I agree with your statement, the beast and the False Prophet are not two persons nor is the beast the Roman Empire as some have suggested.

The beasts of Daniel 7 are fallen heavenly hosts who are able to influence people groups, kingdoms and empires to manifest their respective dominate characteristic. Daniel 7:2 confirms this.

They can have nuanced meanings but the issue is making those lengths of times into different and longer periods of time. You have a beast who has been around for centuries while the bible gives a far shorter time. That same beast is destroyed by a coming of Jesus so that also places it's timeframe at the end of this age during a short period of time.
