The Story of St. Valentine
The Roman Emperor Claudius II was fighting many wars. He wanted a
strong army, but many men did not want to be soldiers. Claudius thought
the men wanted to stay home to be with their wives and children instead
of leaving to fight wars.
Claudius thought of an awful solution to his problem. He decided to cancel
all marriages! No one in all of Rome could get married. Claudius thought
that if the men couldn’t get married, the men would ignore the women
and want to be soldiers.
Valentine, who was a priest, believed that people needed to get married.
He thought that if they were not married, they would be tempted to sin by
living together without being married. So he secretly and illegally married
couples anyway! He performed the weddings in secret places, so the
Roman soldiers would not find out.
But they did find out. Valentine was arrested and brought before the
Emperor. The Emperor thought Valentine was a well spoken and wise
young man, and encouraged him to stop being a Christian and become a
loyal Roman. Valentine would not deny his beliefs, and he refused. He was
sent to prison until he could be executed. While he was in prison, he sent
out letters to his friends and asked to be prayed for by writing Remember
your Valentine.
Valentine was killed on the 14th or the 24th of February in the year 269 or
270. We celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th in honor of St. Valentine.

Where did you find this. Because its not consistent with any records about the possible three people that could be Valentine.

On all counts they were killed because of their belief in Jesus.

GW Cox suggested Valentine is from Wayland/Volund. OJB suggested he is from Vali.
Many "Saints" are partly/from pagan figures.

I dislike Valentines day being in 40s and still single/alone.

I just realised that St Valentine could be from emperor Valentinian &/or Valens exactly 100 years later. Roman Emperors were worshipped as gods.

timeline:
marcus aurelius 169-180 (a persecution in 177)
marcus aurelius claudius ii , st valentine 269/270.
10yrs persecution diocletian 303-313 [= the 10 days in revelation]
valentinian/valens 364-385, eusebius.

Well, I am single, but I made the best of it. I have 3 daughters so I used that day to make them feel special. I hand delivered flowers to each of them at school! :) Other than that, it's just another day on the calendar.

I meant i am single and have always been. Having 3 daughters means you weren't. Typical of christians to not care.
I never said I didn't care. If I may, where does your discontent come from? There is something rooted deeper. :( My friend, I share compassion for you. Why is your faith so small when even faith as small as a mustard seed can be enough... My friend, why do you doubt? Do you feel as though God has abandoned you? Please tell me. I am being sincere.

Where do you see "valentines" day in the Bible? Hint..it's not there.. Jesus said follow the commandments of God and NOT the traditions of man!
I don't know why, but I'm going to entertain this. The point of posting the story was to point out that he was essentially killed for believing in Christ. I want to say more, but I feel I'm being cautioned to keep quiet. This isn't worth getting an admin visit on here.

If the story is true, I salute the man. The holiday with pagan tones as well as the mere suggestion of a calandar dictating to me to be loving to my wife appauls me.

Okay, I get the pagan thing. It upsets everyone. I was pointing out that, at the very least, I would take the opportunity to do something for my daughters. They are too young to know the difference in a pagan holiday. All they know at this point is that their dad took time to say I love you in front of their entire class at school. As far as I can tell, that's just being a good father. As for the wife, thing, yeah, not an issue. :)
