10) For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
"They chastened us after their own pleasure", that is, they chastened us as seemed good to them. This reflects on the intention of our parents, flawwed though they were. They attempted to correct us as they thought would be good. Intention.

"But He for our profit", that is, the chastening from God isn't about His intention, naturally He has the best intention, "but He for our profit" is results. God's chastening isn't simply what He thinks good (it is), it's what works. And this gives us the possibility of being partakers of His holiness, that we wouldn't have otherwise. He gets us back on track.

So He can say, "All things work together for good", "If you've been raised with Him . . . you shall appear with Him", "now we are the children of God . . . when we see Him we will be like Him", "our citizenship is in heaven . . . from where we look for Jesus . . . who shall transform the bodies of our humiliation, to become like unto His glorious body", many promises to us.

All these are saying, If this is true of you now, that will be true of you then. And here again, no wiggle room. Plainly stated truth. And it all harmonizes across the Scriptures.

Much love!

Lets get this straight @marks, you say that man can choose whether to accept Christ or not, but once he has, he is unable to turn away and disbelieve in God again. So he loses his free will when he is saved?

All I know is what the Bible says.

1 Peter 1:3-5 KJV
3) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4) To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
5) Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Faith is God's power in you, keeping you "unto salvation". You must escape from God's keeping power if you wish to leave your salvation.

Ephesians 4:29-30 KJV
29) Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
30) And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

You are owned by God, Who has put His seal of ownship on you, to protect His interest until the day comes that He collects His purchased possession. Will you undo His claim of ownship over you, successfully violating His seal?

Would you in fact undo your unity with Christ in His death and resurrection? Undo spiritual baptism into Jesus?

Romans 6:3-7 KJV
3) Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4) Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5) For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6) Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7) For he that is dead is freed from sin.

The expectation that we will in fact become like Jesus that causes us to purify ourselves . . .

1 John 3:1-3 KJV
1) Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2) Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3) And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

Should I continue?

Do you foresee yourself choosing to no longer believe in God? To no longer be a new creation? Are you actually able to make those kinds of choices?

Much love!

Kept by the power of God unto salvation is talking about those who are aiming for salvation, not in it yet, and speaks of the wonderful way that the Lord works as we are going through the terrible trials in the wilderness, whereby we are indeed at risk of losing our faith as the fires of hell are poured down to bring us down into the dust on the ground. Indeed He does give us sustaining power to sustain us till we come to salvation from sin in His glorious kingdom.I

Once we are in the saved from sin state it is possible for us and highly likely we will 'go in and out of it till we are established as pillars in the temple.

Not sure where you get the idea from that l contemplate leaving?

Do His goals not include walking in this life without sin?

Er yeah! We know God rejects sinful behavior.

If we walk sincerely with the Lord then we would NOT be knowing doing sin at all.

Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

..... and come to PAUL's Theology, instead

Actually we are called to follow Jesus Christ... no Paul or anybody else.

It's Jesus' teaching that came thru the biblical writers.

Calvin is a devil, and his theology is a doctrine of devils. Hebrews 13:9

So, if you believe that you can lose your salvation, then that means you do not Trust in Christ to keep you saved.

OSAS is doctrines of devils... lots of warnings in the New Testament warning that Christians can in fact lose their salvation

You don't understand this concept because you are fleshy and this is spiritual.

Yep, the OSAS peoples must deny and ignore portions of scripture to hold their false OSAS position

1 Corinthians 2:14
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

You just told us that the only reason you believe you can stay saved is if YOU dont let yourself depart from Jesus.

You need to quit rejecting John 15 among others.

God crated man in His Own Image, therefore man has free will and as such man has the ability to not abide IN Christ

You canal religious people that only accept bits and pieces of God's Word are teaching heresy. That ends badly bubba.

The early Christians were all free will.

Exactly. OSAS was not taught under the heretic Augustine came on the scene

He was a tool of the devil and used to twist scripture and bring forth gnostic garbage which is what most churches teach now.

Kept by the power of God unto salvation is talking about those who are aiming for salvation, not in it yet,
I would have to disagree with you on this. That doesn't go along with the reading of the passage.

God is keeping us unto salvation by His power. Can you go against His power? But that's academic. Because you won't try to. Before you'd even get close to such a state (it doesn't exist, this state where you've 'lost' salvation as though it were a possession) God has promised - promised - to take effective means to return you to partaking His holiness. Can you defeat God's promise? You don't even want to!

God has birthed us again (anagennesas - "up-generated") to a living hope (certain expectation according to our faith) of our inheritance, you have an inheritance reserved for you by the God Who knows the end from the beginning. It does not fade away. If you do not claim it where will it go? It does not fade away. But of course you will be there to receive your inheritance, God is guarding you.

I truly do not see any wiggle room in this passage, or the others I've posted.

Much love!

Thanks for providing the opportunity for me to look in depth at this portion of scripture. I have somehow missed it until now. As a Calvinist in the past, I was OSAS, of course, but can't remember using these verses. Perhaps I did, but now I think there is more to them than is found in the commentaries and ECF writings on the subject are evading me.

But in return as I study, I would like you to say what you think of this text, which is one of about 80 that say salvation can be lost:

2 Peter 2:20-22. It says, “For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: ‘A dog returns to his own vomit,’ and, ‘a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.’”

One contention I have is the phrase 'born again'. We read in John 3:6, Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of the Spirit. This indicates to me that Jesus is speaking of two birth's of the same kind, or of the same realm, not one of the flesh and one of the Spirit. If the second birth was of a new realm, it would just be spiritual birth and not rebirth, as He was speaking of the flesh. This birth is the one that is incorruptible, and undefiled or entirely sanctified and not in the next life.

Peter was writing to persecuted believers to encourage them with this great and mighty hope for those who had not yet been delivered from the presence of sin in this life which is the inheritance of all saints but just because one has an inheritance in store, does not mean that they will without doubt receive it. In some families, it has been known to be denied to them by siblings.

More thoughts later as I am going through:

We are saved from sin and death. We are saved from the penalty of sin, and from the power of sin, and from the corruption of sin. It's a big question, with lots that can be answered.

We are saved into life and liberty and love.

Please feel from to ask for details, I'm not sure what direction you are going here, but I like the question.

Much love!

Noone is "walking in the Spirit" when they believe that "walking in the Spirit" is what keeps them saved, or not. @Hepzibah

Thats "flesh". that thinking is the "mind of the Flesh"..

= "here is what I HAVE TO DO"... "Im trusting in ME"...

And that's "broken faith".

Here is real faith, which is to walk in the Spirit of correct faith.

"The Same JESUS who saved me, keeps me SAVED".
I can see what you're saying, and for the most part, I agree. I think people get hung up in their theologies and think it has to be one or the other. But you both have relevant pieces of the puzzle. @Behold and @Hepzibah

The more I study this out, the more I see that walking after the Spirit (faith in Christ) is opposite of walking in the flesh (the law).

Galatians 3:1-7
[1]O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
[2]This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
[3]Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
[4]Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.
[5]He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
[6]Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
[7]Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

We really need to be careful and consider if we are in the faith and not trusting in our own good works to save us. I don't want to be among the ones who stand before Him saying, "Lord, I did all these things in Your name... I kept the commandments, I cast out devils, healed the sick...." ...and He will say to them, "Depart from Me, you worker of iniquity, for I never KNEW you." Faith in self rather than faith in Christ and His finished work on the cross is a dangerous thing.

When I stand before Him, it will be the blood of the Lamb that He sees .... HE is WORTHY ...and by His blood, I am made worthy.

which is one of about 80 that say salvation can be lost:
There are more than that, I think, which people use to support this idea that rebirth may be temporary. For several years I was in the practice of searching for people's lists of Scriptures that they presented to support an impermanent salvation. I would take each and every one, and give it a full examination. The thing is, I became Christian in the first place because I value truth. And that has never changed.

I've not found a single passage that makes such a statement. And in fact I've found several through doing this which actually speak strongly the other way.

In this passage,

2 Peter 2:1-22 KJV
1) But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2) And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
3) And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
4) For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;
5) And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
6) And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;
7) And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:
8) (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)
9) The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:
10) But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
11) Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord.
12) But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;
13) And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;
14) Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:
15) Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;
16) But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the madness of the prophet.
17) These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.
18) For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
19) While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.

Is this a passage of salvation lost? These are not being described as the redeemed. They walk after the flesh, as natural brute beasts,

20) For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
21) For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
22) But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

Verse 20 causes the most consternation, however, this speaks of a personal who has had a moral reformation having learned about Jesus, but nothing here speaks of the person being reborn, or a child of God, or redeemed, sealed, saved, recreated, regenerated, or any of these terms the Bible uses to specifically identify a child of God.

Is this salvation lost? Or is it what Peter says . . . the sow returns to the wallow. It's nature was not changed, it's still a sow, clean it up all you want, it's still a sow, it returns to it's wallow.

How is it now worse off for them? "I tried the "Jesus thing", it didn't work." My friend Sandy said that. How horrible!

There is a another passage,

Hebrews 10:26-31 KJV
26) For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
27) But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
28) He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
29) Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
30) For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.
31) It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

"After we have received the knowledge of the truth" is not equal to saying "after we have been regenerated". "there remains 'no more' sacrifice", this is saying, the series of sacrifices ends when you learn about Jesus. "No more" refers to the end of a series of things.

We can look at each and every one of these 80 you have in mind. Many say I explain them away. I say I hold to their exact wording, and find no contradiction.

And again there are those passages which don't allow that salvation may be lost.

Much love!

Amen to that! Me too.

marks, think about it, which doctrine is more likely to be a demonic one: that you are saved whatever you do afterwards, or that obedience is necessary or you are in danger? Which one does Satan like best and fools people over? What is to be lost if a believer thinks that obedience is vital? What is to be gained if he thinks that everything is okay, I cannot fall?
3) And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
4) For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

No marks they are not the lost, they are sinners whatever their religious profession is. They are servants of corruption because they have put Christ back on the cross.
20) For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.

Much love!

marks, this is a tough one for me, because I have never put up an apologetic case on this subject but now see that it is extremely important that I do because it is the most dangerous of doctrines around.

I believed in OSAS without any doubts for about 10 years till I found that it had come from cherry picking. It is impossible for me to have been enlightened then go backwards. It was not a change of doctrine it was a change of a whole theological system. Finding out that the early church did not teach it just about sealed it.

I asked you about salvation because I am having trouble working out which theological system you adhere to but then, so many here have mixed up a load of them with a little Calvinism added in but you have to have the whole system and not just a couple of points..

There is a good thread going atm on this subject and I am going to read it to get prepared though I have probably heard all of the texts they are quoting. But I will let the masters educate me.

In the meantime, have you watched this video? I really wish you would.

Ditto.

I'm thinking if we are to proceed on this topic that it should be the examination of particular passage in a search for what they do and do not say.

This passage, to me, is clearly stated. The sow returns to it's wallow, and the sinner returns to their sin. In neither case was the nature changed. Both retain their original nature. This is not a passage telling about the possible fate of the regenerate. If it were, how could John write, that being God's children, when we see Him we will be like Him? Doesn't your view require that you add a condition not given in the passage? We will be like Him, if we do, if we don't, if we something? We will be like Him when we see Him.

Here is another. This was very interesting to me, it seems to speak clearly, in the English translation, that salvation is conditional on performance:

Hebrews 3:14 KJV
For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;

Doesn't it sound that way?

"We have become" is in the Perfect tense, an action completed with enduring result. People read this passage and consider the condition "if we hold our confidence to the end" as determining whether we "remain" partakers of Christ, however, that's not what the verse says. "If we hold our confidence to the end" is what determines whether we "have become partakers of Christ".

The plain saying to this passage is, If you've become a partaker of Christ, you will hold your confidence to the end. If you do not hold your confidence to the end, it means you did not become a partaker of Christ. Do you see the distinction?

Here is a passage which many read and fear they may not be good enough to be saved, or may not stay good enough. But the reality is that it presupposes a permament salvation which if you have received, you will hold on to the end, but if you haven't, you won't.

Which agrees exactly with John, "If they were of us they would have remained".

Much love!

@marks I think that the reason I have not been training myself on the OSAS issue, is that I no longer agree about when a person is saved as in evangelicalism.

I say that a person is saved when he is delivered from sin, not positionally but actually. Then he is walking in the Spirit but he can fall from that position of ES.

I don't consider that I've trained myself or anything like that, only that I've studied this a deeply as I can for many years. I used to comb through the internet to find people's lists of verses where they say it's taught you can lose rebirth. I've never found one that says that. And many that say you don't.

Even when people's lists used the same verses, I looked at them all again. And again. And again.

@ lizbeth puts this as "already and not yet", I like that wording, I think it describes some of what is in the Bible.

Romans 6:5-14 KJV
5) For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6) Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7) For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8) Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
9) Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
10) For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11) Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
12) Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13) Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
14) For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

In this passage, being baptized into Christ crucifies us with Him. Now we are dead with Christ, and being dead, are freed from sin. So we are to reckon ourselves from from sin . . . why? Why "reckon"? Because we don't see it right away in the outer man.

Being dead in Christ, and therefore free from sin, dead indeed to sin, but alive to God through Jesus Christ our Lord, we are then admonished to not let sin rule us (as though it could, and might), to not yield our members to sin (as though we could, and might), but instead to yield ourselves to God as those alive from among the dead ones (because we can, and we are).

Again, the main key to this passage is whether or not you are baptized into Christ's death and burial.

Paul identifies his audience that way here:

Colossians 3:1-4 KJV
1) If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2) Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
3) For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
4) When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

"IF you be risen with Christ", if that is you, it means, "for you are dead". And if this is you, it means, "then shall ye also appear with Him in glory."

Having made that promise - yes, promise - he goes on to say,

Colossians 3:5-7 KJV
5) Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
6) For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
7) In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

Salvation is to be immersed into Jesus in His death and burial, which if this is you, you will, you shall, God's promise, appear with Jesus in glory.

So that being the case, what does the apostle write? Put to death your body parts that are on the earth, and he goes on to list various sins, evil character.

This is all saying, If you've been baptized into Jesus, you've died with Him, risen with Him, and will appear with Him, so stop sinning. These are the plain sayings of these passages. Do you agree that this is what they say? If not, what do they say? Please be specific, it's the best way for both of us to learn.

Much love!

Yes, there are a Multitude of "cherry-picked" Passages:
