I think most Christians miss the point when it comes to the Lord’s commandments. I think it goes like this:

The Lord recognized that we would get ourselves into trouble if we did certain things. Therefore he told us not to do those things. These are called commandments.

Most people seem to either reject the commandments, or they think that they will spend an eternity in heaven or hell based on their compliance to the commandments. But no, I just think the Lord wants us to stay out of trouble. They give us a path to follow.

The ten commandments show man their guilt and sin and show man that his only hope and salvation is to turn to God and accept God's grace and forgiveness bought for us by Jesus on the cross.

I think it's much more than that. The Lords people are righteous:

Matthew 25:45
45“Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 46“These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

And for them that keep the commandments:

John 14:21
“He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.”

The Ten Commandments are of the Old Covenant. They had to be kept with a carnal, sinful, unsaved flesh called the carnal nature that proved to be in opposition to these Laws.

The difference between the Old and New Covenants is that in the New, the deeper laws of God that the Ten Commandments were based on, but could never make us righteous, are written on the conscience of a born again, Spirit filled new nature. Those who are actually born again of God naturally keep the laws of God, so are no longer in opposition to God's laws, and therefore there is no further need for the laws for them. Only those still in the carnal nature are under the law, but those who walk by the Spirit are therefore not under the law.

This is why in Galatians 5:16-21, verse 17 is not the Holy Spirit as has been taught and even translated, but the mind of the carnal person who knows the Ten Commandments, but still has to keep them with their carnal nature causing that struggle. It is the same as Romans 7:25.

Yes, the "path" given is the Way of God which Jesus states simply here:

"Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." Matt 22:37-40

Yes, and other commandments, such as the Ten Commandments, clarify these two.
