A legendary boxer is dead at age 76.

How should Christians view violent, contact sports? On the one hand, we are called to be gentle, peaceful souls. On the other hand, a community might have cause to defend itself (Matthew 18: 15 - 17), perhaps even with the help of a (pugilistic) hero.

Violent sports do have rules intended to keep the contest even and limit bodily damage, but contenders do get hurt, and even permanently injured. Should Christians speak out against these sports, or ignore them, as an aspect of the world we have nothing to do with?

Confession: at one time I enjoyed watching these sports, especially when the skill of the underdog prevailed; not much anymore.

RIP, amen.

I think I would have more concerns now that it’s become apparent that many brain injuries and dementia like symptoms can be linked to contact sports. I must admit that I never really understood how people enjoyed watching two men hitting one another - but certain characters have stood out and I have found the, inspiring ( Ali being one of them , in England we had Henry cooper ) My children grew up watching WWE , and my grandmother use to love watching wrestling on a Saturday afternoon. I remember she got annoyed with me once because I told her it was all set up ! lol

Boxing, wrestling and track are ancient sports that were part of the first Olympics. Never forget that violence always solves problems - despite the propaganda to the contrary. This explains why every government in history has both a police and military force.

I don’t believe a KO = concussion. But one reason I never boxed is out of fear for brain trauma.

To answer your question, How should Christians view violent, contact sports? Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom.
