the prophecy". If those sayings applied only to the literal end of the age, nearly all the Elect would not be able to keep those sayings. But since the prophecies teach the pathway to salvation that the Elect must experience to be converted, all the Elect will keep the sayings of the prophecies.

Because Christ's second coming is a spiritual event that happens to all the Elect before they die, James says that His coming "draweth nigh":

James 5:7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receives the EARLY and LATTER RAIN. 8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.

James was writing to "babes" who had only received the Early Rain of the Spirit. They were "called to be saints" but had not yet been converted. James was reminding them (the precious fruit of the earth) that they would not be ready for harvest into the Kingdom of Heaven until they have received both the Early and Latter Rains of the Spirit. James' main purpose in this verse was to remind these "babes" to be patient while they waited for the Lord to return with the Latter Rain and their conversion.

Paul says basically the same thing to the Corinthian church who were also "babes" who were waiting for the Lord to return for their conversion.

1Cor 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints (they were babes and were not confirmed to be saints yet), with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

1Cor 1:6 Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you
(Early Rain/confession of faith): 7 So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: 8 Who shall also confirm you unto the end (end of the ages/Latter Rain/conversion), that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ (judgment to remove the chaff from within them/when Christ reigns within a person).

One final point: Conversion requires a person to be given both the Early and Latter Rains of the Spirit, followed by the judgment of the Day of the Lord. After this judgment is complete, the Elect person will be converted.

If you have any questions on what I presented above, I would be willing to answer them with scripture.

Joe
