Iraq no longer exists as a unified entity. Every major news and political source agrees with this assessment. Major portions of the country are no longer in control of the US established government in Baghdad.newlife said:It is inconceivable as I see it that the United States will permit large sectors of Iraq to fall under the control of the ISIL, a radical Islamic insurgency. A US aircraft carrier has already moved into the Persian Gulf and I anticipate airstrikes to follow with very limited American casualties if any. The question is whether the US will commit to indefinitely prop up a government whose soldiers won't fight despite numerical and weapons superiority. It remains to be seen if this will be similar to the failure of Nixon's Vietnamization and the collapse of the South Vietnamese government. The US is much more capable then it was in the 1970's to project power, which it has been doing against insurgencies in Africa and Yemen, but will it have the resolve and and tenacity to do so in Iraq which has become a quagmire which defies an easy or quick solution. Closely connected is also the war in Syria which is also a quagmire which defies an obvious or easy solution.
ISIL, like al Qaeda before it, was created by US and its partners in the region. The entire structure of what's happening is very complex.
It's as though the western participants in the Levant struggle are infected with some sort of schizophrenia, some sort of double-think.
Consider that the US created ISIL, continues to support it, but now fights against it.
Consider that the major funding for ISIL comes from the Gulf states, which also fight against it.
Consider that the US sends mixed signals to Iran - supporting anti-Shiite forces while seeking their aid in fighting them.
Consider that the US sends mixed signals to Israel - saying it supports Israel while it snubs its leadership.
Bottom line is that there is no consistent foreign policy with regard to the US activity in the middle east EXCEPT partnership in oil production and distribution.
There is no simple explanation as to what is going on except possibly the design of continued, sustained military action and aggression throughout the world.
This is a pattern of a fascist state, which the US has become and may be the best reason for our involvement there.
and that's just me, hollering from the choir loft...
