Are tariffs a good thing? Usually yes, but it can depend on how they are used.
General information….
At one time we had tariffs and no income tax. The government operated off of tariffs.
Tariffs have been used since the beginning of United States.
The early intellectuals of the United States and Europe supported tariffs.
As a whole other countries use tariffs against the United States unfairly.
Today tariffs can augment government funding. But….but because tariffs have a tendency to be temporary it is not something we want to depend on for government funding.
Tariffs can be used as a bargaining chip.
Tariffs are a form of economic protectionism.
Tariffs can be used to protect a particular product.
Tariffs can perswade companies to produce their product in the United States and this can mean a lot of jobs.
Tariffs have been used during a depression or recession but they have never caused a depression or recession.
