The Sabbath as a Sign of the Covenant

Beyond being a commandment, the Sabbath is also a sign of the covenant between God and His people. Ezekiel 20:12 declares,

"Moreover I also gave them My Sabbaths, to be a sign between them and Me, that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them."
(Ezekiel 20:12)

"And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God". (Ezekiel 20:20)

The Sabbath was given as a distinguishing mark, a visible sign that set apart those who followed the true God. It was not simply about resting from work but about sanctification, being made holy by the Lord. By keeping the Sabbath, God's people testified that He alone was their God and that it was He who made them Holy.

In Ezekiel 20:20, God reinforces this message: "Hallow My Sabbaths, and they will be a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God." The command to "hallow" the Sabbath means to treat it as sacred, honoring it as God intended. Those who kept the Sabbath demonstrated their allegiance to the Lord, setting themselves apart from the surrounding nations. The Sabbath served as a continual sign of the relationship between God and His people, a covenantal bond that declared their identity as those sanctified by Him.

This aspect of sanctification is crucial. Holiness is not something people achieve by their own efforts but something granted by God. Observing the Sabbath is a declaration of trust, acknowledging that it is God who sanctifies, provides, and sustains. It is an outward sign of an inward reality—of belonging to Him and being transformed by His presence.
The Sabbath, therefore, is not just a day of rest but a day of recognition, a testimony that God's people are set apart by His grace.

The Sabbath IS for All
Some argue that the Sabbath was only for Israel, but Scripture makes it clear that it was given to all humanity. Since it was established at creation before Israel even existed, it was meant for all people. In Isaiah 56:6-7, God extends His promise beyond Israel:

"Also the sons of the foreigner who join themselves to the Lord, to serve Him, and to love the name of the Lord, to be His servants, everyone who keeps from defiling the Sabbath, and holds fast My covenant, Even them I will bring to My Holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer."
(Isaiah 56:6-7)

This passage reveals that the Sabbath was not limited to one nation but was open to anyone who chose to follow the Lord. It was a universal sign of commitment to the Creator, not an ethnic or national distinction.
This idea is further reinforced in Exodus:
"One law shall be for the native-born and for the stranger who dwells among you."
(Exodus 12:49)

The law of God, including the Sabbath, applied equally to all who followed Him, whether they were Israelites or foreigners. This clearly shows that the Sabbath was never meant to be an exclusive institution but one that welcomed all who sought to worship the true God.
It is Important to note that the Sabbath is not only for the past but will continue into the future. In Isaiah 66:22-23, God declares;
"For as the new heavens and the new earth which I will make shall remain before Me… from one Sabbath to another, all flesh shall come to worship before Me."( Isaiah 66:22-23)
This prophecy shows that the Sabbath is eternal, continuing even in the new creation. If it is to be observed in the new heavens and the new earth, then it is clear that the Sabbath was never abolished or intended only for a specific people. Instead, it remains a central part of worship for all who acknowledge God as their Creator and Redeemer.
The Sabbath is much more than a simple day of rest, it is a sign of true worship. It reminds all people that God is their Creator, the one who sanctifies them, and the one they are to serve. Keeping the Sabbath is an act of faith, a commitment to aligning one’s life with God’s will. It is a testimony of trust in His provision and an acknowledgement of His authority over time and history. As Ecclesiastes 12:13 states;
"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all."(Ecclesiastes 12:13)

The Sabbath is part of this calling, a sign of devotion to the Lord and a continual reminder that those who keep it belong to Him.

What about the 10 commandments jack have you forgotten, and do not tell me it was for Israel only I can easily disprove this with scripture.

From Exodus 20:8-11:
"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it."

From Deuteronomy 5:12-15:
"Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

In the NT, Jesus and Paul taught the commandments, both of them followed the sabbath.

so you know Jack, the 10 commandment are defined as being the Covenant, it is why the tablets of stone were placed in the Ark of the Covenant. now Jeremiah 31:31-34 defines thus new covenant so does Paul as he quotes from Jeremiah also here it is written, the word of GOD; Listen!;

from Jeremiah 31:31-34 in the New King James Version (NKJV), : "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.

it requires no interpretation. It is clear that the covenant is still the 10 commandments internalized on our hearts and minds, do you believe this? Jesus explained this, he magnified the Law.

now my question is why do I have to teach you this if you are under the new covenant?
Can't find a Sabbath command in the NT? That's because there ain't none!

The Acts of the Apostles is the second book attributed to Luke, I believe written about 80-90 A.D., we now come to one of the most frequently quoted verses of Paul to support the false teaching of the sacredness of Sunday: (Acts: 20: 7) And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. Now let’s take a close look at this verse and dissect it a little. Notice Paul continued his speech until midnight! It was after sunset, but prior to midnight. The first day of the week in biblical times did not begin at midnight, as men begin it today.

The Lord’s days begin and end at evening (sunset). (Gen. 1:5) And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first. All biblical days began and ended at sunset. Throughout the Roman world at that time, and for a few hundred years afterward, days began and ended at sunset. The practice of beginning the new day at midnight was started much later.

So this meeting, and Paul’s preaching, took place during the time that we now call Saturday night. Remember when dealing with the Lord’s days the evening comes first. If you read more than just that one verse you would see what actually happen. Paul’s companions were engaged in the labor of rowing and sailing a boat while Paul was preaching that Saturday night and early Sunday. They had set sail Saturday night, after the sabbath had ended. Paul remained behind for one more farewell sermon. Then at day break Sunday morning, Paul set afoot, walking from Tro’-as to As’-sos to meet the ship. So actually Paul left Sunday Morning, but this verse (Acts: 20:7) says nothing about a change of the Lord’s Holy Sabbath day. And the term “break bread” simply means to eat, so every time Paul ate he broke bread, search it out for your self, the bible tells you to; (1Thess. 5:21) Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

The keeping of Sunday as the Christian Sabbath is not of God but of Man. If you are a true Christian, which means a follower of Christ or to be Christ like; then why are you following a day set up by man? We have proved that Paul kept the Lord’s Sabbath well after the death and resurrection of Christ. So why are you going to church on the first day of the week? Well if you don’t know history will tell you why.

ORIGIN OF SUNDAY WORSHIP

Ample evidence from history shows that the celebration of Sunday originated from pagan practices of SUN WORSHIP. In March of 321 A.D., the Roman Emperor Constantine, who was at first a sun-worshiper and later a Christian convert, issued the first decree declaring Sunday to be a legal day of rest. In 336 A.D., the Roman Catholic Church officially changed the observance of Sabbath to Sunday for political and economic expediency. Since then, the original Sabbath gradually gave way to Sunday observance and the practice remains to this day.

Right back then the day started at dawn....not midnight.
Wrong….the first day of the week was Saturday? No! The first day of the week was Sunday, what Christians called the Lord’s Day.

The Saturday Jewish Sabbath has nothing to do with Christians.

Correct….the Lord’s Day is not in the scriptures but it is well defined by early Christian writings as with the condemnation of Christians keeping the Saturday Jewish Sabbath.

Which makes sense because Gentile-Christians were not allowed in the Temple and the Jewish-Christians pretty much died out after the Temple was destroyed in 70 AD.

I work every Sabbath when I have to give the sermon or visiting the sick and needy, is it a sin?

Of course not, need to understand what the Law is, it's loving God with all your heart and your fellowman. And if you truly love Him, you keep His Commandments which He wrote with His own finger. Otherwise you do not know Him and He will declare that at the end...
4th commandment:
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, But on the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your GOD
On it you shall not do any work
You, or your son, or your daughter
Your male servant, or your female servant
Or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates
For in six days the LORD made the heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them
And rested on the seventh day
Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy

Mark 3:
4. And He saith unto them,
Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.

Matthew 12:
11. And He said to them,
What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on Sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?
12. How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the Sabbath days.

10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them."

And that ain't good!

Apparently, the leaders of Israel took the Sabbath day to a whole new level and extreme observation, whilst burdened their own people.

In the Old Testament, only the Levite clan of priests, had their designated duties to perform in the Temple and not elsewhere.

They are the only 'clan/tribe' besides the 11, were not given a land to 'tilt' and receive 'earnings' from it.

But all the other 11 clans were given lands to 'tilt', 'herd' and 'so', according to their gifts to receive their individual earnings.

They were everyday out there in the field, and from their proceeds they traded with one another, and also with Gentiles.

(Because we also learn that the Jews have ceremonial cleansing by Law, when they become 'unclean' having interaction with Gentiles, eventually 'touching', even anything belonging to them.)

And, 'part' from all their earnings or 'more', they offer as 'offering to GOD' in the Temple.

Therefore only from these 'offerings' the Levites have their share as wages and earnings for themselves.

Now scripturally the saying of Jesus, 'Sabbath was made for man and not man was made for the Sabbath'.

On the other hand, is the Sabbath made for the Levite priests, who's duty remain in the Temple?

Just imagine all the priests stop their duties in the Temple and rested on the day of Sabbath.

There will be no sacrifices offered for the sins or other ceremonial according to the Law conducted for the nation on that day.

(When apparently redemption from sin for the Jews only last from the very end of the day to the next.)

Thus if the priests happen to rest on the day of Sabbath, then the nation of Israel will be under sin, curse and even death on that very day!

(That is why we also learn, sacrifices are offered in the Temple 'day' and 'night'.)

Therefore probably Sabbath was not applicable for the ordained priests of GOD assigned in the Temple.

Since only they alone conduct all the 'spiritual' duties in the Temple 'day' and 'night' (2Chronicles13:11), even 'housekeeping'.

But, rather Sabbath is applicable for the other 11 clans, who apparently worked their given lands, probably for 6 whole days.

And hence on the 7th day they all rested from their work, and there're some who spend their rest day in the Temple.

Either they 'watch' and 'be a part' of all the 'ceremonies' that takes place in the Temple.

Or, be taught or receive clarification for everything pertaining to the Law, from scribes cum lawyers who are likewise present.

Now, as for GOD, HE also rested after creating all of HIS creation and declaring them all 'very good'.

GOD is a SPIRIT and resides in a different 'dimension', who slumber not, nor sleep like man, that HE's not at watch of all HIS creation.

As according to Jesus who knows 'best', "My FATHER is always working, I too must work."

And come to think of it, what was Jesus' work on the very day when all of Israel were strictly observing Sabbath?

Shalom in the name of Jesus Christ
Please excuse me brethren, am directed to repost this now 'edited' copy once again, thank you.

Be 'blessed' in the name of Jesus Christ

We who are now in Christ have knowledge and wisdom.

GOD in Christ Jesus our Lord, made men and women who serve their earthly master as they would Christ. (Ephesians 6:5-8)

That on the seventh day, they may rest from their work.

And there's no justification that the 7th day must fall on Sunday, but it can fall on any other day.

Since some are called by their earthly masters to also work on the 7th day due to circumstances.

Therefore to do good and serve another fellow human being in need in any legit business on that day also is wise.

As one is also able to witness Christ like in them, to unbelievers, whether the respond is sweet or sour. (Matthew 5:10&11/13-16)

And to them who are unable to attend church on Sunday, pastors can form elders of the church team and conduct similar service.

Hence to conduct it in the house of those who are unable to attend the Sunday service, like a 'cell group'. (Matthew 18:20)

Now, as for the church, the Kingdom of GOD through Christ and His saints which is 'at hand', they operate 24/7. (John 5:17)

Remember the key word of GOD to keep the 'Sabbath', keep it 'Holy' and do 'GOD is good' on that day.

Jesus said, Who is My brother, sister and mother? They are those who obey GOD and do HIS will.

GOD did not bring forth good seasons and good produces only for the godly, but also for the ungodly.

Even servants in the Kingdom who are equipped and perfect for every good works according to All Scripture = Holy Bible.

They are to pray, guide and help those servants who are slow and behind in every good works. (John 13:16).

It's not surprising, GOD chose Apostle Stephen even to the simple duty of distributing rations to the needy.

GOD's choice and appointment in HIS Kingdom the church on earth, are All Scripture=Holy Bible 'quality servants' and not 'quantity servants' of outward reputation. (1Timothy3:1-13)

Shalom in the name of Lord Jesus Christ.

Yes, the Creator who made the Sabbath for man, doesn't matter....Need to think that through my brother...
We must obey His words and not what we think. Nowhere in the Holy Scriptures is the church commanded to keep the Sabbath!

God made it clear that Sabbath was a sign between God and Israel alone!

Once again you are free to keep the Sabbath if that is what your conscience before God requires, but to impose your conscience on others as a rule or law- is sin and idolatry.

Exodus 31:16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.
31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.

Israel alone was to keep the sabbath. The children of Israel were the ones commanded to keep the sabbath.

The sabbath is a perpetual covenant and a sign between God and Israel. The covenants pertain only to Israel.

[Rom 9:3-4 KJV] 3 For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: 4 Who are Israelites; to whom [pertaineth] the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service [of God], and the promises;

Gentiles were strangers (not born in Israel) from the covenants and were not given any covenant, especially the sabbath.

[Eph 2:11-12 KJV] 11 Wherefore remember, that ye [being] in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; 12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
In Ephesians 2:12-19, Gentiles were at one time separated from Christ, alienated from Israel and the covenants of promise, and without hope and without God in this world, which is all in accordance with Gentiles at one time not being doers of God's law, but through faith in Christ all of that is no longer true in that Gentiles are no longer strangers or aliens, but are fellow citizens of Israel along with the saints in the household of God, which is all in accordance with Gentiles becoming doers of God's law.

In 1 Peter 1:16, we are told to be holy for God is holy, which is a quote from Leviticus where God was giving instructions for how to do that, which includes keeping God's Sabbaths holy (Leviticus 19:2-3), so by following those instructions we are acting in accordance with God's holiness and the only way that we shouldn't follow those instructions would be of God were to cease to be holy. In 1 Peter 2:9-10, Gentiles are included as part of God's chosen people, a holy nation, a royal priesthood, and a treasure of God's own possession, which are terms used to describe Israel (Deuteronomy 7:6), so Gentiles also have the delight of getting to follow the instructions that God graciously gave to Israel for how to fulfill those roles. It would be contradictory for a Gentile to want to live as part of a holy nation while not wanting to be a follower of God's instructions for how to live as part of a holy nation.

In Jeremiah 31:31-33. the New Covenant was only made with the house of Judah and the house of Israel and it involves God putting His law in our minds and writing it on our hearts, so it is only through faith in Christ that Gentiles are able to become joined to Israel and partake of the New Covenant.

If you think that the things that the Sabbath is a sign of are true, then you should live in a way that testifies about their truth by keeping the Sabbath holy rather than a way that bears false witness against them.

Paul received the commandments from the risen Lord Jesus.
In John 15:10, Jesus used a parallel statement to equate his commandments with those of the Fathers, and in John 14:24, he said that his teachings were not his own, but that of the Father, so he did not teach his own set of commandments in disagreement with the Father. Jesus quoted three times from Deuteronomy in order to defeat the temptations of Satan, including saying that man shall not live by bread alone but by ever word that comes from the mouth of God, so he affirmed Deuteronomy and every word that comes from the mouth of God, which includes what God spoke in Deuteronomy 5:12-15 in regard to keeping the Sabbath holy and Deuteronomy 5:31-33 in regard to the rest of God's law.

[1Co 14:37 KJV] 37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

There is no commandment given to the church, the body of Christ to observe the sabbath.

Paul went into the synagogue on the sabbath. Paul was not observing the sabbath under the law, but rather, he was preaching Christ, reasoning with them out of the scriptures.

[Act 17:1-2 KJV] 1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews: 2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

[Act 18:4 KJV] 4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.
Paul had every appearance of continue to keep the Sabbath holy in obedience to God's commands in accordance with the example that Christ set for us to follow, but he was super secretly actually rebelling against God? Right...

The church is the commanded to repent from our sin in accordance with the Gospel of the Kingdom, and it is by God's law that we have knowledge of what sin is (Romans 3:20), which includes God's command to keep the Sabbath holy.

The church, the body of Christ, came together on the first day of the week, the day after the sabbath.

[Mat 28:1 KJV] 1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first [day] of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
The fact that they wanted Christ to be taken down from the cross before the Sabbath, that they avoided visiting his grace during the Sabbath, and that they were using the Sabbath as a frame of reference for when things happened shows that they were continuing to keep the Sabbath holy.

[Act 20:7 KJV] 7 And upon the first [day] of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
It is important to keep in mind that for Jews the day starts at sundown in accordance with the Creation account saying that it was evening and then it was morning. Jews also have a longstanding tradition of meeting on the 1st days of the week at sundown on Saturday night to mark the end of the Sabbath and the transition to the start of the work week. So Paul was not preaching from morning until midnight, but rather he was preaching from sundown until midnight, then left on Sunday morning to travel. So this does not establish that they were meeting on Sunday morning, and even if they were this does not establish that this was the start of a new tradition, and even if it was, it does not establish that they were hypocritically setting aside God's command to keep the Sabbath holy in order to establish their own traditions, and even if they were this would not establish that we should follow their example of sin.

[Rev 14:6-7 KJV] 6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, 7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

This gospel will be preached to those on earth in the tribulation. Of course we shoiuld worship God. There is no mention here about the sabbath.

[1Jo 5:1-3 KJV] 1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

"By keeping the Sabbath holy, as He commanded us, we show our love for Him and give recognition of His authority in our life."
1 John is written to believing remnant of Israel who only had to believe on the name of Christ that he was Christ the Son of God (John 20:31)

And Christ Himself set for us the example...
Luke 4:16
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

Jesus was under the law we are not

We should worship God in spirit and truth...his word is truth. We should base our beliefs on his word.
In Matthew 4:15-23, Jesus began his ministry with the Gospel message to repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand, which was a light to the Gentiles, and God's law was how his audience knew what sin is (Romans 3:20), so repenting from our disobedience to it is a central part of the Gospel of the Kingdom, which includes repenting from breaking the Sabbath. God is sovereign, so we are all under God's law and are obligated to refrain from doing what God has revealed to be sin. In Ezekiel 36:26-27, the Spirit has the role of leading us to obey God's law and in Psalms 119:142, God's law is truth, so obedience to it is the way to worship God in spirit and in truth. God's word includes the command to keep the Sabbath holy so indeed we should base our beliefs on His word.

We become one new man where there is neither Jew or Gentile..........this says nothing of Gentiles keeping the law and in fact Galatians admonishes against it

1 Peter is written to the believing remnant of Israel.......we are not included as a chosen people, a holy nation, a priesthood

In Jeremiah 31:31-33. the New Covenant was only made with the house of Judah and the house of Israel and it involves God putting His law in our minds and writing it on our hearts, so it is only through faith in Christ that Gentiles are able to become joined to Israel and partake of the New Covenant.
where does Paul say we partake of the new covenant

[Deu 5:2 KJV] 2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.

God made covenant with Israel only which included the sabbath

Paul had every appearance of continue to keep the Sabbath holy in obedience to God's commands in accordance with the example that Christ set for us to follow, but he was super secretly actually rebelling against God? Right...
[Act 18:4 KJV] 4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.

Paul preached Christ in the synagogue
