This always ticks off the overly masculine, but while Song of Solomon deals in the erotic, it also deals as a precursor to our relationship with Jesus. What does that say about the intimacy of the relationship we are to have with Jesus, eh?

However, in terms of theology and the relationship of the part to the whole, I don't think many people have answers. Song of Solomon is kinda' that 800lb gorilla in the room because it makes people uncomfortable. You don't see many signs and promos for Song of Solomon sermons. ;)

FWIW, my personal opinion is that God created sex for our enjoyment and procreation - and the Song of Solomon recognizes that. Unfortunately, because of culture (church and secular), we just seem to talk about it (sex) in all the wrong ways.

Yes that's true. Before the fall Sex was meant for Man and Woman, Husband and wife....But now that the earth has fallen into sinful ways the true meaning of sex has been completeley distorted in the media, television, music and such and such....You know what i mean? I just thought it was kinda odd to see that in the bible lol :D

Well, the Bible contains a number of references that are, for lack of a better word, pretty crude.

There's Elijah who taunts the prophets of Ba'al asking if their god has turned aside to use the restroom. The Apostle Paul says all of his religious work as a Pharisee is counted as dung (the exact equivalent would be a certain four letter word). Translations tend to gloss over this as a result of the culture.

I mean Song of Solomon can make you downright uncomfortable reading through.

But yes, it's exactly as you've said; true Biblically-sanctioned sex is a good thing given by God. The problem is twofold. On one hand, we've (as in society) turned sex into a common thing that devalues the overall relationship. At the same time, we Christians have shut down for the most part ,not talking about, as it became the way to rebel against the world's perspective.

Solomon deprived himself nothing, and in the end he found it all?
vanity
vanity
vanity
a chasing after the wind

Though its in Ess the conclusion is

9 And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yes, he pondered and sought out and set in order many proverbs. 10 The Preacher sought to find acceptable words; and what was written was upright—words of truth. 11 The words of the wise are like goads, and the words of scholars[b] are like well-driven nails, given by one Shepherd. 12 And further, my son, be admonished by these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is wearisome to the flesh.
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:

Fear God and keep His commandments,
For this is man’s all.
14 For God will bring every work into judgment,
Including every secret thing,
Whether good or evil.

The Song of Solomon uses physical realities to explain spiritual intimacy. It's not about eroticism.

All of the writings of Solomon should be stapled shut and not payed any attention to. Solomon died in His sin and could not save himself from eternal judgement. Don't follow him or pay any attention to him. They should not be in the christian canon.
Read the writings of the witnesses of Christ they will lead you to the way of life.

Should we throw out the book of proverbs and the book of ecclaistes also?Solomon a man blessed with wisdom by God should be ignored?
If Solomon doesnt get into heaven, what do you think your fate will be?
" Judge lest not you be judged"

Song of Songs 7:3-4
Your breasts are like two fawns, twins of a gazelle. Your neck is like an ivory tower. Your eyes are the pools of Heshbon by the gate of Bath Rabbim. Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon looking toward Damascus.

I don't know how you would just take that spiritually.

The same way they justify saying Satan isn't real, just a spiritual allegory and the like... since it's uncomfortable it must mean something else ;) After all, the Bible is all about comfort and love and puppies and rainbows... isn't it???

I believe that it is two fold, physical and spiritual. Try reading it aloud with your wife sometime. We have never been able to complete it.

If I think back and try to visualize or walk in the shoes of history, the puritans come to mind, even some things I have heard and read about in not so distant history.
Intimacy was rather frowned on. To the point of being considered sinful. There is some that teach today that sex or intimacy has a singular function, procreation.
I disagree, there is more going on here than simple preservation of a species. Certain birds have fascinated me, that even in the animal kingdom there is a bond an intimacy an unbroken union that last a lifetime. Its as amazing as a bird that migrates to the tundra from Hawaii, the mother and father leave the chicks behind and fly back to the Island, but a couple weeks latter these new borns take to the air and follow a path they have never journeyed, straight to Hawaii.

What the book does indicate is that God has provided an appropriate out let for a very real and powerful desire.
All animal flesh following the blessing to multiply Gen 1:22
In the 39th chapter of Job we see God commenting on the animal kingdom and who is it that watches over them. Job 39:1-3

Men and Women being made in the image of God are considerably more complex, but this book Solomon wrote, If you will rather parallels Job 39.
In it describing the complex intimacy of two becoming one.
Similar to the complex and still mysterious behavior "knowledge" of some animals.

Maybe we should do the same with Psalms, David stumbled
Or Moses as well, he did disobey and strike the rock rather than speaking to it.
How about we only have one tribe of Jacob, Joseph, after all his brothers did forsake him.
Just where will we draw the line.

Mary K Baxter saw Solomon in Heaven.........I Believe her story out of the others.
I don't...

Joh 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

Joh 13:33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.

1Co 15:23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

1 Corinthians 2:9-10 (NKJV): But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
