Jesus says=== Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.
If you don't judge sin, you're not a mature or adept Christian. Paul said we are to judge those within the church. And he taught that one of the gifts of the Spirit is discernment. If you cannot judge sin from righteousness, and if you can't figure out if someone needs to go to jail or not, you lack tools.
My sense is that you're probably a mature Christian who has been taught all his life to be careful with judging others. We often judge by appearances or out of passion. We make mistakes.
I wouldn't fault you for being careful. However, it is the role of judges to determine if a criminal lives or dies, or how long his sentence should be. As Christians we should be more in tune with what is just. What do you think, brother?
Over time I've realized that we do need to be careful with judging. Some look lazy when they have some kind of disability. Some look lazy when they're sick. We tend to judge too quickly.
And when someone who is a pagan commits a terrible act, we often consign them to Hell in our mind, without considering their level of knowledge. They may have experienced trauma, and they may have lived in total ignorance about justice and love.
But all men have a conscience, and as Christians we are called to proclaim truth. If we are unsure of that truth, why should anybody listen to us? We have a responsibility to proclaim all men sinners--that is not judging them. Our purpose is to show them a way out, a way in which they can be released from condemnation.
If we call them to grace without repentance, will they really experience grace? I don't think so. We have to *judge* if they have really repented. I have to *judge* if they have really changed. We should certainly know if they know Christ. What do you think?
This latest storm, Laura, has indeed brought divine judgment upon Louisiana and Texas--it seems to have hit Louisiana worse? Note the mercy that has come with this judgment. God destroyed a lot of infrastructure, and made life miserable for many people. But many of those people are not innocent--we know that.
But God seems to have spared many lives. He is interested in their repentance--not their destruction. Destruction comes when the heart of men become recalcitrant and they curse God rather than repent. As we approach those days, it will be fulfilled what it says in Revelation: rather than repent, they will curse God for their plagues! And then final destruction will come upon them.
What do you think? Is God judgmental? Or, are you simply unable to discern what God is doing in history? We need to pray and make sure that we mix mercy with an attitude of judgment. I get that.
