"Adam called his wife's name Eve" Genesis 3:20

Now Eve signifies "Life" or "Living."

On what basis could Adam give this name to Eve?

@TheHC @Keiw @Aunty Jane @Mark51

What happened in Genesis 3 which gave Adam the confidence to name Eve - Life or Living?

Is there an element of hope within the name, and if so, show from Genesis 3 your understanding?

Hint: what events happened leading up to this name?

In searching the Scripture "if faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things unseen", what did Eve have faith in and what did she hope for?

Further to this consideration of Eve, Adam said "Because she was the mother of all living"

If you believe this is literally true, can it be figurative?

Can Eve represent something far greater than herself?

If so, what?

@Aunty Jane in a recent post you mentioned the answer unknowingly!

What was God's response to Adam naming Eve?

What did God do?

In Adam, naming Eve life or living what did God do which reveal something to Adam & Eve?

@Aunty Jane - think really hard about what the record is teaching you Jane!

Think about the significance of "Life"

Enjoy

The hearing of the Covenant of promise in Genesis 3:15 had such an impact on Adam he was compelled to name his wife Eve "Life"

The covenant of promise - (God provides a way to overcome sin's dominion in the earth)

And I will put hostility between you and the woman and between your offspring and her offspring; her offspring will attack your head, and you will attack her offspring’s heel.”

The Judgement

3:16 To the woman he said, “I will greatly increase your labor pains; with pain you will give birth to children. You will want to control your husband, but he will dominate you.” 3:17 But to Adam he said, “Because you obeyed your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ cursed is the ground thanks to you; in painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. 3:18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, but you will eat the grain of the field. 3:19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat food until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you will return.”

The naming of Eve

The man named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. Ge 3:15–20.

What impresses me with this record is how Adam after hearing the terrible existence they would now endure doesn't ask questions about tilling the ground, or childbirth but in acceptance proceeds to name his wife.

Verses 16-19 is a lot to digest and represents a significant change to their existence, but what do you do when many trials come into your life?

My brothers and sisters, consider it nothing but joy when you fall into all sorts of trials, 1:3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. Jas 1:2–3.

He clung to Genesis 3:15 knowing death and suffering would not be their or mankinds end but a redeemer will live.

We cling to hope and Adam naming her Life (Eve) revealed he understood the convenant of promise and trusted in God's Promise to redeem them.

How wonderfully is the Word written!

What I find amazing is Adam's comprehension of Genesis 3:15 and how he anchors his hope in his wife, by naming her "LIFE" which is the meaning of Eve. He knows a redeemer will come from her line, a single seed of the woman!

Such was Eve's hope, she thought Seth may have been that promised seed!

And Adam had marital relations with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son. She named him Seth, saying, “God has given me another child in place of Abel because Cain killed him.” Ge 4:25.

The meaning of Seth is "appointed by God"

Mankind would need to wait a long time before the promised seed would come from her line.

Lets go forward in time to when the angels are busy in the affairs of men!

to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, a descendant of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary Lk 1:26–27.

"To a virgin” - It would be the end of the “Barren ones”, so many who had gone before her. Now the real “Seed of the woman” of Gen 3:15 cmp Gal 4:4 “Come to be of a woman”.

And of what house would this seed of the woman come?

“House of David” - So of necessity was Mary Luke 1:19, Rom 1:3, Heb 7:14

The Christ (seed singluar) would be known as the Son of David after the Flesh...why?

Read carefully!

And I will put hostility (enmity) between you (Serpent) and the woman and between your offspring and her offspring; her offspring will attack your head, and you will attack her offspring’s heel.” Gen 3:15

Angels don't have offspring which is why the symbol of this literal animal would be known as those who share in his carnal thinking after the flesh!

But I wonder if you can see how the structure of the covenant speaks to this crushing of the serpents head?

Read carefully....

And I will put hostility (enmity) between you (Serpent) and the woman (Christ) and between your (Serpent) offspring and her (Christ) offspring; her (Christ) offspring will attack your head, and you (Serpent) will attack her offspring’s heel.”

Can you see it @Keiw @Aunty Jane @TheHC @Mark51

Are you able to see into the Mind of God to discover what He is going to do!

Look at the structure of the Covenant!

What was the issue?
What had entered the world?
How does the structure of this Covenant reveal God's intentions?

Its all there is you read it carefully - does the colour help?

There was something in Genesis 3:15 which gave Adam the confidence to name Eve "Life".

The lesson is about understanding what was lost in Eden and how it would be gained.
