Well - I live in California, and while I would usually say that California is, or was once, far more likely to by them and vis versa, considering that California was at least once the fifth highest economy in the world, I am not so sure about that anymore. With all our smartest and richest people leaving and fires burning down the rest of the place, perhaps they could by California? Yet someone needs to tell them out far California is in debt first!!

It wouldn't just cost them 1 trillion dollars!! They might need to come up with twice that to make the purchase covered the dept.

I drove with my mom up the Coast as far as San Luis Opisbo around 1980s. We briefly stopped in Solvang...wish we would have seen more of it.

We found out there was a big convention so all of the motels, hotels were booked, up and down the coast. We ran into people driving down the coast and they told us. So mom and I had to sleep in the car. I parked it in the parking lot behind city government buildings in San Luis Opisbo.

The next morning we were lucky to find a motel in Santa Barbara and then went back to Los Angeles.

And to think we used to have a budget surplus.

And to think we used to have a budget surplus.

Yeah we did have a nice budget surplus because of a change in the Supreme Court which allowed states to collect on interstate commerce, which clearly looked to be unconstitutional, because the constitution provided a rule against taxes on interstate commerce. It is a bit more complicated than that, but the result was the all states could and most did require companies like Amazon, to collect sales tax for any sales coming from their state. It really did look like the Supreme Court bowed down to money instead of upholding the US Constitution, but that was the decision that took a lot more money from the people of the USA and gave it do the state governments. So California did wind up with a big surplus.

That surplus went to a number of places and projects, but a big chunk was given back to the population of California, and strangely or really not so strangely, that chunk (about $700 person) was given to the voters right before the last time Newsom got re-elected. I remember I got mine the Thursday before the Tuesday election that gave Governor Newsom and large victory. HUMMM????

It almost seemed like the voters were being bought out!

Regardless, it seems less than a couple of months later California was in serious debt again - meaning in the billions of dollars. And in just a couple of months? How did the state controller mis-plan that payout so poorly that they didn't realize the payout would cause a severe budget deficit just a couple of months later?

I live in California, but it is clear that this in not the best run state in the Union. Sadly, you pretty much just have to laugh at the government here. I live in Southern California and the fires, just north of me, were so sad. But lack of water, meaning an unfilled reservoir because of a maintenance issue, lot of equipment not ready for use because of lack of funds to maintain them, massive millions moved from the fire department for different services, and massive increases in the salary for the fire chief (who just happens to be now be a lady who likes other ladies, so to speak) and also for her assistant (who also just happens to be a lady who like other ladies so to speak), and also large a large salary for another lady in a new position that was made to promote LBBTQ type of issues which combined tending to take seemingly another million from the general fire department budget (all that according to news articles I read recently), seem to point to the issues. That doesn't mean we don't have high state taxes. I believe we have some of the highest taxes, if not the highest state taxes in the USA.

I feel bad about all that happened, but is it not our fault for not seeking Jesus Christ and listening to Him????

I am convinced that it is. He is Wisdom, which we don't seem to have. He is Understanding, which we don't seem to have. And He is knowledge, which we seem to want to hide!

Prov 2"6 For the LORD gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.

But we don't seek Him, or do you really think He, the Lord our God, is promoting sexual deviation, bad financial policies, and the stupidity that we see today? Not the One who talks to me, He doesn't! Not that He is all that concerned about how much money we have, but He is concerned about the people! That is clear from listening to Him! And He is also about wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and the truth behind what we like to hide. Spinning news stories to try and get or keep power is not going to help us in the long run, nor even in the short run. Seeking Him and listening to Him does that!

Of course the story in the OP is just silly. No other nation could seriously want California right now, though Trump might be willing to sale California if he could and get a deal.

I wonder, could we just sale off a few blue areas? Just joking - kind of.

They get my vote if they don't wish to change in California
Ha - "if they don't wish to change in California" --- California makes changes in California - I got news today, because I own a small business, that California just increased the sales tax for various cities in the state. That is to say that EVERY change in sales tax that I saw was a further increase in what is already highest of close to the highest sale tax of any state. The increases varied based upon which cities (micro-management), and they seem to vary between a quarter percent to a full percent increase and even more. For example: if you live in Arcata in Humbolt county, the sales tax went from 8.5% to 10.25%.

Still, many of the cities already had a much higher rate already like Compton in L. A. , so perhaps Arcata should celebrate the lower rate that once had but is not gone. Compton has a rate of 10.75 % which is one of the higher rates. Sadly Compton is not what you would call a city where the people are generally well off. They are largely and African American community (if African American is the best way to describe the general skin color of the community). I know, because I went to CSUDH, and graduated from their many years ago. Something doesn't seem fair, wise, and right about all this. So are people actually listen to the Lord and getting their wisdom from Him?????

When our society goes greedy, foolish, and uncaring, and instead just act like they are to get elected, then we His people are not listening to Him like we should!!!

And Denmark wants to joke about buying that. It doesn't seem like they are listening to Him either, even if of course it is a big joke.

I wonder if the state imposing differing state sales tax for different cities is even legal. If it is a state tax, it should be unifomr across the state.

Towns and cities can implement their own sales tax on a local level if they wish to.

Yeah - that is legal and probably appropriate - after all cities have expenses and so the right to collect taxes, and having it done and processed through the state is probably a good idea. Yet make not mistake, the problem is through-out the state if all the city in the state need to always raise the percentage!!!

I remember when the sales tax was under 6 % - and since we are talking a percent then inflation is taken into account. The state as a whole is all requiring almost twice what it needs compared to the past. We had schools then, in fact going to the state colleges were quite cheap. I personally could pay all my college costs, including gas, car expense, all food expense, and all entertainment expense, including auto insurance with a part time job and living at home. I paid about the same for tuition and books back then. Now going to that same college, will cost about 8 grand a year, not including food, auto, gas, entertainment, and other living costs. So our kids come out of college owing 10's of thousands of dollars in debt, when I came out owing nothing. So even that the state is actually paying for is far less, if you don't include all the silly things like some billions of dollars for a train that never got built except for a single point to being with.

The waste is enormous by the state of California, and the results are obvious, as noted by the lack of effectiveness with the fires - and crimes, and homelessness, and more. But that is not actually what I am getting at!!

What I am getting at is the reason behind it all, and that is the population not actually seeking the Lord our God, Jesus Christ, for the wisdom we need to do our jobs. What I am saying is wrapped up in the following verse:

2 Ch 1:11 God said to Solomon, “Because you had this in mind, and did not ask for riches, wealth or honor, or the life of those who hate you, nor have you even asked for long life, but you have asked for yourself wisdom and knowledge that you may rule My people over whom I have made you king,

Our rulers, and that includes people in general because we all have responsibilities, don't ask God for wisdom and knowledge to do the jobs we have, so we get what we have gotten. Rulers who want riches, wealth, honor for themselves, and the life of those they hate!

This is not hard to see!! Just look at them - our leaders!!

Now pray for our leaders!! Pray that the Lord would do a work in their lives. Pray that He might humble them, correct them, and show us how to pray for our leaders!! Then listen to what He says!

If God wants 10% and the state collects 10.75 % have they now placed themselves higher than God?

We Christians have to remember that there are many gods - and so we battle with the dark forces of this world. That battle goes on in each of us, but a failure in the battle (not looking to Jesus Christ the King of kings) will result in a second death. The signs are numerous, that point to mass destruction of those in this world (both fallen angels and fallen people). That is why it is soooo important to tells people about the Christ Jesus (God's salvation).
