There has been a steady decline in holiness in the church...which in turn has sparked the steady decline of righteousness in the world.

The author treats secularization as a passive next step in social evolution. The contrary is actually the fact. The agents of secularization actively tear at the foundations of family, faith, tradition, and history in a multipronged attack against historical Americanism. Mary has not spent significant time researching or experiencing America the Beautiful over and against America the Welfare Nanny State. The family is not the lynchpin, it's doctrine and doctrine is taboo in American religiosity.

Eberstradt seems to attribute the decline of Christianity in the western world, to the decline of the family unit as a whole. The grassroots level of every society where economic and political climate play a leading role as well as the decline of moral issues including divorce and single parenting. That is what I understand her to be saying and yes, she is viewing it analytically overall rather than weighing up other aspects but the article was about the cost or impact of secularization...I personally think that she has got it around the wrong way myself

That is a very odd question... An individual can impact their environment or the environment can impact the individual, which includes the socio/economic and political climate. However, when we let go of God as the center of our world, the stabling influence of the family unit...then decline is inevitable...JMHO

Blessings!

There has been a steady decline of teaching hell in the church which in turn has lent to a decline in holiness in the church.

True...The desire for ministers to make an impact in today's modern society, has led to the sacrificing of some key salvific components, rarely preached today. :)

"If there is a decay of conscience, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the public press lacks moral discernment, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the church is degenerate and worldly, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the world loses its interest in Christianity, the pulpit is responsible for it. If Satan rules in our halls of legislation, the pulpit is responsible for it. If our politics become so corrupt that their very foundations of our government are ready to fall away, the pulpit is responsible for it."
- Charles Finney
