Sorry I missed this post. Yeah, I've been to a lot of places, but many of them didn't keep me long enough for me to remember too many details. My daddy was always on the road. He used to take us from Millington to Harriman, TN (350 mi) fairly often. He'd talk to my granny for a little bit and then head for the carport swing where he would soon be heard to say "I've seen my mama; I'm ready to go." I call him often and he'll say "Well, son, I've run out of sumpm to say." He never wastes time.

Yeah, Minot AFB was always an assignment nobody in the Air Force wanted. They say that the cold flight line wind would cut you in half. I know it's just an urban legend, but the story is told of a young Security Policeman who got cold one night and decided to crawl into some landing gear (I don't even know what kind of aircraft they had there at the time--I think it might have been B52s) to shield himself from the wind, fell asleep, and froze to death. That boy's father was supposedly Paul Harvey, the famous radio news commentator. The story appears to be patently false. I don't know how such a tale could be conceived. Oh, well. Hopefully, I'm not guilty of gossip-mongering or bearing false witness here.

Had a USAF buddy who was a DEW radar man up around the Arctic circle during the Cold War. That’s cold!
Didn't a U2 have giro problems during the JFK Presidency and get lost in the Arctic?

Speaking of Death Valley .... @Lambano ...idk if you're a southern gospel guy, but that's what I listened to through most of my beginning years with the Lord and I still love those old songs.

A lot of that stuff is cloak-and-dagger, still classified, so based on hearsay and the cliched but likely conspiracy theories. I don't know much about the U2 story, but in my opinion the most intriguing story of the Cuban Middle Crisis is the Russian Sub task force commander Vasili Arkhipov's lone decision that probably prevented the most potentially devastating incident that would likely have precipitated a major global thermonuclear response. I can't remember whether I got the best telling of the story from Oliver Stone's American History series or Robert MacNamara's "Fog Of War" documentary, both of which I highly recommend (for what that's worth). But a brief account of it can be found on Wikipedia here.

On the one hand he said the CIA and operatives would not have eliminated Diem in Vietnam without JFK's orders. On the other hand he was sure that JFK gave no such order.....
