Luke 21:22-23
22 For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.
23
But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people.
KJV

That, "But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days!" is a warning Lord Jesus gave with events about the very END of this world. To understand it requires that we 'think' about why He said that, and where in Bible Scripture He was giving that idea from. Some will think, "Jesus was just talking about the hardships upon women pregnant with child during that time of great tribulation, that's all, it's simple."

Well the matter is simple, but it involves more than just hard times upon pregnant women in that time.

In that last phrase above of verse 23, Lord Jesus said there would be "wrath upon this people", meaning those 'with child'. That word "wrath" is the same Greek word used for GOD's WRATH on the last day of this world (See NT:3709).

I can believe hardship upon those during the "great tribulation", but WRATH? Why would Lord Jesus use that "wrath" idea upon them?

It is because Lord Jesus was pointing to a much, much more serious matter than simply about a women being pregnant with child.

Luke 23:27-30
27 And there followed Him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented Him.
28 But Jesus turning unto them said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for Me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.
29
For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, 'Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.'
30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us'; and to the hills, 'Cover us.' "
KJV

Those phrases for the mountains to "Fall on us", and for the hills to "Cover us", are markers of SHAME. We were shown about those on the 6th Seal in of Revelation 6 when the time of God's cup of WRATH had come...

Rev 6:15-17
15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16
And said to the mountains and rocks, "Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him That sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17 For the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?"
KJV

That is about the "days of vengeance" of Luke 21:22 for the end of this world, NOT... the 70 A.D. destruction of Jerusalem by the Roman army.

Jesus also quoted that idea of those who will wish for the mountains to "Fall on us", and for the hills to "Cover us" in Luke 23:27-31 when He was on His way to be crucified, and the "Daughters of Jerusalem" were weeping for Him.

Luke 23:28-30
28 But Jesus turning unto them said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for Me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.
29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which
they shall say, 'Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.'
30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us'; and to the hills, 'Cover us'."
KJV

Where did Jesus get that, "Blessed are the barren, ..." idea from? He was quoting that from Isaiah 54 from His parable of the barren woman whose womb never bare.

Apostle Paul also used that Isaiah 54 barren woman idea in 2 Corinthians 11 when he said he wished to present us to our True Husband Lord Jesus "as a chaste virgin". Paul feared that we would instead follow the "another Jesus" which others preach instead. That "another Jesus" is put for the coming final Antichrist at the END of this world!

Thus in Christ's Olivet discourse, He was not just pointing out how terrible the great tribulation time will be upon pregnant women. He was pointing out how His coming WRATH on the day of His return will be upon those "with child", because it means they did not WAIT on Him to come, but fell away instead to that "another Jesus", i.e., the Antichrist at the END, also known as the pseudo-Christ our "spurious Messiah" (per Dr. James Strong in his Strong's Exhaustive Concordance).

Next, the Explanation of this "Blessed are the barren,.." parable of Isaiah 54.

Jesus quoted this parable about "Blessed are the barren, ..." to the "Daughters of Jerusalem" that wept for Him on His way up to be crucified (Luke 23:27-31). He said the day would come when they... would say that, "Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck."

Jesus was pointing to their deception on the day of His future return. Those "Daughters of Jerusalem" will be quoting that, "Blessed are the barren," about themselves, but about the 'faithful' of Christ's Church that WAIT... for Him, instead of falling away to the coming Antichrist/false Messiah that comes first.

Thus that Luke 23:27-30 Scripture is about the END of this world when Lord Jesus returns, NOT 70 A.D.

Bear with me, because understanding this parable in Isaiah 54 means paying attention to it carefully...

Isa 54:1
1
Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD.

The idea of a woman being 'barren' means her womb is not with child.

Per the above, it's the barren womb without child that is told to "Sing..., break forth into singing, and cry aloud,...". What's that about? Wouldn't a woman that discovers she is pregnant be overjoyed and happy in the normal sense?? Yes, child bearing is a gift and a blessing from God. But this parable is treating being barren and without child, as a blessing, and to Sing for joy for being barren! What's up with that?

Just by that idea so far given in that parable, we should well know that God is showing us something deeper than about simple childbirth. That above even declares that the barren or desolate woman will have MORE children than the married wife! What's up with that?

By that, we are to understand that God is giving us a 'parable' only. And He is using the idea of a woman's womb and being with child as a metaphor for something else. That something else is the idea of TRUE WORSHIP vs. FALSE WORSHIP.

Barren woman = Faithful waiting on Jesus Christ to come, and like Paul said, presented to Christ "as a chaste virgin". (Realize that a virgin means her womb is still barren, NOT with child).

Married woman = NOT faithful waiting on Jesus Christ to come, but instead found ALREADY MARRIED to another (Paul's "another Jesus" of 2 Corinthians 11). And she is found WITH CHILD, and NOT as "a chaste virgin" waiting for her True Husband Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 54:2-8
2 Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes;

3 For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited.

That is the idea of the Barren woman having more children (eventually) than the Married wife, in the parable. This parable includes the idea of Jerusalem, not only Christ's Church.

4 Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more.

5
For thy Maker is thine Husband; the LORD of hosts is His name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall He be called.

Paul quoted the above underlined part in that 2 Corinthians 11 chapter about the chaste virgin, and Christ Jesus as our True Husband. (One could say this is yet another Biblical proof that Jesus is GOD).

6 For the LORD hath called thee as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when thou wast refused, saith thy God.

7 For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee.

8 In a little wrath I hid My face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer.
KJV

Something to notice especially, is this "Blessed are the barren" parable is given in conjunction with the future time of Christ's coming to gather His Church! And that Jerusalem is included in this!

So when you read that "Woe to those with child..." in Christ's Olivet discourse, He is not simply pointing to pregnant women in hardship during the coming "great tribulation" time, but also about the DECEIVED who do NOT wait on Christ's future return, but instead symbolically marry the Antichrist instead! And thus when Jesus appears, those are found "with child", having played the harlot! That is what all this parable implies, as parables, metaphors, allegories, etc.., can contain a whole lot of information that requires time to explain fully.
