Russia says it destroyed weapons delivered by US and EU to Ukraine

Russian forces have destroyed a logistics terminal in Odessa that held a large batch of foreign weapons, Moscow said on Saturday amid its ongoing military offensive in Ukraine.

However, the city’s authorities claimed that its air defense group destroyed two missiles but that another four hit a military target and residential buildings, leading to victims. It was not immediately clear if the civilian buildings were hit as a result of attempts by Ukrainian forces to strike down the missiles initially aimed at a military target.

According to Russian military spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov, in the afternoon, “high-precision long-range air-launched missiles” hit a logistics terminal located on a military airfield near Odessa, where “a large batch of foreign weapons received from the United States and European countries was stored.”

Russia has repeatedly warned NATO against sending arms to Ukraine and stated that it would consider arms convoys to be legitimate military targets.

Odessa regional emergency services earlier said that “as a result of an enemy shelling,” a sixteen-story residential building caught fire, which was put out in about two and a half hours.

“At this point it is known that 6 people died, including one child, and 18 people were injured. Two people were rescued from the rubble, 86 people were evacuated,” the authorities said in a statement.

Russia says it destroyed weapons delivered by US and EU to Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking later at a press conference in Kiev, elaborated on these claims.

“At this very moment eight people have died. Eighteen or twenty have been injured. A three-month old child died. A three-month old child was killed. When the war started, this child was just one month old. Can you imagine this?” Zelensky said.

According to the press office of Ukraine’s South Air Command, on Saturday the air defense group destroyed two cruise missiles, allegedly launched by Russian TU-95 strategic aircraft from the Caspian Sea, and two operational-tactical level UAVs, which “presumably corrected the flight of cruise missiles and placed active obstacles to air defenses.”

“Unfortunately, 2 missiles hit a military facility and 2 {hit} residential buildings,” the Ukrainian military claimed.

Since the launch of Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine, Moscow and Kiev have accused each other of committing war crimes, targeting civilians, hampering evacuations and violating international law. Several rounds of peace negotiations have not yielded any significant results.

Russia attacked the neighboring state in late February, following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, first signed in 2014, and Moscow’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. The Minsk agreements were a series of international agreements which sought to end the war in the Donbas region of Ukraine. While fighting subsided following the agreement's signing, it never ended completely, and the agreement's provisions were never fully implemented.[6] The Normandy Format parties agreed that the Minsk II remains the basis for any future resolution to the conflict.

Amid rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine in early 2022, Russia officially recognised the Luhansk and Donetsk people's republics on 21 February 2022.[7] Following that decision, on 22 February 2022, Russian president Vladimir Putin declared that the Minsk agreements "no longer existed", and that Ukraine, not Russia, was to blame for their collapse.[8] Russia then invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022.[9]

Following the arrest of a prolific criminal home invader, a Florida sheriff is encouraging residents to take gun safety courses and be prepared to stand their ground in the event of a break-in occurring at their own homes.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson told homeowners they are “more than welcome to shoot” at burglars as he announced the arrest of Brandon Harris, who Johnson described as being one of the “frequent flyers” breaking into local homes.

You aren’t just more than welcome to stand your ground, it’s actually preferred if you do, Johnson stated.


“If somebody’s breaking into your house, you’re more than welcome to shoot them in Santa Rosa County, and we prefer that you do actually.”

Shooting at criminal intruders doesn’t have to end with someone dying or even getting injured, as was the case with ending Harris’ crime spree. In this incident, a homeowner shot at Harris, spooking him and causing him to run to another house where he was eventually captured. However, the homeowner who fired the warning shot has refused to come forward, even to the police, despite their attempts to get in contact, likely because they fear they did something wrong.

But that’s not the case, according to Sheriff Johnson, who made his Wednesday remarks with the homeowner in mind. Before this latest string of break-ins, Harris had been arrested 17 times since the age of 13 and had been sent to prison for six-and-a-half years for home invasion.

Describing Harris, Johnson said:

“Some people just don’t learn. For us, he is job security. We deal with him all the time. Hopefully, this time he will go, and he won’t get out.”

In the end, Johnson praised the homeowner who scared Harris away with warning shots and even extended an invitation for them to attend local gun safety classes in order to brush up on their aim:

“We don’t know what homeowner shot at him.

I guess they think they did something wrong, which they did not.

Whoever that was, you’re not in trouble. Come see us. We have a gun safety class we put on every other Saturday, and if you take that, you’ll shoot a lot better, and hopefully, you’ll save the taxpayers money.”

Like many other Red States, Florida is a “stand your ground” state with laws that allow people to protect their homes – with force when needed.

“A person who is in a dwelling or residence in which the person has a right to be has no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground and use or threaten to use.”

No responsible gun owner ever wants to be put in the situation where they have to use lethal force to defend their home or their family from a criminal intruder, but, thankfully, in states like Florida, with sheriffs like Bob Johnson, law-abiding Americans can still stand up and protect themselves.

Liberal areas aren’t as lucky.

The Chinese government is attempting to block a viral video that showcases the impact of Shanghai’s five-week lockdown on citizens.

The six-minute video, titled The Voices of April, features audio of citizens highlighting the poor conditions the lockdown has caused, the lack of food, and no access to medical care.

The mostly black and white video contains images of Shanghai’s skyline. It ends with, “Get better soon, Shanghai.”

In an increasingly rare scenario, the censorship has caused a backlash on China’s social media, with more people, in their desperation, speaking out against the censorship.


Shanghai’s 25 million citizens have been locked down in their homes for weeks while officials try to contain a coronavirus wave.

“We haven’t eaten for days now,” one person says in the video.

“This virus can’t kill us. Starvation can,” says another.

This week, censors in China began to remove the video. However, citizens are working hard to overcome the censorship, sharing new copies and new versions, and even creating QR codes that link to the video.

The maker of the viral video about the lockdown has asked internet users to stop sharing the video because he is worried that the video has been taken out of context. The video sparked a rare show of defiance and protest of the harsh lockdown in Shanghai.

The creator of the video, who goes by the pseudonym Strawberry Fields Forever, said that he did not expect the video to go viral, and was moved by the messages he received from other internet users.

“However, I don’t wish this video to be distributed in the directions I don’t want,” he added. “I hope everyone stops sharing, or please asking people you know to stop sharing.”

Instead of easing the lockdown, Shanghai announced that it would strengthen it, despite acts of defiance like the video going viral.
