1 Samuel 17
17 Now Jesse said to his son David, ‘Take this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp. 18 Take along these ten cheeses to the commander of their unit. See how your brothers are and bring back some assurance from them.
28 When Eliab, David’s eldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, ‘Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.’
29 ‘Now what have I done?’ said David. ‘Can’t I even speak?’
I was re-reading the biblical account of David and Goliath yesterday and it spoke to me of being in the right place at the right time.
Jesse's older sons were fighting the Philistines and Jesse sent his youngest son, the shepherd boy David, to take food and provisions to his brothers at the battle ground.
He arrived in time to hear Goliath issue his daily invitation for somebody from the Israelite lines to come and fight him and we all know what happened then.
It showed me that God had made sure that David was in the right place at the right time even though his brother challenged his right to be there and hurled abuse at him, even accusing David of abandoning his flock.
That sibling confrontation brought home to me the fact that even those close to us can't see God's plans for us and that we should ignore their negative attitudes when we have a work to do for God.
