Yes, it can be over the top. The many Christian women that do it usually have it done more carefully and sparingly, so that it's not over the top. It used to be a male sailor and biker thing, but definitely not any more, (exclusively, at least). Lavishly - like you say - isn't obligatory; maybe less is more.
@Waiting on him As the parlors have been opening up again (clearly keen on making up for lost business), I saw in the window of a local parlor a notice which said - optimistically - "You need a tattoo"....
On the one hand, they would say that, wouldn't they?
(On the other hand, it accurately expresses the law of supply and demand as regards tattoo services, doesn't it?)
