Matthew 3:1-4:11
Matthew 3:1-4:11 Devotional today

3:15
Jesus replied, "Let it be so for now; it is proper for us to fulfill all righteousness."

This say's to me that, water baptism is "righteous" and is done "unto repentance". When we choose to become followers of Christ...NOT just "believers" but, genuine "followers" then, that is when His Spirit fills us, as we submit to Him.

And, of course, 16 is my favorite "Trinity" verse :)

His Temptation! Yikes...would our own faith hold up to this kind of thing? I'd probably fall at the food! GOD FORBID!!! Then you all can call me Esau

Glad you posted. Im in quite a few Bible lessons lately. Hungry for the Word much? ^_^ Esau's appetite. LOL. This is what I had blogged.

Day # 3

Read: Matthew 3:1-4:11

Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’ ” Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

Matthew 4:10‭-‬11 NIV

Jesus not only could quote scripture, He understood it well enough to be able to not be deceived by Satan's tricks. He also fasted forty days. In the chapter before, He followed the will of the Father, setting the example of water baptism by John the Baptist. He was prepared to face the devil and his attacks.

To be like Jesus and withstand the enemy, it is important to pray continually and fast if possible. It is important to practice living the Word. Not just hearing, but doing it. But most important, it is knowing the Word, not just in quotation marks. Because satan tried to use scripture against Jesus, and He was able to see through his lies.

Yep, funny how Satan could also quote scripture but, to his own demise, ha!

Just finished the list. Good to be able to share it,discuss it with others now. Here is Day #4

Read: John 2:1-11; 4:1-42

This act in Cana of Galilee was the first sign Jesus gave, the first glimpse of his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

John 2:11 MSG

Jesus answered, “If you knew the generosity of God and who I am, you would be asking me for a drink, and I would give you fresh, living water.”

John 4:10 MSG

--------

This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

John 2:11 NASB

Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

John 4:10 NASB1995

Wow, that reads pretty different. I picked the scriptures out from the passages that I believe helps me to focus on Jesus and His gift to us. These passages are about Jesus first miracle, turning water into wine, and the samaritan woman at the well.

I like how the Message names the gift of generosity. It was out of Jesus' generosity, (and honoring momma), that He performed His first miracle in turning water into wine.

It is out of God's abundant generosity that living water is offered to any who believe and accept this gift. That is such cause of excitement. Id be telling everyone too. Oh wait...yep. Im sure I do. :) I even forget my waterpot on occasion. ^_^

Day #5: Read: Luke 4:14-30

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Luke 4:14-30 NIV

________

It is encouraging to me that Christ was born to do these things for us. I cannot imagine telling my friends and family I grew up with, "by the way, I am the Word of God you study about." And Jesus was driven out of His hometown... He did so much more for us even before the cross. He was rejected and cast out. And yet...He passed every test and still went to the cross for me. I am deeply humbled by that. Now we are able to proclaim freedom from prisoners and everything else as well, because of His abounding grace towards us.

Just to know that He IS the WORD of God and had such knowledge and spoke with such authority blows my mind that so many of His own rejected Him. But, He knew they would. He had such vast knowledge and, all of it lined up with the OT also. So difficult to understand how the Jews rejected Him.
This passage also shows that Christ IS God, amen.

Read: John 1:31-51; Luke 5:1-11; Matthew 9:9-13; Mark 3:13-19

Two translations:

"Jesus, overhearing, shot back, “Who needs a doctor: the healthy or the sick? Go figure out what this Scripture means: ‘I’m after mercy, not religion.’ I’m here to invite outsiders, not coddle insiders.”

Matthew 9:12‭-‬13 MSG

"But when Jesus heard this, He said, “ It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire compassion , and not sacrifice ,’ for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Matthew 9:12-13 NASB199

Thoughts: The Chosen series gives a really neat depiction of the disciples. People like us. Go figure… But it is true, God's mercy is such an amazing attribute. As many times as mankind has fallen and rejected God...got things wrong, etc. He has still been here through it all. We are completely loved and forgiven, because of the blood of Christ Jesus. This is His mercy. He has called us willingly. And just wants us to follow Him in return... Be fishers of men.

Day#7

Read: Luke 6:17-49

“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Luke 6:46‭-‬49 NASB1995

Thoughts:The beatitudes are very close to my heart, and I believe verses 46 through 49 sums up how we should trust these promises of God's Word along with the promises of everything the Bible teaches. We need to hear and understand His Word, renew our minds in His Word, and be transformed by His Word. Because God is the Word.

Realized I missed yesterday. Church is a busy day of rest. Lol. Im mainly posting from my blog and rereading the scriptures again.

Read: Matthew 8:1-13; Luke 7:11-17; 7:36-50
13156_105484142ed38d0480e9f1e82dc7b41d.jpg

Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet. You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume. For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little.”

Thoughts: what I gleaned this time is how Jesus only had to speak or lay hands on somebody and people were healed. One raised from the dead even! He told the centurion man to let his servant be healed according to his faith. Is our trust in God the healer? In what way? Jesus also forgave our sins like this woman. Thst takes faith as well. I am grateful to Christ my Savior.

Day #9

Read Matthew 12:1-13; 22-45

Jesus, knowing they were out to get him, moved on. A lot of people followed him, and he healed them all. He also cautioned them to keep it quiet, following guidelines set down by Isaiah: Look well at my handpicked servant; I love him so much, take such delight in him. I’ve placed my Spirit on him; he’ll decree justice to the nations. But he won’t yell, won’t raise his voice; there’ll be no commotion in the streets. He won’t walk over anyone’s feelings, won’t push you into a corner. Before you know it, his justice will triumph; the mere sound of his name will signal hope, even among far-off unbelievers.

Matthew 12:15‭-‬21 MSG

-so this has nothing to do with politics, but a simple "wwjd answer" to what is going on in this day and age is right here. There is so much yelling and hurt on both sides, nobody hears each other. Jesus is our example. Wow. I like NASB, but the Message feels like when I was a child and fell in love with this Children's Bible. It is opening my eyes to Revelation I didn't see before. Just didn't have an open mind to try it. Raises in a "KJV only" atmosphere. Then in a college ministry, switched to "NASB" only. Why this stuck out to me also:

“There is far more at stake here than religion. If you had any idea what this Scripture meant—‘I prefer a flexible heart to an inflexible ritual’—you wouldn’t be nitpicking like this. The Son of Man is no lackey to the Sabbath; he’s in charge.”

Matthew 12:6‭-‬8 MSG

The pharisees were so concerned for the law, they lacked compassion. They didn't understand the true message of God's Word. I don't want to be a pharisee, I just want to be a sheep and follow Jesus. Baa baa baa! :)

Hi Mayflower,

I apologize if a Catholic perspective is not welcome here, but 'mercy not sacrifice' And 'mercy not religion' have entirely different meanings to me... word usage can be key to proper communication of ideas and also the cause (avoidance!) of miscommunications...

I will gladly give my perspectives in this discussion if I have your permission.. :D

Peace be with you!

Yes. Thinking of ourselves as somehow better or above our brothers and sisters... those carnal ones... those sinners... can be a deadly trap!

Stick to grazing and listen to His voice!

Peace!

I would love to hear your perspective!!! I have been warned about the Message, and some of its miscommunications. So Ive been more careful in cross referencing this time with word for word translstions. If there is someone to study with, I wouldn't mind doing it again. I learn a lot through discussion and love the Word of God. :)

I was just raised in KJV and never gave other translations besides NASB a chance

HI Mayflower,

What then does it mean 'i desire mercy and not sacrifice'. Did the Lord not demand sacrifice from Israel?

It is all about the heart...

To think of God as some angry power that needs to be appeased by rivers of blood, or saying the right formula of words, or performing some specific ritual so that His wrath can be assuaged and then we can go off and live our lives however we please is an entirely wrong view of our Father...

It is a conversion of heart that He desires... a humble and contrite heart He will not despise..

Psalm 51 addresses this when David says 'place in me a clean heart o Lord' 'then I will offer acceptable sacrifices'

How then does this apply to the Christian sacrifice, how do we fulfill Malachi 1:11?

The Didache puts it this way: (bolding by me)

1. On the Lord's Day of the Lord come together, break bread and hold Eucharist, after confessing your transgressions that your offering may be pure;
2. But let none who has a quarrel with his fellow join in your meeting until they be reconciled, that your sacrifice be not defiled.
3. For this is that which was spoken by the Lord, "In every place and time offer me a pure sacrifice, for I am a great king," saith the Lord, "and my name is wonderful among the heathen."

Peace be with you!

Thank you for your input. I agree.

Didache Ill have to look up. I have heard the term "didactic books". (I get caught up on terms, but wonderful point , of a humble and contrite heart being sacrifice and how to reconcile so that that heart is not defiled
