This causes a problem for those who believe that the week that Jesus went to the cross was a normal Sabbath week, and it was assumed that the legs of the criminals were broken on the Friday so they weren't hanging on the cross on the Saturday.

But the Holy Spirit said through the gospel writers that Jesus was dead for three days and three nights. We either have to say that people's calculations are wrong, or the Holy Spirit was wrong. But we know that the Holy Spirit is always accurate in what He says, and the truth is that Jesus spent exactly three days and three nights in the tomb.

But, the Holy Spirit said just "three days and nights", He didn't specify that all those days were exactly 24 hour days, showing that the first day may not have been 24 hours. So, if Jesus died at 3pm on the Thursday, then the three days would be from 3pm Thursday, all of Friday, and all of Saturday, and the nights would have been Thursday night, Friday night and Saturday night.

Now, we know from the historical record, that this particular Sabbath week was not the ordinary one. We know that there there were many pilgrims for all over the regions who were in Jerusalem at the time of the day of Pentecost. Also, that it was the Sabbath Week which included the Passover. This meant that Friday and Saturday were both part of the Sabbath for that week, the Friday being the preparation, the passover lambs killed at 3pm on the Thursday, the exact time when Jesus died on the cross (quite significant being that Jesus is our Passover Lamb). Even the time that Jesus went to the cross and spent just three hours suffering the wrath of God for our sin, had to be planned so that Jesus had to give up His life exactly when the Passover lambs were to be killed.

So, the Friday had to be the day when all the preparations for the Passover had to be done, because no one could work on the Saturday. The last supper was not the Passover because it was on Wednesday night, before the Passover lambs were actually killed at 3pm on the Thursday.

I have included all this to make the background to be perfectly clear as to why Jesus did spend an actual three days and three nights in the tomb, and he died at the exact time the Passover lambs were killed, to link it with His death as our Passover Lamb.

So, the Holy Spirit is totally correct about the time Jesus actually spent in the tomb, and that people who say that Jesus died on the Friday are not correct and are giving the impression that the Holy Spirit is wrong in what He said to the gospel writers.

Night #1, from 6pm to 6am = 1 Night. this is your Good Friday... correct.

Day #3, 6am to 6pm...... uh O did he not rise on Day 3 well you still have a NIGHT to Go to get 3 nights.

thanks for the reply but I have just one little problem with this and here it is, what sabbath was the next day from the cruifiction? supportive scripture, Mark 15:42 "And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath". so what day was that?

You are combining two separate verses from two different contexts. The Holy Spirit didn't say that Jesus was in the tomb 3 12 hour days. He just said "three days" which fits from 3pm to dusk on the first day (Thursday) leading to a night, two whole days and a night, which makes three days.

Remember this Scripture:
"Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you and prove you a liar" (Proverbs 30:5-6).

What this is saying is that every word of God is flawless, so if the Holy Spirit says that Jesus was in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights, then that is how many days and nights He spent there. To say different is to say that this word of God is flawed, and therefore the Holy Spirit who said it is flawed, leading to the gospel that you are depending on for your eternal salvation is flawed. See where this is leading?

The second verse is that if you add to God's word (by telling the Holy Spirit that He meant 12 hour days when He never said anything of the sort), then God could come to you, rebuke you and expose you as a liar.

Now, I am not saying these things. The Holy Spirit is. All I am doing is repeating what the Holy Spirit has said in the Bible.

Not for God, He set up the weekly cycle of seven days from Creation...
Genesis 2:1-3 King James Version (KJV)
1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

I guess it depends on what god you serve! God sanctified One Given Day, and if we keep that Given Day, set apart and Holy, then we are being Obedient to that God, and we also by keeping That Day, we Declare that He is The God of Creation, for in that Day HE Rested!

The Bible does not say Friday to Sunday. It says the day before the Passover which was the Thursday before (John 13:1). That was the day of preparation when the Passover lambs were killed, and the legs of the criminals were broken because the Jews did not want them hanging on the cross during Passover day and the following Sabbath.

The week where the Passover and the Sabbath combined was not the ordinary Sabbath week. It was a festival week where pilgrims from all around the regions came to celebrate the Passover in Jerusalem. We know this because many were still there 40 days later for the Feast of Tabernacles (Pentecost). Because travel was much slower and longer in those days, it makes no sense for them to travel back home and then all the way back for the next festival. So, many stayed over, and that is why they were there on the Day of Pentecost.

So the timeline for the week that Jesus was crucified was as follows"
The last supper with the disciples and the arrest of Jesus - Wednesday
The trial of Jesus - Thursday morning.
The crucifixion - 12 noon on Thursday
Jesus died and buried - 3pm on Thursday
Passover preparation day in which the lambs were killed - Thursday
Passover itself - Friday
The Sabbath day - Saturday
Jesus' resurrection - Sunday morning.

There is nothing in the Scripture that backs your answer up. You are reading into Scripture that is not there, and you are ignoring Jewish culture and history and what happens in Passover week. Proverbs 30:5-6 is your judge. Not me. You are adding to Scripture to support your own dogmatic view that Jesus had to die on the Friday, and you are twisting another verse out of its context to try and prove it.

There is much more evidential support through the precise words of the Holy Spirit - 3 days and 3 nights, and through the Jewish Passover week, and that the last supper was before the Passover, and that Jewish custom would have had people hanging on crosses during Passover day (Friday) an offence to them and would have caused a major riot against the Roman authorities in Jerusalem.

But there is no evidential support for Jesus being crucified on the Friday, and it makes a liar out of Jesus himself when He said as Jonah was in the belly of the fish for 3 days and 3 night so He will be 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth. So if Jesus Himself said it, and the Holy Spirit said it, then Jesus spent 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth.

So who's lying, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, or you?
