Reminds me of my Dad's back yard kinda. He has ferns there, I used to play in them when I was a child. We have stinging nettles that cause itchy painful rashes when you brush up against them. Some of the ferns were said to have a natural remedy for that rash. The underside of the fern leaves provided some relief. Don't know if you have stinging nettles there?

"A common forest remedy that is said to relieve the irritation is to rub the nettle sting with the underside of a fern. The sori from fern leaves is said to help soothe the itch. Most commonly bracken fern and sword fern are the native ferns that are often associated with this method." Stinging Nettle

We do have stinging nettles here which is a weed. Some folk eat them in a stew like spinach. It can be dried and used as a herbal tea as well. I have not encountered any in the bush so far but that does not mean they are not there

Could be someones pet pigeon that got out and landed with you then?

It's a possibility.....however these pigeons aren't usually domesticated. They are extremely swift fliers, besides, there's been a development since yesterday afternoon.

The Bush in Broken Hill, Thames/Coromandel.

Looks like the Bush I used to play in the weekends. Mine was a little spookier and darker, and where I would grab an occasional banana passion fruit hanging down. Usually later for Dinner..

Well guy's ....here I have a visitor out of the blue. A Torres Strait Island pigeon. A wild animal. It flew onto my arm while I was at the beach three nights ago and had no objections coming home. I'm amazed to say the least! It sleeps in my cabin....even snuggling up to my head on the pillow....I can hear its heartbeat....which blows me out. There is however a downside; shitting in inconvenient places......buttttt, I guess if I want this bird's company, compromises will be needful.....any suggestions?
Ohhh, by the way, my two and a half year old grand daughter has named him/her 'Red'......that was out of left field!

Beautiful bird. Chances are that it was someone elses pet bird and flew away. Thats why it was comfortable in approaching you.
I found a pigeon once that had flown over 100kms. The poor thing was so hungry and thirsty id never seen a bird skull water like he did. Pigeons are one of the few birds that can skull water like that. Lucky it had a ring on its leg with a phone number on it so i called the owner to come and get it.

If you want to find its owner then take a picture of it and put it up in your local shops.
If you want to keep it and you've never owned a bird then congratulations on finding your new friend. Birds are awesome pets, i love them, their great with kids as well

Bird poop. Ok. I hear ya. First get it a cage, a home for it to go to when it wants to rest, eat, drink and poop.
Bird food is cheap, make sure your giving it seeds as its stock food and offer it other food as well every so often.
Some birds have the instinct to poop in the cage while others will always poop out of the cage. In that case you will want another perch for it to do its business.

Potty training. Yes im serious. Potty training.
Take note on how often your bird poops. My cockatiel used to poop every 30mins.
So every 30mins i would take it to its place and say the magic phrase "do a ship", pointing at it.
You can use whatever phrase you want as long as you use that same phrase over and over.
Don't let it back out until its done it.
As soon as its done give it praise and attention.
After a while some birds will automatically go to its spot to poo, with others it will be up to you to keep track of its bowels.
Whenever it does a poop in the wrong place lock it up in its cage for a while and leave it alone.

Out of curiosity how did you manage to correctly identify the bird species? Thats not an easy thing to do. Also im guessing you live no where near Torres Strait where you would find this bird in the wild. So im thinking it most certainly is someone's pet. I bet the owner misses it, it would be nice to give it back if you could find its owner, if not its yours. My mum befriended a lost budgie that approached her once.

Are its wings clipped? Be careful its doesn't fly away on you. Measures need to be taken in order to prevent that or at least lower the risk of it

Unfortunately Cristo, the story ends sadly. It came back to the beach with me after some days and flew onto a branch where it decided to stay.
The following day I'm down there again, towards the far end. Some indigenous folk were camped there with a fire going. I ask if they'd seen an overly friendly pigeon but they denied it. As was explaining what it looked like, I saw feathers on the sand. The long and short of it was, they had caught it and eaten it.
