Some of those big 60s and 70s cars were almost evocative of aircraft carriers....

Wife and I with our 6 kids and 4 grandkids 14 years ago. Since then 9 more grandkids. 
This is not my image, but it's pretty much my old ride...
Had a boat-like aspect, yes. And it was a heavy monster.
When we got married in 1972 our first car was a white 1960 Chevrolet Impala. It had belonged to my boss's mother and was in beautiful condition.
when he sold it to me for a very low price.
We lived in an apartment in San Jose CA with no parking spaces for tenants. A drunk driver hit it, where we normally parked it on the street, solidly during the night, backing away and drove away to escape but crashed into another parked car around the corner disabling his own vehicle.
Because of its age our car, in spite of its immaculate condition, was uninsurable. The drunk driver had no insurance and no money. They called our Chevy totaled but it was built like a tank. I straightened out the damaged trunk with the car's own jack so that the trunk could be closed and locked. No other damage. The back end looked terrible, but we drove the car for many years after that without ever doing any other repairs. It was in that car that I taught my wife to drive so she could get her first driver's license.

Back then, it was a real accomplishment to total a Chevy. Everything was much stronger than it needed to be.
Yes, they had heavy steel bumpers. If we hit something like that with the Accord we drive today the Accord would be totaled but the Chevy would drive on...

I also drive an accord. Would rather drive that than a heavy aircraft carrier.
