Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. 17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. 18 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. 19 Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?

1322 διδαχή didachḗ; gen. didachḗs, fem. noun from didáskō (G1321), to teach. In an act. sense it means the act of teaching, instructing, tutoring (Mark 4:2; 12:38; 1 Cor. 14:6, 26; 2 Tim. 4:2); in a pass. sense, teaching which is given, that which anyone teaches, the manner or character of one's teaching (Matt. 7:28; 22:33; Mark 1:22, 27; 11:18; Luke 4:32). In an absolute sense, it denotes the teaching of Jesus (2 John 1:9, 10); the Lord (Mark 11:18; John 18:19; Acts 13:12); the Apostles (Acts 2:42; 5:28; Titus 1:9); the things taught, precept, doctrine (Matt. 16:12; John 7:16, 17; Acts 17:19; Rom. 6:17; 16:17; Heb. 6:2; 13:9). Other doctrines: of Balaam, magic, gnosticism (Rev. 2:14 [cf. 2 Pet. 2:15; Jude 1:11]); of the Nicolaitans, similar to that of Balaam (Rev. 2:15 [cf. Rev. 2:6]); of Jezebel, adultery, idolatry (Rev. 2:24). Essentially didachḗ is the same as didaskalía (G1319), sometimes meaning the manner of teaching and sometimes the content of teaching. Both are used in the act. and pass. senses, i.e., the act of teaching and the content of what is taught. However, it is to be noted that the pass. sense is predominant in didachḗ and the act. sense in didaskalía. In didachḗ, we have incorporated the authority of that which is taught, and didaskalía predominates in the act or art of teaching. Didachḗ is used only twice in the Pastoral Epistles (2 Tim. 4:2; Titus 1:9) while didaskalía, with a stress on the art of teaching, occurs fifteen times.

Now that we have heard from Christ on the matter, and defined our terms.
I will answer your question.

The best way to know the will of God is to do the will of God, as Christ Our Lord clearly stated.

Solomon had somewhat to say on this topic as well

"All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits. 3 Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established."

There are quite a few Reformers on my bookshelf, yes. Right beside the early Church Fathers, Puritans, Eastern Mystics, Hebrew and Greek Scholars, a wide variety of biblical manuscripts, translations and commentaries.

And none of these would be of any use to me whatsoever, were I not a child of God, washed in the Blood of Christ, and born of His Spirit.

But even then, once born of His Spirit, and with all of these invaluable resources at my disposal, unless I am daily endeavouring to walk in that same Holy Spirit, in willful obedience to the revelation which I have received, in humble faith and genuine repentance, these resources have little, if any value.
And this, is my doctrine.

----------------------------------------------------------------
A few pertinent quotations

"If we are going to be imbalanced, better that we be doctrinally weak and have a vital prayer life and a real sense of God on the heart than we get all our doctrine straight and be cold and spiritually hard."

Timothy J. Keller

"Christianity is distinguished by the remarkable characteristic that it is the only world religion which begins by discarding its own founders creed."

Anthony Buzzard

"Doctrines are meant to serve man, not the other way around."

Amin Maalouf

"He that has doctrinal knowledge and speculation only, without affection, never is engaged in the business of religion."

Jonathan Edwards
Thanks for the sermon @Simonides.

God's sovereignty isn't easy to understand. He foreknew what Lucifer would do before He created him. The Lord also foreknew what Adam & Eve would do before He created them and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. AND He already had a plan and solution...the Lamb was slain from the foundation of the world.
The price of free will, it goes in any direction.

Who am I to say?

Isa 6:5 Then I said, "Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts." 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal in his hand, which he had taken from the altar with tongs. 7 He touched my mouth with it and said, "Behold, this has touched your lips; and your iniquity is taken away and your sin is forgiven."

I AM... convinced your Pastor would not agree with Isa 6:5-7... Would you not agree... I can tell from your post!

How do you not know these things?
We are the ones who want death, that is the ultimate extension of our uncleanliness. God doesn't want death. It is us who superimpose our requirement for death onto God.

How do I know these things? I look at Jesus and listen to him....just as the voice on the mountain instructed.
I see the glory of the Father in the face of Jesus and there is no death. There is only Grace and affection and kindness and forgiveness.

Hebrews 1:3
'.....The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being,....'

Colossians 2:9
For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form

Suffering is the true test of obedience. When your obedience brings suffering, and you continue to obey, even though that suffering gets worse and worse.

Much love!
Amen marks! And Peter says much the same

1 Peter 2:20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently?
but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.

1 Peter 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

1 Peter 4:15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.

1 Peter 4:16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

We are going to suffer in this life one way or another, whether its for good or for evil, there is just no glory in suffering for evil, or even being buffeted for our faults and taking it patiently.

There is suffering according to the will of God

1 Peter 4:19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

And a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory which come through suffering for good

2 Cr 4:17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory

Jesus Christ came into the world, a world He had co-created with His Father. But, the world did not recognize Him. Instead, He was deemed to be worthy of death. Why did Jesus allow Himself to be treated in this way?

Striving to apprehend that for which I have been apprehended by Christ Jesus.

So your saying this is why Christ had to die? The topic of this thread?

I'm saying Jesus came so that we could see the character of God firsthand. His character had been misrepresented and obscured by Satan from the outset. His character (holiness) was such an affront to us that we killed him.

One issue there. Jesus himself did not teach a grace gospel.
Well...Roman Christianity teaches a grace gospel. One of the most often quoted verses to try and do away with God’s Royal law comes from the writing of the Apostle Paul; (Rom. 6:14) For sin shall not have dominion over you: for you are not under the law, but under grace.
Now people will take this one verse and run with it, ignoring the writings of the others apostles and the prophets and the statements of even Jesus himself. Grace is nothing more than a free gift. And that free gift is our access back to the tree of life (Jesus) which Adam caused us to lose by disobeying God. Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (Romans 5: 12) But to maintain your grace you must keep the law. (1John 3:4) Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. Now we have just read the biblical definition of sin, the transgression (breaking) of the law (commandments.) It doesn’t matter what you or I think sin is, it’s what God says sin is that counts.

True.
And I'm not a Roman Christian.

How many Christians have you met though that insist the law, commandments, are done away?

Sorry.... I Am still confused... ??? So... Your saying scripture was written so that Jesus came... so that we could see the character of God firsthand... I totally agree with you...

Yet... how can Satan misrepresent Jesus' character... out side of scripture? This is where... I'm not getting your point???

G'day Pierac,
Would you consider that God doesn't need death to satisfy anything. Death is as foreign to God as light is from darkness. Why on earth would God want death?
God is far far above the pitiful rational of fallen man who glorify death as 'sacred'; as if God requires payment.
Really... Silly child... how do you not know these things.... grab your ankles little boy...

"Behold, I send an angel before thee, to keep thee by the way ... Take ye heed of him, and hearken unto his voice; provoke him not (be not rebellious against him): for he will not pardon your transgression; (SINS) for my name is in him" "But if you truly obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. "For My angel will go before you… (Exodus 23:20-23).

Now... answer your own question.... You little Child has you have no idea how Sins are forgiven...

Isa 6:6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal in his hand, which he had taken from the altar with tongs. 7 He touched my mouth with it and said, "Behold, this has touched your lips; and your iniquity is taken away and your sin is forgiven."

OMG.... Sin is actually forgiven with out the blood of Jesus!!!... You getting the picture yet... Silly Child!!!!

Ohhh. Satan misrepresents God character through and by the religious systems of the World be it 'Christian' or otherwise.

Here is an example of a misrepresentation; God had his Son killed because he required blood to forgive.
Here is another; the Roman system of pomp and ceremony and wealth and self glorification is in direct contrast to the Nazarene who 'had not a place to lay his head'
