They gave Jesus a cup but it was the wrong cup!

His Father gave him a cup to drink indeed, but it was not that vinegar... nor was gall the proper food to eat:

His cup was the agonized suffering and death on that cross. No relief until he was dead... then would come the Resurrection!

Our cup? This is what we want to eat and drink, it is not?

"Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you." John 6:53

i get what you are saying but for me it still doesn’t make sense. For instance

Yet Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

is there a difference in He tasted the wine mingled with gall, but did not drink? Does it matter, maybe not. except (Imo) the wine mixed with gall that he would not drink of after tasting death…was not alcohol but their deeds. Instead tasting of their wine mixed with gall: he said “forgive them Father for they know not what they do.” While they gave him the root of gall and bitterness … 1 Peter 2:22-23 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: [23] Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
Matthew 27:34 Lexicon: they gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink.

hopefully what I’m trying to say makes sense. I’m not debating his drinking of the cup. I’m asking more about life application and “follow in his steps”?

We also need to be overcomers as Jesus was the first overcomer. What did Jesus overcome? The world of temptation! The Way has been opened and the means to accomplish it provided. Jesus grew and we must grow!

"For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin." Heb 4:15

"These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." John 16:33

I believe he overcame the last temptation when he said the same words the third time here:

"And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." Matt 26:39

"And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words." Matt 26:44

He overcame his own world of temptation as a man. And then he was no longer in that world. That world was NOT planet Earth.

"And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are." John 17:11

Jesus overcame the world and then, for him, there were no more temptations. He still had to go to the cross and pay the price, but unlike before he was no longer tempted to ease the pain of his flesh nor to avoid the horrible death which was before him. He was ready to accomplish his Father's will.

Jesus opened up the Way which had been closed when Adam and Eve were put outside of the Garden of Eden. The Way however is a way of struggle and difficulty and temptations. We must also overcome, but the means has been provided through the power of the Word of God quickened in us by the Holy Spirit!

And the promises to overcomers:

"He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God." Rev 2:7

"He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death." Rev 2:11

"He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it." Rev 2:17

"And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:" Rev 2:26

"He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels." Rev 3:5

I am a bit more liberal on this point Gen, many view feeling the liquor as being drunk, I don't think personally that is a sin, in fact the Bible says that drink was given to us for our enjoyment, to make our hearts glad (Psalm 104:15)

Keep in mind this is a personal opinion, but we all know what a drunk is, one who's life is affected by alcohol, unable to function in society, not able to live a normal life, sometimes even homeless because of it. That is what I personally perceive as drunkenness. I may very well be in error on this, as many of my brothers and sisters feel differently. Keep in mind, one certainly does not have to drink to please God, and it is a sin to violate mans law in regard to it's usage, so many Christians choose to abstain, but many do partake as well.

Seems that you are unfamiliar with weddings of that era, when a wedding feast typically lasted for one to two weeks. In this situation, if you actually take the time to read the account, they ran out of wine after only three days.

And we know that the Marriage Supper of the Lamb features fine wine.

Because what fruit does He not drink of from the vine until it is made anew in the Kingdom of God?

Wine in Scripture is a symbol of JOY.

No, as you said, even Jesus drank wine. Drinking alcohol is not a sin. Drunkeness, however, is.

drunkeness isn't a sin for some people:

That verse is referring specifically to grape juice. Read about the benefits of grape juice for the heart. It is not the alcohol that contains/provides these benefits though fermented juice still contains some of these elements, the pure juice contains them in much more abundance.

First, you don't have to be a drunk, to be drunken.

Secondly, there are many functioning addicts who hold down very good jobs; especially now that we have so many stimulants like ritalin/adderall/stratera to help them when hungover and revive them when they run down. I have a family member who graduated college with a double major while being a raging alcoholic, and almost 2 decades later holds down a very well-paying job, but knows they have a major problem with alcohol (wine to be exact) and can't escape it after multiple hospital stays and rehabs.

Those who partake dishonor God's Temple. I have been down that road many times, even as a Christian, and it always ends in trouble and dishonor.

When one looks honestly at all that the Bible has to say about alcohol, it is crystal clear that it advises Christians not to ingest alcohol.

Those who object vehemently are snared and deceived.

Plain and simple.

Simple question for Christians considering drinking: Why take an action that inevitably ends in sin?

Becoming drunk is a sin. How do you know the exact moment that you are drunk?

Science says that the moment you feel a "buzz", you are impaired.

Scripture makes clear that knowingly ingesting something that is mind-altering gives spirits (demons) legal right to harass and manipulate you.

It's a judgment call for all Christians.

Bottom line: How sincere are you in your walk with Christ?

That's what it comes down to.

What it is saying is: Give alcohol to those who have nothing left to live for.

If that's your case, so be it. But if it's not, then you are showing a profound lack of faith.

Does God not give you joy? Does God not handle your worries and concerns? Is it necessary to self-medicate with drugs/alcohol when you are feeling down (bored) or uncertain of things in your life?

The powerful thing about addiction is that it makes an excuse for every single circumstance in life.

Something good happened? Drink/drug.
Something bad happened? Drink/drug.
Feeling happy? Drink/drug.
Feeling sad? Drink/drug.
Got a new job? Get wasted.
Got fired? Get wasted.

If you're dying, or have nothing left to live for, the Bible says Drink up!

Regarding the OP: no, drinking is not (a) sin. By "drinking" I assume what is meant is drinking alcohol. If Jesus drank wine, converted water into (excellent) wine, and shared it with His disciples, that should be sufficient to answer the question.

On the other hand, drinking to excess, i.e., becoming drunk, is not advisable.
