It could be a couple different things I think.
Scripture says that Obediance is rewarded. WHen we are obediant and faithful to the Lord, we walk with Him and do His work. In return He gives us His protection and Blessings here and there. Life can get easier but it can get harder also, like you imply. And scripture backs that up. When you align yourself with the Lord, the world will turn on you. And depending on how close you are to the Lord it can even be taken to the point of demoic attacks and active Witchcraft being used against you.
I dunno how close to the Lord you are. If you are living in disobediance then you dont have the Lords protection. When one chooses to go the way of the world, the Lord will let you go to chase your pleasures and He will not violate your free will to choose.
On the other hand, the more you approach the Lord and walk with Him, the more He WILL test you and put you in dire situations to test your reaction and to see if you trust Him and walk in faith.
(One time I made the mistake of praying for more faith. It seemed like so much trouble got dumped on me immediaitely that it made it very hard for me for a season. I did come out of that season with more faith, but it was not fun!)
Like is written...To more who is given, more will be required...So when you start climbing the mountain of God, it gets real steep real quick and the higher you get the further you will fall and more hurt you will have when you do fall. (ask me how I know

You see our Human Journey here on earth is for our education from the Lord. This is Boot Camp of the Kingdom of the Lord God Creator! It's an exercise in control of your inner self and to become one with our creator once again, one where you must learn to love God and your neighbor and your enemies in an enviroment that is conducive to learning because the odds are against you and the deck is stacked. We learn through failure and consequential growth which comes from it. It's also an exercise of Delayed Gratification where we are to put off the pleasures of the flesh and world for a better Tomorrow with the Lord...And you have the free will to choose which path you draw closer too, the world or the Lord God.
The Lord wants to grow you up into a being that He can be proud of. So it is not an easy past, and at the same time it is an easy path! Because the more you lean on the Lord and choose to put your trust in Him when you should, the More He will protect you and teach you and walk with you. He will be with you, in you, beside you, and goes first to clear your way and is your rear Guard. With God with us, who can stand against us?
There are ways to grow faith and trust in the Lord (without asking for a crash course!). You let Him make the decisions for you and set all of your pleasures of the world aside, for Him. You will still be tested but things get noticablely better overall. The problems and attacks still come but you get used to saying, Lord I dont know what you are doing here but I trust you and will watch what happens...
When I began doing that, everything clicked. Oh I have nothing to brag about but I am content. Some tests I fail, some tests I have passed. It's like I was building up a resume of Trust between me and the Lord. And when I was confronted with a frustrating situation of some sort, I would, obey what His Word says and put it in His hands to have faith in action and it was then that somehow, everything worked out ok because something happened at the last minute. I began noticing a pattern in the Lord helping me. "Last minute never Late" He wants us to endure to the end, and when you endure and walk in this faith...It is obeying Him and scripture says this is how we love God when we obey Him. And occassionally, it's like we get promoted a little bit!
A greater anointing and purpose, new oppurtunities, things just got better. Oh I had to prove it to myself. SO since it says we can test the Lord one way, through Tithing, I decided to do that. I couldnt afford to Tithe, I was Married with kids, nuff said! But if I didnt give God the chance to show me, then I knew it was impossible to happen for me. SO I did it anyway and snuck around behind my wife's back and cashing checks on the way home & stop by a church to make my tithes payment on what I had earned (We were self employed). So as long as I walked in with a fistful of cash for her, she was happy! I didnt let my left hand know what the right hand was doing. And guess what I learned by Tithing even when I supposedly could not afford to? I learned very very well that, I can't afford NOT to tithe! I never missed any of that money and neither did my wife! Money and blessings just dropped into my lap out of the sky. (This is the Lord building His resume of trust with me!) It became a different reality for me. I had proved the Lord is good and stands behind His Word. One time, we was hurting rather seriously financially and on the way to the church I asked myself if this is real because I Do need that money! It was my slow time of the year and we had a few decent size bills due right now! But I was doing something with the Lord according to His word so I forced myself to go pay the tithe anyway. I hesitated one more time at this churches dropbox...and shook it off real fast and shoved the money through the slot! Then I turned and left the building, but before I had even left the parking lot my phone rang so I stopped, it might be work! And it was work. It was one of those technical but yet easy jobs whield natually yeild high profit! WOW! The Lord wanted me to know. He wanted to say thank you to me. I felt so blessed and of course everything worked out! Praise the Lord for He is real and true!
I better not make this too long. But basically, if you are in disobeidance, you are on your own. If you are walking in Obediance thenthings will get better. Lst minute, but never late!
If you are walking closely with the Lord then it might even be emonic attacks or withcraft because you are a dangerous person to the dark kingdom so Will draw fire.
