23 Jesus said to them, ''Surely you will quote this proverb to me: 'Physician, heal yourself! And you will tell me, 'Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.' '' 24 ''Truly I tell you,'' he continued, ''no prophet is accepted in his hometown. 25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when the sky was shut for three and a healf years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed ---- only Naaman the Syrion.'' 28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way. Luke 4:23-30

I believe this story indicates that God can be discriminating when He decides to heal someone or some region. In this case, Jesus was indicating that God would not heal many in Israel due to their unbelief--not belief in miracles but belief in God's judgment. They were unafraid of God's judgment upon their ungodly behavior and continued to live lawless lives, whether overt or private.

Jesus' own home in Nazareth did not experience much indication of Jesus' healing power frankly because they did not deserve it. It's not that anybody can deserve God's kindness, but there has to be a willingness to repent and to humble one's self before God before He will show favor.

Jesus said quite clearly that He longed to bring grace and mercy to Jerusalem, but he indicated they were not open to accept his message of repentance and true faith in God's moral laws. So they would continue in their wicked ways, crucify their Messiah, and suffer the loss of both their capital city and their holy Temple.

If Israel had come to repentance, as even pagan Nineveh had done in ancient times, forgiveness would've been there. But it was not to be. Wickedness spreads like gangrene, and the public follow their corrupt religious leaders right off of the cliff. Healing cannot come to the unrepentant and obstinate.

No one "deserves" to be forgiven, or healed.

God does this because "God is love".

And the verse just showed you that "No prophet is honored in their own hometown"..

So, realize that Jesus was also a Prophet, and yet, He didnt start His ministry, until He was in His 30's... so, people knew Him, in His Hometown, and suddenly.. He is the "Messiah"?... .= not many believed. = not many healed.

Now, how is this applicable to any Christian. ??

Well, its like this..

People knew you before you were a Christian. They knew you when you LOVED SIN... and "now that you got religion"... they dont believe you... because they knew you before you "got religion".
So, dont look for family members, and old friends, or a unsaved husband or wife... to ever really realize what has happened to you, .. and that is because they knew you when you were the sinner, and loved sinning, just like them.

And they knew Jesus when he was making wooden tables and wooden chairs, and wooden window frames, and so forth........ before He told them......."I am before Moses". "Believe in Me".

Well, I had a different experience in my own life. I grew up in church and early on lived a fairly moral, Christian life, praying every day and living by God's rules. But I backslid in my teens until I came to my senses, that sin does not pay well. When I repented among my school acquaintances, nobody questioned my commitment. Nobody doubted my conversion.

So I think there may have been some skepticism with Jesus with respect to his conversion from carpenter to Messiah and prophet. However, I don't think the issue was a problem with intellectual comprehension, with understanding this change of occupations. It rather seems to be the spiritual message he embraced when he began to proclaim it.

The reference back to his carpenter days was an attempt to ignore the prophetic message, the spiritual message. It was not an inability to accept somebody going from regular job to prophet. Amos had done this in Israel's history, going from one occupation to another, following God's call.

Amos 7.12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Get out, you seer! Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there. 13 Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel, because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple of the kingdom.”
14 Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. 15 But the Lord took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’

When I said Israel did not "deserve" God's mercy, I explained that. Since Jesus alone won our atonement, nobody can say they deserve atonement. The way we "deserve" anything is by making an appeal through faith. If it is genuine God will recognize it.

I think he spoke of the fact that no one would believe him. God sends people to those who will receive his message, if they are not going to receive his message God is not obligated to send anyone

When I repented among my school acquaintances

What do you mean by : "repent among my school acquaintances"?

Where they all born again, and you joined them, or where they Hell bound sinners, and "didnt question your conversion"?

Be clear, as this should be interesting to read, how you explain that....
