    Deconstruction Lite - (light?)

Some things on your list are matters of dispute amongst evangelical Christians - dispute that should be friendly but unfortunately often isn't. It's not un-evangelical to believe in annihilationism, for example. Many respected evangelical theologians have done so. But a lot of churches and...

Does your church still use hymnals?

We don't use a "hymnal" but we have a (relatively) modern songbook that contains a mixture of old hymns and more modern worship songs. The problem is, it's already out of date, because new songs are continually being written (and some of them are very good). So powerpoint is invaluable. But...

    The Chosen

Having seen the episode where Jesus asks Matthew to "help" Him with His sermon, it was at a time when Matthew was feeling useless because he had no practical skills like the other disciples, and believed he wasn't contributing anything to the mission. Jesus was giving him a task that he could...

    The Chosen

A dramatisation that only showed what was in the Bible would be pretty thin, and not very satisfying to watch. So yes - you should expect a lot of "unbiblical" material in a series like The Chosen (far too many scenes to list!), and if that's a problem for you, don't watch it. However, the...

    Unravelling Revelation

Revelation 22:6-21 We have now arrived at New Jerusalem, where “we will all live happily ever after.” There’s nothing more to add; we now know all that we need to know to sustain us on our journey. Some prophetic revelations were not for immediate consumption, but were recorded for future...

    Unravelling Revelation

Revelation 21:9-22:21 But the centrepiece of the new creation is the Bride! John is taken to the top of a mountain, to ‘view the land’ from afar, as Moses did (see Deuteronomy 34:1-4) — and what he sees takes his breath away. For New Jerusalem and the Church are one and the same; the city isn’t...

    Unravelling Revelation

Revelation 20:11-21:8 After the battle of Armageddon, human history will be wound up with the Last Judgement (Revelation 20:11-15). When the Judge takes His seat, His presence will be so terrifying that nothing in this creation will be able to cope with it! The universe will collapse into...

    Unravelling Revelation

Revelation 19:11-20:10 We now know (if we’ve been paying attention) that world history is an ongoing conflict between good and evil. But how and when will it end? It will end when the rightful King comes to claim His Kingdom (Revelation 19:11-21). This all-conquering King is none other than...

    Unravelling Revelation

The next section of the book is somewhat different from the preceding ones. It contrasts the destinies of two symbolic women: the “great prostitute” (Babylon) and the Bride of the Lamb (the Church). Babylon is to be found whenever and wherever the world idolises wickedness as a means to material...

    Unravelling Revelation

Now for the seven bowls - the outpouring of God's wrath. We have had glimpses of it in the sixth seal and the sixth trumpet, but now we are given a grandstand view. Revelation 15:5-16:21 Now we are shown how the end of the world will come about - not by a chance astronomical disaster or...

My KJV Debate with Jeff Dollar

I've heard this many times. It simply isn't true - as anyone who is truly familiar with the NIV will know. If the word 'fornication' has been removed it's because it's hardly used these days. The NIV is a translation into modern English, after all! Language evolves continuously, unfortunately...

My KJV Debate with Jeff Dollar

But what if all the other Christians are using the NIV? Bringing out a KJV only causes confusion. Hardly anyone in the UK uses the KJV these days - I rarely see a copy.
  14. Deborah_

Does it matter which version of the Bible you read?

This really makes me seethe. Who reads single verses? In verse 2 - the preceding sentence! - the NIV says, "every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God." Also, surely denying that He has "come in the flesh" is a swipe at His humanity - not His deity!

    Unravelling Revelation

Now for the remaining four visions... Revelation 14:1-15:4 There’s an alternative to the kingdom of the Beast - the Kingdom of God! The fourth vision (Revelation 14:1-5) is of Mount Zion, the New Jerusalem - which is where God’s people are assembled (Hebrews 12:22,23). The nation of Israel was...

    Unravelling Revelation

The second and third visions: the two beasts come onto the stage! Revelation 13 In the second vision (Revelation 13:1-10), the sea represents humanity as a whole: restless, chaotic, and unstable. Out of it, summoned by the dragon, comes a massive and terrifying Beast, like the four beasts of...

    Unravelling Revelation

I think I see the problem: we're not on the same page at all. You seem to regard the opening of the seals as literal events taking place in a particular location (heaven) at particular points in time. I see them as pictorial metaphors; it's a vision, not a documentary.
  18. Deborah_

    Unravelling Revelation

Now we come to the first of a series of 7 visions. If there is an overall theme, it seems to be the conflict between God and Satan that rumbles through the universe - and the choice that we have to make between them. Revelation 11:19-12:17 In Israel’s religious calendar, the Feast of Trumpets...

    Unravelling Revelation

Perhaps it depends on whether you link Christ's coming with the day of wrath.
  20. Deborah_

    Unravelling Revelation

Revelation 10 & 11 Between the sixth and seventh trumpets (as between the sixth and seventh seals) there are two other visions showing the same situation from the point of view of God's people. Disasters and calamities are a rather crude means of communication; but God also speaks verbally...
