Is it just in that area? I mean we have no lines and you can get a dozen eggs here for $5 still
Where are you located?

California had to kill alot of chickens with bird flu.
My neighbor said a dozen eggs are twelve dollars.

We live in the south east, so I'm guessing that as most things are far more expensive in California (and even North of me) such as New York that location must have a little more to do with the higher prices also.

I am in the central part of the US, and prices are similar here for run of the mill eggs. Organic pasture raised eggs are about $6-$6.50/dozen. Organic "cage-free" are about $8 for an 18ct carton. Eggs are sometimes less abundant, but not horrible.

I asked some people in the industry and they said the BF is being blown way out of proportion. Sadly, it is a systematic attack on our food security.

Even still, I think we can both remember the days when the price of eggs fluctuated more or less around $1

Those were the good ol' days when egg salad didn't break the bank

It is part of inflation. Hamburger helper was a $1 and a pound of hamburger was a $1. It's not a cheap meal anymore.

My daughter has 40 chickens and 4 roosters. I joked with her about going out and holding a meeting. Since molting, they stopped laying eggs. Either the union needs to be broken up, or all employees fired and go to the Farm Store and buy a new crop of employees.

Pray for them it is not fair that people buy it at tha price. May God save those persons stealing to feed to family. They are good people who want to feed their family. People don't deserve it.

And this ^here^ is the reason I opted for those cans I linked to, because chickens eventually (in a short period of time) become dependents on food stamps, and no longer egg productive, so you still need to feed all of them on top of having to buy your eggs at the store at inflated prices.

Although, if she has roosters why did she not breed some of those hens?

I dont think I ever ate an egg layer chicken but she could just eat chicken for quite awhile.

Skip the frilly designer chicken breeds and get breeds that are known for egg production like Black Australorp, Rhode Island Red, White Leghorn, etc. They will lay 350+ eggs a year. My Black Australorps will lay in winter almost as much as other months. Start watching and breed the ones that are the best egg layers (size and quantity). Black Australorp are great foragers and free range very well. Put some solar "fairy lights" inside the coop so they have more light and will lay more eggs. Many chicken farmers will rotate their layers out at 2.5 to 3 years old and replace them with another generation.

People confuse roosters with hens and some don't remember that happens once in a movie or a cartoon a person bought pure roosters didn't realize their were no females there how can you eggs if no females. Lol. Their are no females and men looking each and asking what they expecting us to do ! The roosters looking we can't have eggs lol. You have to have both to produce eggs ! Thier just no food for people their no money. Everyone is broke !

Dual-purpose breeds may be worth looking into. They won't lay as many eggs, but you may still get 250-ish eggs a year out of a hen that will be a nice size at 2 or 3 years old. Try moving toward 100% free range ... plant some pasture for forage ....rows of sunflowers for seeds, peas, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, squash .... there's a cost, but much cheaper than chicken feed.

I thought most fishing licences would be around $10 and so still cheaper than a 12 pack of eggs, and so I thought, let me check out how much it would cost to cast a line with a hook on it in a place like California

This is insane

California Fishing License Fees

The cost of a fishing license in California varies based on the type of license and whether you are a resident or non-resident. As of 2025, a one-day license costs $20.52 for both residents and non-residents, For annual licenses, residents pay $691.75 and non-residents pay $166.89.23

Find someone with a stocked pond....? lol

When I was a kid, we fished without a license. Things are so crazy!
