What is the purpose of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit?

Maybe baptism in the Holy Spirit, isn’t the same as being Born Of The Spirit.

I think baptism can be done through an anointed preacher.

Whereas Born Of The Spirit is an act of God..where our spirit is permanently indwelled by Gods Living Witness, His Living Holy Spirit.....because it’s been birthed by the Living Holy Spirit ....not by the laying on Of hands.that a preacher does.

Hence only the Spirit can give birth to our spirit , just as Gods word says.

Flesh gives birth to flesh.

Spirit gives birth to spirit.

Just the first step in the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
- What's the next step?
- Why couldn't the indwelling come first?
- Why isn't the indwelling a singular thing?
- What is the purpose of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit?
- Were John the Baptist and Jesus talking about the indwelling when they spoke about the Baptism with the Spirit?

  • Matthew 3:11
“I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I,
whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

  • Mark 1:8

  • Luke 3:16
John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come,
the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Why did Peter and John have to lay hands on them? Why couldn't Stephen do it?
Was the baptism of the Holy Spirit only given by certain people?
That's a good question.
They were formative times. I think they took this problem to the top. (the Apostles)
I don't think laying on of hands was required previously. And not always afterward.

The Holy Spirit can be rather unpredictable in this regard.
- At Pentecost it seemed to come automatically with water baptism. (3,000 water baptized)
- In Samaria it didn't come automatically with water baptism. The Apostles laid hands on them.
- Ananias laid hands on Saul. Then he was water baptized. (note: Ananias was not an Apostle)
- At the house of Cornelius the Spirit fell while Peter was still preaching. Then the gentiles were water baptized.
- In Ephesus the Apostle Paul water baptized the disciples of Apollos in Jesus' name and then laid hands on them.

The laying on of hands has continued as a regular practice today as a subsequent experience.
But some receive the Spirit spontaneously. I love those testimonies. - LOL

Indeed, yet there is also scripture saying how we must be Born Again....

1 Peter 1:23King James Version (KJV) being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

The word of God is Also Alive and Active.

Hebrews 4:12
Audio Cross Study Comm Greek
Verse (Click for Chapter)
New International Version
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart

John 3

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus

1 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.
2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”
3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again. ”
4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.
6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’
8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

1 Peter 1
Berean Standard BiblePar ▾
A Greeting from Peter
(2 Peter 1:1–2)
1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,
To the elect who are exiles of the Dispersion throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, chosena 2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood:
Grace and peace be yours in abundance.
A Living Hope
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy He has given us new birthb into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, reserved in heaven for you, 5who through faith are shielded by God’s power for the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
6In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in various trials 7so that the proven character of your faith—more precious than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
8Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9now that you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
10Concerning this salvation, the prophets who foretold the grace to come to you searched and investigated carefully, 11trying to determine the time and setting to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.
12It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, when they foretold the things now announced by those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.
A Call to Holiness
(Hebrews 12:14–17)
13Therefore prepare your minds for action.c Be sober-minded. Set your hope fully on the grace to be given you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14As obedient children, do not conform to the passions of your former ignorance. 15But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, 16for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”d
17Since you call on a Father who judges each one’s work impartially, conduct yourselves in reverent fear during your stay as foreigners. 18For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life you inherited from your forefathers, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or spot. 20He was known before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in the last times for your sake.
21Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him; and so your faith and hope are in God.
The Enduring Word
(Isaiah 40:6–8)
22Since you have purified your souls by obedience to the truth so that you have a genuine love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from a pure heart.e 23For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 24For,
“All flesh is like grass,
and all its glory like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25but the word of the Lord stands forever.”f
And this is the word that was proclaimed to you.

In a previous topic I asked a question about...

Here are the facts:
1) Those in Samaria were believers (had accepted the word of God)
2) They had received baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus. (water baptism)
3) But the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them. (had not yet "come on" any of them?)
4) Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. (prayed for them)

Why hadn't the baptized believers in Samaria received the Holy Spirit?
They were water baptized believers in the Lord Jesus.

- There was evidence that they were believers. (as stated in the text)
- There was evidence that they had been water baptized. (as stated in the text)
- There was, however, no evidence that they had received the Holy Spirit. (as stated in the text)

What evidence were the Apostles looking for?
"Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit." - Acts 8:17 NIV
("When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit," - vs 15)
This text doesn't tell us. We'll have to look elsewhere.

Let me restate...
I do not question whether the believers in Samaria had received the "indwelling" Spirit when they believed.
They were missing something else. That something else is the Baptism with the Holy Spirit. (the Spirit "on" them)

[

There is a whole lot of supposition in the above post - what there is not in the above post is 'The actual seeking of our Lord Jesus Christ for the answers'?

And that is the answer to the above post!!!!

If indeed a person has asked Jesus Christ into their life it is because they need Him - which is to say they need answers from God!!!!
And Jesus Christ is the Word of God - the One who has that answer they seek!!
Jesus, when honestly sought, sends His Holy Spirit with His words to speak to our spirit!!

Therefore the indwelling the His Holy Spirit comes from the desire to hear from Jesus Christ (The Word of God)!@!!

Rev 3:19,20 ‘Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent.
‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.

See?? Him coming into you - "indwelling" of the Holy Spirit does not come from being dunked in water or saying you receive Jesus Christ, it comes from wanting to hear from Him, and that comes after the repenting and the wanting the reproof and discipleship from Him, The Teacher!!!

Therefore the proof that a person "(had accepted the word of God)" is in the hearing of the Word of God - Jesus Christ via His Holy Spirit!!

And if we go and look at who is "born again' we find that Jesus explained this:

Jn 3:7,8 “Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
“The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

If you are born again - have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit - "you hear the sound" of the wind (The Holy Spirit)!! And He speaks in words, though to the new believer Him speaking in words is not easy to comprehend. A new baby does not understand the wind/words that come out of our mouth when we first speak to them, though some understanding about the love we have for them quickly starts to be understood!

Jn 6:63 “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.

And this hearing from our Teacher should bring us closer to Him, and cause us to ask all our important questions to Him, yet some do not practice hearing Him - so they stay dull of hearing.

Heb 5:11 Concerning him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.

Heb 5: 13,14 For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant.
But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.

RitaJanice has a very good understanding of this so she wrote:

We know this by Gods Living testimony who is the Holy Spirit..he testifies with our spirit all day every day that we are the spiritual children of God...we know of God in our spirit, when it becomes Born Again = by supernatural divine heart revelation...

The above quote is exactly right!! We know we are born again because the Holy Spirit personally testifies with our spirit, and indeed every day called Today, that "we know God in our spirit", and that indeed happens when we are born again (actually receive Him into our life)! It is indeed a "divine heart revelation" - and so if you want to know if someone actually does have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, you are looking for evidence that they seek Jesus Christ to hear from Him! Which is to say they understand what Ritajanice posted.

So why did
St SteVen write: "I do not question whether the believers in Samaria had received the "indwelling" Spirit when they believed.
They were missing something else. That something else is the Baptism with the Holy Spirit. (the Spirit "on" them)" ???

If they indeed received the "indwelling" of the Holy Spirit then they received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit - which is to say they heard the sound of the wind. They heard in their spirit which is in them, what the Holy Spirit spoke to them in their heart/spirit. The Spirit does not speak to that organ in us that is called our heart but to our spirit, right? So we hear the sound of the wind. Yet can we not reject Him speaking to us? But if rejecting Him, then not receiving Him!

So, because of His great patience the Lord continues to knock that door of our heart. Those who let Him into their lives receive Him, hear from Him via His Holy Spirit, have the "supernatural divine heart revelation", as Ritajanice puts it. So they continue to seek Him on that day called Today. They ask Him questions like put forth in the OP and listen to His answers, right?

Right on the button...

Like Jesus was indwelled by the Spirit at conception and empowered upon at baptism.

In fact this was the way JB was to identify Messiah - the one upon the Spirit would come upon AND REMAIN UPON.

What is the purpose of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit?

* Baptism of the Holy Spirit IS:
Gods Spirit Dwelling “WITH” AND “IN” =
“WITHIN” (opposed to ONLY WITH / Or WITHOUT) the BODY of A HUMAN man (Whose human bodily LIFE (BLOOD), IS physically Living.)

* The PURPOSE, IS;
Assuredness; Guarantee; Absolution;
* BY The True Word OF
God, (JESUS)
* THROUGH The Power OF God (CHRIST])
* God will NEVER Leave that man…
AND
*That man will NEVER Leave God.

It is a parallel…of a man And a woman Vowing “by” their Word and Promise to Wed, be Faithful, and Remain Married and Faithful, so long as they are Bodily Alive.

With Gods Power…It’s the Moment an individual man IS assured of Knowing “his” own Destiny, IS WITH God Forever and God WITH him Forever.

Glory to God,
Taken

I sincerely believe that the Baptism in/with/by the Holy Spirit is the indwelling Holy Spirit.
The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is related to justification. It occurs at the moment of faith in Christ for salvation/justification. What happens is the Holy Spirit places the new believer into the Body of Christ.

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is related to sanctification. It occurs when the believer has confessed his sin, he is in fellowship with Christ and the indwelling Holy Spirit assists the believer in the Christian Way of Life. As Jesus prayed, Sanctify them by your Truth, your word is truth.

The whole point of the topic was that the writers said that the water baptized Samaritan believers did NOT receive the Holy Spirit.
The question is, what did that mean? We both know that they had the indwelling because they were believers.
So what were they missing? The Apostles were called to lay hands on them and THEN they received the Holy Spirit.
What evidence were the Apostles looking for?

Further explanation at the topic. (since you didn't bother to read it)

Especially Jesus. He is referring to the outpouring at Pentecost.
Much more than an indwelling going on there.

The Baptism with the Holy Spirit is not in conflict with being born again.
Being Baptised in the Holy Spirit is not the same as being Born Of The Spirit
It's not one or the other, it's both.
What do you mean it’s both....?

Scripture does not say that we are Baptised once, then we are Born Again, that makes no sense...
Being Born Again comes by whose testimony?

Spirit gives birth to spirit...so, how would I know that the Spirit gave birth to my spirit having never read a Bible?

If one has been birthed by the Spirit, Christ Spirit has birthed our spirit, our spirit is permanently in Christ, it can NEVER be un- birthed....it’s a Living spirit birth....same as a flesh birth, one ever Born , I couldn’t go back into my mothers womb could I?

Being Baptised in the Spirit, I do not believe is the same as being birthed by the Living Holy Spirit.

Who said that they are in conflict with each other?

I said that they are the same .

All this to say that you don't believe in the Baptism with the Spirit?
I said that I have NO understanding of being Baptised with the Spirit, do you actually read my posts, I’ve explained it enough times to you.
Or at least not as a subsequent experience after the indwelling which comes when we believe?
I was/ have never been baptised with the Spirit, my spirit is Born Again/ regenerated, my spirit is Alive in Christ.....not my knowledge of scripture or quoting scripture, none of that makes one spirit Born Again.

As the Holy Spirit was coming through my body and taking up permanent residence in my spirit, he testifies with our spirit that we are Gods children, his Spirit is pure and Holy , my spirit recognised his Spirit testifying with my spirit straight away....Gods Love overwhelmed my spirit/ heart...when it became Born Again over 33 yrs ago.for me it was a “ mind blowing “. Living Spirit rebirth...that God revealed himself to this insignificant being....you never forget your spirit birth, as the Spirit testifies who you are in Christ 24/7.

As for belief...I was brought to believe initially in Jesus in my head by God....I was gifted supernatural faith to know God/ Jesus in my spirit/ heart...by God, hence one must be Born Of the Spirit to know God....we know God by His Living Witness/ testimony.

God is a Spirit, a Born Again communicates with God once their spirit has been brought Alive...when it’s been birthed...Spirit gives birth to spirit.

I have no understanding of being baptised in the Spirit.....only that my spirit is Born Again = by Living supernatural divine heart revelation.

There is one spiritual birth, not 2 ...( not saying you said that).

What ever you experienced was entirely different to what I experienced, I have no idea what you believe it means to be Born Again...however it was for you, then that’s your own testimony, same as mine is my testimony, my testimony comes from the Holy Spirit all day every day and has done for the last 33 yrs..my testimony doesn’t come from scripture..

Scripture backs up my testimony....I needed to be Born Again in my spirit by the testimony of the Living Holy Spirit, how could I possibly know God , without him giving birth to my spirit? once that happened, then the Bible confirms and talks all about God’s Living testimony, the Living Holy Spirit.

We are spirit children of God once we have been permanently birthed, you can’t ever free yourself from being Born Of The Spirit, one knows imo 100% in their spirit that it has been birthed, which I’ve explained countless times...

We were chosen and predestined all according to God’s purpose and plan....we are his spirit vessels to be used by the Holy Spirit, he is the one who conforms us into Jesus image, he is the fruit bearer in us....from the moment we are Born Again we start growing in spirit knowledge,/Gods knowledge.

What happens when we are Born Of the flesh, what knowledge do we start growing in?

Another way I have just been brought to understand Baptism in the Spirit is.

Once we are Born Again, God brought me to do his will in a certain area..I believe I was then Baptised or given power / authority by him, to carry out what he showed / led me to do, by his power./ authority.......as and when God chooses to baptise us in the Spirit/ by giving us power and authority in his name.......my mission like Jesus was done under God’s authority and his power through us, is what gets his will done..
Spirit baptism is not continual indwelling, Spirit baptism is Gods authority/ power given to us on certain occasions to carry out the plan that God has intended for our lives.
To be Baptised in the Spirit.....it means to be under the authority and power of the Holy Spirit, one must be Born Again for that to happen.

Baptism in the Spirit is not a permanent indwelling........we are Baptised with Gods power and authority to do his will....once our spirit has been regenerated.

“When he says, 'You will be baptized with the Holy Spirit,' he means you will receive extraordinary power for Christ-exalting ministry.” Third, Luke describes being baptized with the Spirit as receiving power for witness (Acts 1:8).

The Ascension
(Mark 16:19–20; Luke 24:50–53)

6So when they came together, they asked Him, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”

7Jesus replied, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

9After He had said this, they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight. 10They were looking intently into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.”

The Baptism with the Holy Spirit is not in conflict with being born again.
Being Baptised in the Holy Spirit is not the same as being Born Of The Spirit
Agree.

It's not one or the other, it's both.
What do you mean it’s both....?

Scripture does not say that we are Baptised once, then we are Born Again, that makes no sense...
Right. Born again comes first. (usually)
As I have said already. The Baptism with the Holy Spirit is a subsequent experience.

The house of Cornelius (Acts 10) raises some interesting questions.
We can't really put the Holy Spirit in a box. He is very unpredictable.

At the house of Cornelius, Peter was still preaching when the listeners began speaking in tongues and praising God.
Hard to determine at what point they were born again. It all seemed to come at once.
Notice that verse 44 says that the Holy Spirit came ON them. (not in initially)

Acts 10:44-48 NIV
While Peter was still speaking these words,
the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.
45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter
were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit
had been poured out even on Gentiles.
46 For they heard them speaking in tongues[a] and praising God.
Then Peter said,
47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water.
They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”
48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.
Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.

All this to say that you don't believe in the Baptism with the Spirit?
I said that I have NO understanding of being Baptised with the Spirit, do you actually read my posts, I’ve explained it enough times to you.
I was responding to Karl Peters, not you.

Do you have good news about your health condition?

Or at least not as a subsequent experience after the indwelling which comes when we believe?
I was/ have never been baptised with the Spirit, my spirit is Born Again/ regenerated, my spirit is Alive in Christ.....not my knowledge of scripture or quoting scripture, none of that makes one spirit Born Again.
You said that you speak in tongues. That is evidence of Holy Spirit baptism.

Here's one of my topics on the subject, if that helps. Or, you may prefer to be pig-headed about it. (as you wish)
