The Purpose of the Commandments

There are certain things that we can do that will get us into trouble. For instance, if I rob a bank, I'll probably go to prison for a long time. Therefore, God told us not to steal. He gave us other commandments that are also meant to keep us out of trouble.

When we understand that we are breaking the commandments then we know that we have turned away from God and are doing what is right in our own eyes. It is when we have turned away from God that we have to decide whether or not we will humble ourselves and repent of our primary sin of turning our back on God and acting like God.

Essentially the commandments reveal something about God to us.
They tell us about his character, that he cares about us, otherwise why give us commands that will, in theory, enable us to please him.
They tell us that he is Holy, loving and just.
That he is also strict, no push over or sugar daddy is he.

They tell us he is merciful by his provision of sacrifices for sins.

I've scratched the surface of what God's laws tell us about God, you read them and think about what can be learnt about God from them.

Paul says in (Rom. 7:7,12) (v.7) What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, THOU SHALT NOT COVET.

Paul asked a question, is the law sin? He said God forbid, he said the only way that he knew what sin was, was by the law.

(v.12) Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. Why in the world would a Christian want to do away with something that God said is holy.

Paul says in (Rom. 4:15) Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. If there is no law there is no sin.

People we must realize everybody has laws by which we must operate by, the governments have laws, your job have laws, your card games have laws, even the boy scouts have laws. But now you are going to try and convince yourselves that the creator of the world has no laws by which we must live.

Also Paul says in (Rom. 5:13) (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. If there is no law, there is no sin!

I think you misunderstood him. He is saying that many Christians claim the law is no longer relevant, and nailed to the cross. This is not his view, but the view of many. He is saying that if such was true, then we can do as we please without sin, because without the law there is no transgression. He is speaking hypothetically.

Yes I made an error, although the verses spoke the word and point I was trying to make.
