I'm privy but not because I'm close to Rome. I happen to have priests as friends...4 that I could think of off-hand.
We got a new priest at the parish here this year because one of those friends of mine retired. I don't know him very well yet...he's a young guy, about 35 or so.
I just want to make clear that I don't define as Catholic because I can't accept some of their doctrine.
The 2 priests that know this don't care....I think they care more about the life one lives.

Calabria is beautiful and has beautiful beaches and sparkling blue water.
You SHOULD make a trip someday...it's just not easy to do due to the distance.

It seems the grass is always greener on the other side. I grew up in NYC, in a very nice area of Queens, but I was born here.
Italians are going through tough times right now due to the policies of the Europ Union. I don't think they're too happy right now.
They also tend to be atheists. I teach Catechism in the CC...5th grade and up to the 7th grade (second year of middle school). By the time they're in the 7th grade,,,,more than half have become atheist. It's a real problem here. I think everywhere.
I think it's worse than mezzo e mezzo...
I wish something would change....we discuss this a lot but no one knows the solution.
There are no Protestant denominations near me and, anyway, I'm becoming disillusioned with the many denominations of Protestantism.
It's a mess wherever you turn.
So turn to God and be faithful to HIM!
Kids go off, want to figure it out themselves, not listen to their parents and then get 17- 20 think they know it all. I had catechism starting in 3rd grade, my communion and confirmation in 5th and I did not have a clue, nor was interested either. I didn't become a Christian til I was 35. God has a plan and in due time peiole on His list ( His Sheep) will be saved. Atheists only account for 10%. My Dad was a professed atheist all his life, but I think he was more angry at God for not answering his prayer to save his Dad's life when he was 10 years old. God said no, so he stopped believing. But in his 80's he came full circle, turned to God before death ... my Mom was a rebel too, then days before her death, she received hrist and believed. God is sovereign so, don 't worry.
Yeah, I was brought up in Bridgeport, Ct. - not too far from Queens. Now talk about lost souls, NYC is filled with them. It takes two twin towers to topple for God to get their attention!

Right on all....I agree.
I'm just happy that in the end your parents came to be believers...what a relief this must be for you.
