Hi there,
So in a few short words, I grew up in a wealthy family, in a wealthy area, going to a wealthy Church. Then the Devil snatched it all away and I made some very poor life choices. Then I came back to the faith and started to pick up the pieces. That's the short of it. But this is what I learned: you need to back yourself. There are decisions you would never have made, if you had the right faith. It's a scientific fact: people who have abusive or neglected upbringings, make poorer life choices - do drugs, get arrested, be sexually immoral, etc. There's nothing different about people who have different upbringings, fundamentally, they just get caught up in a way of life that is destructive.
So what am I saying? I am saying you have to develop a self-belief, not so much a thicker skin, but a trust that had things not gone awry, you would have made the right decisions. This believing in yourself, has a snowball effect: you start to expect to make better decisions, expecting greater encourages you to do greater, doing greater props your spirit up within yourself and you start to see as the Holy Spirit sees. Make no mistake it is the work of the Holy Spirit in you, that you are allowing to justify you - it's just that to begin with, you don't know what you are looking for - what was the first thing John the Baptist saw when he baptized Jesus? The Holy Spirit! This is the same Holy Spirit that will help you on your walk with Christ.
So what do we do with the Holy Spirit? You let Him work! The point is, if you believe your life could have turned out better, the Holy Spirit is able to make it turn out better. You are backing yourself and the Holy Spirit trusts that you believe in Him with you. If you can back yourself, you can back the Holy Spirit - not that He wants you to "back Him", but He wants you to believe in Him, with you. You aren't going to get to that point (of trust) unless you value what God has done for you, and "backing yourself" backs what God has done in you. I know it seems messy, why would you not just trust the Holy Spirit from the start? Right, but when you look back, you realise that God has always been there. God has always been backing you!
I hope this has been of some encouragement.
God bless.
