You are correct, @Marymog. I never could understand the anti-Catholic attacks on Peter's primacy. They'd get much more traction challenging the succession rather than the origin of that primacy.1. YOUR history of "Popes didn't exist unti 600AD" doesn't match up with actual history: Pope Siricius (d. 398) seems so to use it (Ep. vi in P.L., XIII, 1164), and Ennodius of Pavia (d. 473) employs it still more clearly in this sense in a letter to Pope Symmachus (P.L., LXIII, 69).
