My son and family flew back to Norfolk Island on Thursday, as the "high winds" and rains had passed so that the planes could land once more there. The mountainous land mass of NZ has blocked the movement of the low-pressure system from moving past NZ and so the weather patterns stalled for a time before the Low-pressure system dissipated, losing it strength.
Hurricanes are very similar to the Cyclones that Australia experiences in the tropics.
