The Trump campaign is running a TV ad which quotes the following snippet from a statement Harris made in 2019: “Taxes are gonna have to go up.” Virtually nobody seeing the ad will remember that what she actually said was “estate taxes are gonna have to go up for the richest Americans.”

What should be done about such blatant misleading of the public? Should there be any filters at all? Should it be left to the networks who broadcast such statements to separate wheat from chaff -- and how would they go about it?

I think anyone watching ads needs to realise that their aim is to win you over, sell something. Ads are always deceptive in some way or another. Thankfully we don’t have political ads like the US, but personally they should all be watched with a pinch of salt and ignored.

The great thing about the public internet is that viewers have the opportunity to comment on what they view as misleading and out-of-context posts. With your example, the Harris campaign could follow up with comments on what she actually said (which, by the way, says that the “rich” have no right to pass along wealth to their offspring!).

The light shall always overcome the dark.

I simply don't watch them. When an ad comes on, I turn off the video or skip them. They're all liars and I have no tolerance for that waste of time and mental space.

The media is the avenue they use to get their deceptive messages out. That's why I mentioned it. The federal law is the way it is for the exact same reason. So ....who is there to censor the lies? Who determines what is a lie and what is truth? As @Rita said, it's up to us to censor for ourselves. Don't give them the time of day.

Thank you for your reply (but, I was hoping you wanted to discuss “taxing the rich”).

Of course there is the Harris campaign add stating President Trump wants to implement a national sales tax, implying family taxes will be drastically increased etc. Fact: President Trump (and many, many others) have proposed (old, old idea) REPLACING the (progressive) income tax with a sales tax.

Deceptive Ad? If one care about these claim, one will investigate!

Fact: many states (e.g., TN, TX, FL) have a state sales tax and no state income tax. There are pros and cons well worth discussing.

Note: it is between the “rich” and God whether they are generous with their wealth in helping others. Our mission continues to be to preach the gospel and turn them to God.

As someone who lives in a state which has neither one, I agree. Most services in NH are funded by property taxes at the local level, and a combination of other taxes at the state level. The property tax aspect is somewhat progressive, and I like that. Compared to income taxes, sales taxes are regressive (because the poor spend a greater percentage of their income).
