I like these. I think I will soon, but I might want to wait a little bit.

I had a lot of deliveries recently and I just ordered two 8 long foot garden beds for planting small vegetables.

Now I'm afraid the delivery man will be mad.

Have you ever thought about starting a thread, regarding your garden beds, ?

Are they raised beds?

I would love to watch you and mr Duck putting them together, telling us what you have planted, then taking us through the process of their growth....I love watching stuff like that.

I grew tomatoes one year, I loved watching them grow....I had a problem with rats though, they loved eating them....the rats had made a nest under my decking... I think they nested there, because I fed the birds, they had a constant flow of food...I’ve stopped feeding the birds for that reason, haven’t seen a rat ,since I stopped feeding the birds.

Just as a bit of advice....

Don't store them on a computer's hard drive. Store them on a flash drive or memory card.

Computers die, and subsequently your recipies can die with them..
Let me modify that advice to store them on the hard drive, but always back up any important files regularly. And make sure you know where your back up drive is. Those things get lost easily.

I think so! They are raised beds and these ones are only a foot deep, so they won't be good for too many things, but we can use them for radishes and carrots. Radishes grow in a month so they are the peak of instant gratification. Lol

I am going to have a lot to learn myself, but I will see about starting a thread when we get started. Might be fun to do.

I've heard bird feeders that aren't raised cause people a lot of problems.

Whenever I get my hands on an organic ham hock, I put filtered water in the pan, add the hock, chopped onions, celery, carrots and a tied muslin bag with dried yellow split peas bring it to the boil and simmer for 1-1.5 hours.

When it is cooked, the split peas when removed, are called peas pudding in the north, and are very nice with salad or in sandwiches with the cooked ham. Some can be added back to the water and there you have split pea soup, with bits of the ham added.

We are having beef hand pies tonight.

These are essentially the same things as pot pies except a LOT more meat and less gravy. So you can carry them around, pack them in a lunch, or whatever.
Like a baked sandwich with pastry instead of bread.
Once upon a time these were sold on the streets of Britain from carts....in Poland they are referred to as Perogies. (The potato type are more of a modern version)

Very savory and highly seasoned they are a great walking around type food....better than the ever popular corn dog or smoked turkey leg. Also more nutritionally balanced as they contain vegetables. They can contain cheese as well as the meat and be a "Cumberland pie" .

When I sold these in my bakery there were people who were literally addicted to them. They would buy some for the weekend when they wouldn't be near enough to buy their lunch.
I wasn't displeased by that fact.

Next time I'm on my PC I'll send you a recipe for bean soup.
BEAN SOUP ( As promised:)

INGREDIENTS:
3 tins beans
1 tin chickpeas
1 med onion finely chopped ( I use frozen ready chopped )
2oz butter and a splash of oil
4 or 5 med carrots
2 or 3 Celery sticks chopped
2 pints vegetable stock
1x14oz can chopped tomatoes
1 med courgette ( I don't use this but it's in the original recipe )
2 teaspoons Worcester sauce
2 tablespoons tomato puree
Salt and pepper
Garlic clove or garlic paste to taste (optional)

METHOD:
Melt the butter with the oil in a large pan ( I use my pressure cooker )
Add onions and chopped carrots.
Cook with lid on for 2 mins
Add garlic and cook 1 min
Add tomatoes and stock
Bring to the boil and simmer for 20mins
Add Worcester sauce and tomato puree and cook for 5mins
Strain and add all beans and chick peas.
Bring to the boil and simmer for about an hour.

I serve it with flavoured croutons or garlic bread,

The original recipe calls for dried pulses to be soaked separately over night and then cooked till right consistency, but I find it easier and less messy to used cans.

What sort of beans do you use @Pearl ?

Hope it’s not butter beans, as I don’t like them. Definitely not butter beans! Usually three of these plus chick peas. 1740148333220.png1740148366355.png1740148577615.png1740148617571.png1740148650609.png1740148804015.png
But you can use any that you like.

Does anybody have a recipe for iced sweet tea? I keep reading about it in my American novels but never had it.

Thank for that but the only things we measure in gallons over here is buckets and watering cans. And at one time petrol. My largest drinks container holds about a litre - 2 pints - but i do have an 8 pint/gallon watering can. sml

That's funny in different countries. I am wearing my 10-gallon cowboy hat right now. It's not 10 gallons, but that's the type of it. What if I just told you I'm wearing a 10-gallon hat.:csm

I made some sweet tea - about a pint - using two Earl Grey teabags and four spoon of sugar. I served it over ice and it was quite nice but needs tweaking - maybe more teabags and more sugar. I try again. I buy my milk in two pint - quart - containers so maybe next time I have an empty one I'll wash it out and use that.

Does you ten gallon hat not drown you? Why is it called that?

I was going to lurk but I didn't agree with some of the comments. Then I couldn't handle it.

You make a simple syrup first. It's one part water and one part can sugar. Heat in a pot and stir until the sugar dissolves.

Then you can add to your iced tea according to your preference. Usually maybe 5-6 bags for a pitcher because the ice will melt down.

If you want a hint of roasted flavor leave the tea out in the sun in a glass pitcher for a a couple of hours before adding ice.

Simple syrup makes the difference between coffee shop quality and ... Not great made at home tea.
