What was the good fight Paul fought? He fought against the old man knowledge. The old way of thinking, the false identity. For example; when God was trying to move Israel out of law into grace. Paul had to fight that. With his own brethren he fought against it. It was Christians of his day that had been born again, and wanted to bring with them - what they knew. Which was law. Heathenism on one hand with a certain group or nation, and with the Jews it was pure law that Paul would fight. Think about Paul's calling, called by God to carry a message, a gospel into the world. That message would not fit a theology. It fits the human being - but not a theology. So you see what Paul endured for the gospel.

23 And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him:
24 But their laying await was known of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him.
25 Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket.
26 And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple. - Acts 9:23-26.
Many knew him as the one that killed Christians, he had to fight against not being accepted. As who he said he was - preacher of the new grace gospel. As Jesus was confronted for who he said he was - so it was with Paul. And one that would preach the message of gospel. Bringing new knowledge to humanity. You will go against that as in a playing field - the old knowledge of what people think they are. Whom do men say that I am Jesus said. Old identity does not want to die. Death had reigned by one, and now a new life would reign by one. Even Jesus Christ!
