ostriches in the wilderness

This passages was on my wall for years and I want to share it. I couldn’t understand why but something about it spoke. It is odd. About ostriches...but not about ostriches at all. It is a passage from where God speaks to Job, right before Job slaps a hand over his mouth: Job 40:1-5 [1] Moreover the Lord answered Job, and said, [2] Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him ? he that reproveth God, let him answer it. [3] Then Job answered the Lord , and said, [4] Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth. [5] Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.

Job 39:13-18
[13] Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich? [14] Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in dust, [15] And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them. [16] She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without fear; [17] Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding. [18] What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.

Lamentations 4:3
[3] Even the sea monsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones: the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.

how are these tying together iyo? Fwiw i could point out that Job seems to repent of the very same thing God commends him for in the end, namely his speech (..."as my servant Job has"), but this just might muddy the waters, bam ignore that part if you want for now

the part that stuck out to me was job 39:13-18. reason is because it confirms to me that by watching nature you can see the world. the good of the world and the bad are all represented. even through it all life still goes on. there is more i see in this ostriches in the wilderness. this is something that needs to be meditated upon.

“how are these tying together?” God(Spirit) tied them together didn’t He by relating the two? Upon looking up ostriches and the description on google, it is interesting to see man try to make every description of God fit perfectly into a box. watching them manipulate what or how ostriches really behave. forcing it all to fit into the exact same way God describes an ostrich. How often have you heard someone say Gods Word can’t be true because it doesn’t fit? Same as goats. And sheep. And the leviathan. And the dragon. And the ox that treads out the corn(which Paul compares himself to):1 Corinthians 9:9-10 [9] For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? [10] Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.

The two compare. So Jobs ostriches tell us intimate details about how “the daughter of my people” treat their young.

Lamentations 4:3-4
[3] Even the sea monsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones: the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness. [4] The tongue of the sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst: the young children ask bread, and no man breaketh it unto them.

“...the young children ask bread, and no man breaketh it unto them.” They have became as cruel as the ostriches who forget their children warming in sin, not caring if they get trampled under foot or broken by wild beast. They lack wisdom(the Spirit/God’s wisdom), all their labour is in vain because they lack fear.

But God gives wisdom(His).
God gives bread.
God never leaves His young. I know that sounds like a contradiction because His children do get trampled underfoot and broken by wild beast, but He never leaves us. The labour is not in vain.

When the Lord speaks in Job, not a word is wasted. God never wastes any word. A small seed(Word) planted can take root and grow into more.

Job 39:18
“[18] What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.“ —I’m not going to attempt to touch. but how often have you seen an ostrich lift herself up on high?

Why does it matter to me? When I first started reading His word, the book of Job was my favorite. You know how people have verses they claim and speak over their life... I had many from Job on my wall which seemed weird because they were not the usual promises people cling to in times of trouble. I figured if God could send water to the wilderness and make the tender herb grow...He could do something with my life. But I began to question if Job was even authentic and prayed over it. I have no doubt now that Job is.

Job 38:22-27
[22] Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, [23] Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war? [24] By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth? [25] Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder; [26] To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man; [27] To satisfy the desolate and waste ground ; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?

We are the desolate and waste ground.
The bud of the tender herb that springs forth from the water is Christ.

It is okay if you don’t agree...I still so value your input always, and appreciate getting to read your view of it. :)

“Gives thou goodly wings unto the peacocks? or...unto the ostrich?” Peacocks spread their plumage in a semicircle with a beautiful array of colors. Here was a contradiction: The peacock appears to be a useful bird because its gorgeous display delights the beholder with beauty and pleasure. On the other hand, the gangly ostrich appears ungainly, and its wings, feathers, and pinions do not seem to be of much value. After all, the ostrich has such a heavy body that its wings could never lift it off the ground, so one might ask, “Why does the ostrich have useless wings?” True, the wings are useless for flying above the ground, but they do have a function. Therefore, God was suggesting that there was a reason for the wings of both birds.

VERSE 14 and 15 “Which leaves her eggs in the earth, and warms them in dust, and forgets that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them.”

The female ostrich lays her eggs together and arranges them for the new progeny to come forth and then ignores them. But she does have a purpose or strategy. When the young come forth from the centralized eggs, they feed on the outer eggs. This enables them to survive out in the open barren land exposed to the elements. Gaining sufficient strength from feeding on the outer eggs, the little ones go forth on their own. In the future, the wondrous lessons illustrated by all of God’s creatures will be revealed to the world.

VERSE 16 “She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labor is in vain without fear.”

In other words, the female ostrich is without fear with regard to what will happen to her eggs.

VERSE 17 “Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding.”

Notice, God deprived her of wisdom, not Satan. God, the Creator of the ostrich, purposely did this. He has a reason for everything. “Neither hath He imparted to her understanding.” The element of understanding and memory is absent in the ostrich and other similar birds.

VERSE 18 “What time she lifts up herself on high, she scorns the horse and his rider.”

With regard to the peculiar wings of the ostrich, “When she rouses herself to flee, she laughs at the horse and his rider.” These wings, which cannot lift the bird into flight, help her accelerate so rapidly that a man on a horse cannot catch her, and she seems to laugh at the rider as if it is a game. Although a horse is swift, it is no match for the ostrich.

In all of these examples, God was implying to Job, “Although you do not understand something, there is a reason.” Without directly answering Job as to the reason for his suffering, God gave him small bits of information about the heavens, animals, birds, etc. With the ostrich, God said, “The wings of the female ostrich really are beneficial when she lifts herself up and runs to escape.” (Exerts taken from The Book of Job by Brother Frank Shallieu)

I like that. It makes me feel foolish. But I still like it.

i might have deemed the bud "us" and the water "Christ," but i guess many valid reflections can come from a passage too.
Horse and Rider is something i was just trying to share with @amadeus (reflecting on the "horse" part there earlier A, if that makes any sense), and i guess "princes walk and fools ride" should be considered there also. Of course you kinda have to see what the "horse" really is, but that is fairly obvious i guess

yes! the bud "us" and the water "Christ". But I might add: the bud produced, "us", by living water, is Christ.

Riding the wrong horse while those riding the right ones I guess did not even have any horses at least not of the kind a lot of people might be expecting.

I still am enriched with old things forgotten or new things not previously seen each time I read or find a reference in Job. Whether it is real or not in the one sense it is certainly real with God's message. What else is needed?

The desolate and waste ground, of course, is Zion, which has more than one meaning if we are able to understand them. It is certainly the Church, so empty and dry at the start but for those who really are of it and in it...

"And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations." Rev 22:1-2

What is it that the beggar should be begging for... a horse to ride? Well certainly the means to get from the wrong place to the right place. The wrong place for the children of Israel was in bondage in Egypt, but they started out on the right road [highway of holiness] toward the right place although most of them never arrived. Somewhere along the way perhaps they changed horses when they should not have and as a result they died in the wilderness.
