So how come so many deny HIM and yet believe they are truly of Him .
They have heeded the words of men that contradicted something , that twisted something
that made void something . And many who even lead christendom itself are KEY speakers and twisters
of THAT SOMETHING .
They have itchy ears which only Satan is allowed to scratch.
example . they follow another rainbow , they believe in another love
they trust in and follow men and another spirit that twists destruction unto them .
GOD is never gonna honor SIN . GOD IS NEVER GONNA HONOR another path
to HIM either . GOD is never gonnna honor another love .
IF any man , woman , child , even angel or donkey cometh
and tries to call good trangression of any sort , IT BE A LIAR .
thus if any spirit tries , if any man tries , if even an angel do speak and tries
to twist the scrips , YA BETTER FLEE that voice and very fast too .
MEN have a way o twisting scrips unto their own destruction and many a soul therebe
which just loves the twist , the lie , the idea that fed what THEY DESIRED
and not rather WHAT GOD DESIRED .
The problem is their relationship with God is "self-defined" rather than "Biblically defined".

For instance, the same "Christians" who angrily divorce their spouse over a single act of infidelity demand God put up with their non-stop infidelity "because grace".
phoneman of the triple sevens , WHEN I SAY MANY , ITS MANY who have done this unto their own destruction .
SO , the next time one tries to say JUDGE NOT to the one who corrects SIN and error within the church
TRY REMEMBERING that PAUL and the other apostels never DID SUCH A thing .
THEY NEVER PREACHED oh judge not we are all sinners , just hug and love . OOPSY
that has lead to only one thing within christendom . The leaven left uncorrected , GATHERED A HECK OF A LOT OF LEAVEN
and LEAVENED THEM UP BIG TIME .
this means WE GONNA HAVE TO OPEN US SOME BIBLE and learn IT for ourselves and stay refreshed in THEM PAGES .
cause many and its a number so high not me and ten thousand could count it , IS and HAS decieved the flocks .
The Bible says Christians who refuse to rebuke the brethren when they step out of line HATE them, but those who do so show their love for them. Leviticus 19:17 KJV

Whatever. The prodigals father welcomed him back with open arms. And my observation of the difference between separation and distance still stand even without the reference to the prodigal.
Right, but "distance" - stubbornly maintained through persistent denial of the Holy Spirit's attempts to close it - will inevitably increase to the point of "separation" from which there is no return - the Unpardonable Sin.

"There is a line, unseen by us,
that crosses ev'ry path;
The hidden boundary between,
God's mercy and His wrath".

Sorry but you don't seem to understand the point I'm making.

Thus its why men like paul would warn and remind the church to CONTINUE TO THE END
that we are made partakers of CHRIST , IF , IF we hold our confidence FIRM TO ...................THE END
THIS is why paul often warned as did peter , as DID JESUS HIMSELF
And if we look at the message to the seven churches we see this as well .
This is why paul told the church not to be HIGHMINDED but to fear
yet today , if i do so , or you , or others , we got told WE DONT TRUST IN GOD OR IN CHIRST .
Rather odd though , ITS HIS OWN WORDS
and rather odd they dont seem to TRUST IN THEM but rather in an teaching that came of MEN .
This will destroy folks .
Exhort one another daily , while it is today , LEST any of you becomes hardened by the deceitfulness of sin
lest any root of bitterness springs up and defiles you .
FOR we are made partakers of CHRIST ...............................IF
THEY Made this very clear .
And those words they spoke were inspired by GOD , BY THE SPIRIT .
yet today men twist these reminders unto their own destruction just as they do the other scrips .

Even after being born again, we can be both distanced from God and eventually separated again through not continuing in God's goodness like the Israelites were.

Romans 11:20-22

20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:
21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.
22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

We are misled into thinking that God's relationship with us is unconditionally loving as in having zero standards. God demonstrated His love toward us through Jesus' sacrifice. His love toward us is sacrificial beyond our understanding. But that doesn't mean He isn't allowed to have conditions or standards even if we think He shouldn't.

We love God's promises as we should. But they have conditions. We always need both.

My thinking is that through false teaching about separation, people are becoming less like the humble and contrite prodigal son who knew he needed mercy and more like abusive addict sons who think to manipulate the father into helping fix a crisis with no intention of ever changing or maintaining a healthy relationship.

The prodigal son felt unworthy and wretched. He didn't feel entitled to his Father's forgiveness and celebration. When we leave out the conditions to abiding in Jesus, we become entitled to the Father's open arms and they don't transform us the same way.

Instead we become like Isaiah 26:10

Let grace be shown to the wicked, Yet he will not learn righteousness; In the land of uprightness he will deal unjustly, And will not behold the majesty of the Lord.

i don't believe we can ever be truly separated from God once we are adopted into his family through our spiritual re-birth. Once we are 'in Christ' we will always be 'in Christ'. But we can lose our closeness to God through unrighteousness but God doesn't move away from us, He is always there when we turn around and come back to us. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.

Separation from God is not the same as being distanced from God. The first - separation - is common to all human kind without the cleansing blood of Jesus through whom we can be reconciled to God. The second - being distanced - is of ourselves once we are saved.

We are all separated from God by Sin; but as soon as we receive Jesus and are born again of His Spirit we belong to God, we become His sons and daughters for ever. He will never turn his back on us, although there may be times when we distance ourselves from Him through unrighteous thoughts or actions, but just like the father of the prodigal son He will be waiting with open arms to welcome us back into His presence.
I like the distinction you are making in your OP. Good topic! Thanks.

It occurs to me that some have distanced themselves from God unwittingly by placing the church between themselves and God. They have the idea that being in the church is making them close to God, when in fact their relationship with the church has replaced a one-to-one relationship with God.

The same thing can happen with Christian disciplines and works. The busyness of doing supplants the opportunity to build a relationship with God.
