the Bible says Mary chose the better thing she chose to be served by JESUS SHE SAT AT JESUS FEET AND LET HIM SERVE HER
with his word .

Martha chose the lesser thing. she run around serving Jesus. NOT nearly as noble as letting. Jesus serve her;

its better to BE SERVED BY JESUS THAN SERVING JESUS .

you say you do all these things for Jesus helping the poor etc

that's the lesser things its better to be served by Jesus Open your bibles and sit at Jesus feet and let him serve you.. Take his body and blood in the sacrament and let him serve you.. its the better thing

there always time for the lesser things..AND YOU WIL find you get them done better to..

get your priorities straight.

It is better to be still and listen to the Lord than it is to minister for the Lord without first being still and listening to the Lord. :) JMHO

One was more concerned with "doing" and her works, teh other who chose" teh Better things". choose to know waht Jesus had to say. Thats teh bibles opinion, and if it was Jesus, who is going to argue with Him??

OK. Let's move up a few verses and be served by Jesus; "Go, and do thou likewise."

Martha was preparing the carnal food, which is necessary.

Jesus was serving the spiritual food which is necessary for eternal life, "that good part."

Jesus; "I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do."

Now it's our turn.

The needy have carnal needs.
The spiritually needy, even though they may be rich, have spiritual needs.

We are to help those with carnal needs, as much as we can.

"that good part"

It's our turn to feed the spiritual food to the spiritually needy.

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:"

Come on....do you want a girlfriend that cooks and cleans for you...it is very nice, indeed.
Or would you rather have a girlfriend that sat at your feet adoring every part, every inch of you...
all in love and googoo eyed.

Dah...

The Lord was received by a religious woman into her house, and her name was Martha. And while she was occupied in the care of serving, her sister Mary was sitting at the Lord's Feet, and hearing His Word. The one was busy, the other was still; one was giving out, the other was being filled. Yet Martha, all busy as she was in that occupation and toil of serving, appealed to the Lord, and complained of her sister, that she did not help her in her labour. But the Lord answered Martha for Mary; and He became her Advocate, who had been appealed to as Judge. Martha, He says, you are occupied about many things, when one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the better part, which shall not be taken from her....appeal of the appellant, and the sentence of the Judge. Which sentence answered the appellant, defended the other's cause. For Mary was intent on the sweetness of the Lord's word. Martha was intent, how she might feed the Lord; Mary intent how she might be fed by the Lord. By Martha a feast was being prepared for the Lord, in whose feast Mary was even now delighting herself...

In these two women the two lives are figured, the life present, and the life to come, the life of labour, and the life of quiet, the life of sorrow, and the life of blessedness, the life temporal, and the life eternal. ...What Martha was doing, that we are now; what Mary was doing, that we hope for. Let us do the first well, that we may have the second fully. quoted from a sermon by Saint Augustine.

What does that mean .... "sit at Jesus feet"

What does that mean ..... "let him serve you"

I hear those ... "Christian catch phrases" ... all the time .... and they sound like somebodies imaginations

When we take our eyes off of the Lord it usually ends up with our focus ending up on ourselves. Just like in Martha's case, " Doesn't it bother you Lord that Mary has left me to do all the work? Please tell her to help me."

In Peter's case we can see it again, when Peter took his eyes off of the Lord and looked at the waves he cried out "Lord save me!"

So I believe that focusing on other things, generally we will end up with "I" trouble.

Mary desired to sit a Jesus' feet and learn from Him be in communion, fellowship and relationship with Him. Martha cared about cooking and fulfilling the duties of a woman as was mandated by the culture of the time. One chose Christ and relationship the other duty to the culture. We must choose Jesus and learn from Him and become intimate with Him and dependent on Him allowing Him to serve us with salvation and we thus by our duty to Him serve Him!
