What kind of Study material do you use?

What kind of Study material do you use? A Bible (in my case, the NIV) A good commentary (there are many) I believe that delving into the root meanings of words is not terribly helpful. A good modern translation is all you need to understand what the text says. It's more useful to read...

    Questions about Rosaries

It's perfectly OK to pray without a rosary at all. As has been said already, prayer is just talking to God as you would talk to your father - no ceremony required. Using a rosary won't make your prayers any more effective - if anything, it may distract your attention from Jesus. Not being a...

Open Debate Challenge on My Defending the KJV as the Perfect Word for Today in English

I'm well aware of that, but they didn't "have to" change their Bibles immediately - maybe some institutions wanted to, but that wasn't what your post said.

Open Debate Challenge on My Defending the KJV as the Perfect Word for Today in English

Really? No church I've been involved in felt the need to do so. When their Bibles needed replacing, they moved to the newer version, but not before. It's all a bit silly, really. The two NIVs are virtually identical. With so many different translations knocking around these days, people have...

Open Debate Challenge on My Defending the KJV as the Perfect Word for Today in English

It admits that the only Greek manuscripts that include the comma are very very late (14th century or later). That is really weak evidence - especially when we have so many more early Greek manuscripts available than the KJV translators had. I'm not impressed.

Open Debate Challenge on My Defending the KJV as the Perfect Word for Today in English

Actually, I do know Greek. The word in question is porneia - and it means all kinds of sexual immorality, not just fornication. And to confine the meaning in Matthew 5:32 to sex before marriage makes no sense in the context. Incidentally, in any language, meaning is determined by usage, not...

Open Debate Challenge on My Defending the KJV as the Perfect Word for Today in English

This is the kind of thing that makes me wonder whether people have actually used a modern Bible (as opposed to just comparing verses taken out of context). The Trinity? That's clearly taught in modern Bibles - but in different verses to the favourite quotes of KJV-only propagandists. Did Jesus...

Are Thankfulness and Generosity key to a Blessed Life?

True, to an extent - an attitude of thankfulness is definitely good for one's mental health. But if you're expecting some kind of quick return for your generosity (as is taught by some prosperity gospel preachers) you may be disappointed - Jesus said that we may well not get our reward until...

Warning of dangers to the doctors & some of their patients, even healers / pending judgment of God

I wrote this 7 years ago, just after finishing my treatment: https://deborahsbiblestudies.wordpress.com/2017/09/13/no-guarantees/ 7 years on, I'm still fit and well - praise God!

I expect so - it's certainly being used in the UK, and I know someone who's receiving it.

Warning of dangers to the doctors & some of their patients, even healers / pending judgment of God

I am a doctor, and I have also received various cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The heart can operate independently of the medulla as well. Radio-isotopes are a form of radiotherapy, not chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is treatment with drugs, not radiation. Sorry - it...

Warning of dangers to the doctors & some of their patients, even healers / pending judgment of God

I would say No. It's based on a lot of misinformation. 1) CPR. The normal heart rhythm is generated within the heart itself. CPR doesn't actually affect that mechanism; it stops the heart muscle cells from acting independently in an out-of-control manner, thus allowing the normal heart rate...

Miracles, healing, tongues, and the interpretation of tongues were temporary sign gifts limited to the apostolic age and have, therefore, ceased.

I am in agreement with Amadeus on this question. I have prayed in tongues, and I have witnessed a few prophecies that I would say are genuine (plus many more that probably weren't). The cessationist argument is built on two main planks: the Biblical fact that the gifts were originally given to...

Christianity Explained - Bible study course

30 Life after death Read 1 Peter 1:3-7 We can’t actually know what happens after death; but we can have confidence in the death and resurrection of Jesus. When he died for us, he drew death’s sting and removed its terror (Hebrews 2:14,15). And because he rose again, we know for certain that...

29 Jesus will return Read 1 Thessalonians 4:13-5:11 Jesus’ physical absence from this world is only temporary. He promised that he would return one day in glory and majesty to judge the world and set up his Kingdom on earth. But he also gave hints that we might have to wait a long time...

28 Telling others about Jesus Read Matthew 5:13-16 Christian faith can’t be a private matter, because Jesus Christ changes our lives in so many practical ways. We become like lights shining in a dark world - so we can’t help but show up! Whether we like it or not, we’re walking...

Christianity Explained - Bible study course

27 The Church Read Ephesians 2:11-22 God’s plan has always revolved around a special group of people - his “chosen people”. He loves each one of us individually, of course, but he wants above all to create a community: “my kingdom of priests, my holy nation” (Exodus 19:6). In Old...

26 Prayer Read Matthew 6:5-15 When we put our trust in Jesus, his Father (God) becomes our Father God as well. The mighty and awesome God actually adopts us as his children! (Romans 8:14,15) And this means that, when we pray, we can address him as ‘Father’. He is the perfect Father: always...

25 A new lifestyle Read Colossians 3:5-10 Even after becoming a Christian and receiving the Holy Spirit, I still have a natural tendency towards sin. The Spirit sets to work to ‘restore’ the image of God in me, like an art restorer working slowly and carefully on a damaged painting. But he...
