I pray for the Gungors that the Lord will send people down their path who see Christianity from the perspective that the Lord has--and that they will lead them back into a faith that is in Jesus Christ and that does not put their trust in men and/or the established church.
I think that if you put your eyes on men you will be disappointed...but if you keep your eyes focused on Jesus Christ, you will be able to endure all of the things that hit you coming from organized religion and people who profess it.
Fact of the matter is, people are imperfect, sinners, and even Christians will treat you the wrong way if you are a leader in the church and don't measure up to their standard...
I can see how the Gungors might have been offended by this problem in the church.
Nevertheless Jesus said, "Blessed is he who is not offended in me." and also there is a verse in Psalm 119 that says that "those who love the law, nothing shall offend them."
This is not to say that the Gungors are not justified in their rejection of Jesus Christ. When offense comes from people in the church and you are a minister, it can be hard to not blame the Lord over the fact that "sheep bite".
I pray that the Lord will reach out to them...that He will leave the ninety-nine and go and reach out to this couple that has been offended by the behaviour of those who are Christian but who continue to be sinners. May they forgive the people who have offended them and may they return to a faith in Jesus that does not focus on the behaviour of man, expecting man to represent the Lord perfectly when man is sinful at heart.
If anything, their experience with coming to grips with the holocaust should make them want to search deeper into how this applies to the reality of a God who is good. When faced with challenges to our faith, those of us who really do love the Lord will seek to take those challenges head on and will ask the Lord to help us with those challenges so that doubt does not continue within us so that it might corrupt our faith.
In saying this I mean no disrespect to the Gungors; but I mean it as an exhortation for those who might struggle as they have in order that they might hold on to their faith rather than letting it go.
I believe that the Gungors are prodigals and that the Lord is going to reach out to them and make Himself real to them once again. He died for them and is grieved over the behaviour of the sheep that caused them to want to turn away.
I myself in recent days have felt that Christianity could be untrue because of the way that certain people who call themselves believers have behaved toward me. (If not for a very real experience with Him I might have lost sight of the fact of the reality of His presence in dealing with sinners who claim to know Him)
In my own life, I know that Jesus has revealed Himself to me in such a way that I cannot let Him go that easily. In keeping my eyes focused on Him rather than the treatment that is meted out to me by those who call themselves Christians, I have been able to keep the faith in spite of some horrible misrepresentation of the Lord by people who claim to be in the body of Christ.
